El turismo de cementerios, también conocido como necroturismo o turismo cenizo, es una forma de viajar que cada vez tiene más seguidores. Aunque de entrada puede parecer una costumbre algo macabra, lo cierto es que los camposantos son, en muchas ocasiones, bellos lugares donde no sólo descansan grandes personajes ilustres de la historia, sino que además cuentan con obras y mausoleos que son auténticas obras de arte y que vale la pena visitar.

Cementerio de Grange (Edimburgo)

Situado en el barrio de Grange, al sur de la capital de Escocia, nos encontramos este cementerio victoriano diseñado en 1847 por el arquitecto David Bryce.

Entre sus curiosidades se encuentra una lápida de inspiración egipcia, con palmera incluida, que el escultor Robert Thompson diseñó a modo de “portal egipcio” al mundo de los muertos para la esposa de William Stuart, que falleció en 1868.

Catacumbas, cruces celtas y monumentos a personalidades de la época como el pionero de la fotografía Robert Henry Bow, Jessie Gellatly –una de las primeras mujeres médico del Reino Unido– o el artista Robert Herdman, hacen de este cementerio un lugar que debes visitar.

Located near Grange, south of the capital of Scotland, we can find this Victorian cemetery designed in 1847 by the architect David Bryce.

Among its attractions there is a tombstone of Egyptian inspiration, including a palm tree, which the sculptor Robert Thompson designed as an "Egyptian portal" to the world of the dead for the wife of William Stuart, who died in 1868.

This cemetery is a place you must visit, with catacombs, Celtic crosses and monuments to personalities of the time such as the pioneer of photography Robert Henry Bow, Jessie Gellatly -one of the first female doctors in the United Kingdom- or the artist Robert Herdman.

Cementerio de Père Lachaise (París)

El cementerio intramuros más grande de París y uno de los más famosos del mundo, cuenta con 44 hectáreas donde están enterrados personajes tan famosos como el escritor Oscar Wilde, cuya lápida se llena de besos, el compositor Frederic Chopin o el pintor Modigliani. Más allá de sus ilustres habitantes, visitar este cementerio, que abrió sus puertas en 1804, permite admirar una gran variedad de estilos en los monumentos funerarios que lo componen: tumba gótica, panteón haussmaniano, etc. La belleza de algunas de sus tumbas, con sus obras escultóricas, lápidas y tumbas es tal, que muchas de ellas deberían exponerse en un museo. Si a eso se le suma la tranquilidad y sus espacios verdes, el Père Lachaise es un lugar que no debe faltar en una ruta para aficionados al necroturismo.

Situado en una colina e inaugurado en 1851, este cementerio italiano, que es un auténtico museo al aire libre, llama la atención también por sus jardines, entre los que existe incluso un calco del Panteón de Agripa.

Desde su creación, ha sido objeto de visita por parte de personajes famosos de todo el mundo, incluyendo al filósofo Friedrich Nietzsche o el escritor Ernest Hemingway, quien afirmó que el Cementerio Monumental de Staglieno era “una de las maravillas del mundo”.

Many consider it to be the most beautiful cemetery in the world for its sculptures and artistic works, the Staglieno cemetery in Genoa is also one of the largest in Europe. Cementerio de San Pedro (Salzburgo)

En pleno centro de la ciudad austriaca, nos encontramos con este cementerio en el que se grabaron algunas de las escenas de la famosa película “Sonrisas y Lágrimas”. El Cementerio de San Pedro data de la época de los romanos, específicamente del año 480 y su parte más antigua corresponde a las catacumbas, tumbas excavadas en la roca, posterior lugar de recogimiento para los monjes de la Abadía de San Pedro.

La Cripta Comunal, que se construyó en 1659 y que es un lugar en el que se colocaban los cuerpos que no podían ser ubicados en otro sitio o la capilla Gertraude, son algunos de los lugares que se pueden visitar en este famoso camposanto.

Este cementerio cuenta también con importantes personajes que allí descansan: Haydn, algunos familiares de Mozart o el famoso arquitecto Solari son algunos de sus figuras más ilustres.Ya sea por sus obras arquitectónicas, los mausoleos familiares con muchas décadas de historia o por las propias tumbas de los monjes, que fueron los primeros en ser enterrados en este cementerio, lo cierto es que merece la pena recorrer este lugar.

Cementerio de Ohlsdorf (Hamburgo)

Albergando todas las religiones, el de Ohlsdorf es el cementerio rural más grande del mundo. Abierto en 1877, es además el espacio verde más grande de la ciudad alemana de Hamburgo y gracias a sus más de 450 especies vegetales, tiene un gran valor botánico. A eso hay que sumarle un estanque con cisnes y múltiples esculturas y obras de arte.

12 capillas y una red de calles internas que recorre aproximadamente 17 kilómetros forman parte de este camposanto que cuenta con seis memoriales en recuerdo a las víctimas del Holocausto. Dentro de los más importantes, se encuentra el Memorial de las Víctimas de la Persecución Nazi, que data de 1949 y contiene los nombres grabados de los 25 campos de concentración, el Memorial de las Víctimas del Incendio de Hamburgo, cuyos restos descansan en una fosa común y el memorial en honor a los Luchadores de la Resistencia de Hamburgo entre 1933 y 1945.

The Ohlsdorf cemetery is home to all religions and is the largest rural cemetery in the world. Opened in 1877, it is also the largest green space in the German city of Hamburg and thanks to its more than 450 plant species, it has a great botanical value. 12 chapels and a network of internal streets that runs approximately 17 kilometers are part of this cemetery that has six memorials in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. Cementerio de Santa Mariña de Dozo (Cambados)

Considerado por muchos como “el cementerio más melancólico del mundo”, el Cementerio Santa Mariña de Dozo se sitúa junto a las ruinas de la antigua iglesia parroquial de Santa Mariña, patrona de Cambados, en la provincia de Pontevedra. Debido a los espectaculares arcos desnudos que sustentaban la iglesia, que sobresalen en forma de armazón, es uno de los lugares más bellos para visitar y realizar fotografías.

Debido a su valor artístico e histórico, ha sido declarado Bien de Interés Cultural y nombrado tercer monumento funerario más importante de España, formando desde hace casi diez años parte de la Asociación de Cementerios Singulares de Europa.

Many people consider it "the most melancholic cemetery in the world", the Santa Mariña de Dozo Cemetery is located next to the ruins of the old parish church of Santa Mariña, patron saint of Cambados, in the province of Pontevedra.
