El no tener que sacar constantemente el terminal móvil del bolsillo es un ejemplo de lo que decimos. Pero hay personas que pueden incluso darle un uso mucho mayor a estos accesorios de lo que piensan muchos. Nos referimos a los invidentes, que con un modelo perfectamente adaptado pueden conocer informaciones de forma rápida y personalizada.
Esto es justo lo que ha pensado un conjunto de desarrolladores para lanzar Dot Watch, un reloj inteligente con amplias funcionalidades y que utiliza Braille para notificar la información que aparece en su pantalla. De esta forma, los invidentes que lo utilizan pueden saber de una forma rápida y precisa lo que se muestra en pantalla.
I recently had the opportunity to review the Dot Watch, the world’s first Braille smartwatch for people who are blind. Made by Dot Incorporation, a startup company in South Korea, the Dot Watch allows iPhone and Android smartphone users to receive and view notifications on the watch in Braille.
The Dot Watch consists of a simple design. On the face of the watch is a Braille display which has four cells, and below that are two touch sensors that allow users to scroll through and read each notification. The right side of the watch has three controls: the “Select” button, the “Dot Crown” dial and the “Home” button. These controls are used to operate the watch’s different functions. The watch is charged via a USB charger which is included with the device.

El reloj está conectado a tu smartphone. Cuando alguien te llama, el reloj vibra y te indica quién es, sin tener que sacar tu móvil del bolsillo. Cada mensaje que se recibe en el teléfono también se muestra en el reloj en forma de braille. Puedes leer de forma rápida y cómoda con los controles tácticos intuitivos, que se pueden ajustar al gusto.
Las notificaciones de las apps que tienes en el móvil se trasladan al reloj. Puedes sincronizarlos con tu calendario o la app del tiempo, para saber si vas a tener que coger el paraguas de camino a la reunión de esta tarde.
The Dot Watch works by pairing it with a smartphone via Bluetooth. Users must first install the Dot Watch app, available in the iTunes and Google Play app stores. Next, they have to create an account by registering their email, name and creating a password. The watch can then be paired with the smartphone. Once paired, users can begin receiving notifications from their phone, tell the time and date, and use other features.
Once the watch is set up, it alerts users when they have received a new notification on their phone, such as a text message. They can then read it on the watch’s Braille display. The watch also alerts individuals when they get a call, and they can check caller information and answer or decline the call
Muy interesante… pero no sé braille
¡No te preocupes! Que el reloj sea inclusivo con las personas con discapacidad visual no excluye a las personas que pueden ver y que, en principio, no saben braille. El dispositivo cuenta con una opción táctil que funciona sin braille.
Una de las funciones más características es la posibilidad de aprender braille. Y es que el reloj tiene integrado un programa de aprendizaje para aquellos a los que les interese profundizar en esta herramienta de comunicación.
El diseño del Dot Watch ha ganado premios internacionales e incluso se ha expuesto en museos. La forma redonda y minimalista de la pulsera milanesapega con cualquier situación o vestimenta. El reloj pesa solo 60 gramos y está hecho de aluminio ligero.
Great, but I don’t know braille
From the app, individuals can configure the watch’s settings, check the battery status, set an alarm and use the “learn Braille” function, a feature which allows users to send a message to the watch in Braille. Aside from having a minor issue with pairing the watch to my phone (problem which was quickly resolved by technical support), the set up process and app were completely accessible on my iPhone, and I was able to do it without sighted assistance.
