Vamos a ello.

There are very few items of clothing as treacherous as a pair of jeans. You can find the perfect jacket at a flea market and the comfiest trainers in two clicks, but nailing those jeans that fit you like a glove and actually make you feel cool… well, that's a whole different story. That's why here at Wallpaper we've rolled up our sleeves and scoured half the planet to put this guide together.

This isn't just about the classics (though they're here too), but also the brands that are shaking things up: from Japanese artisans who treat indigo like pure gold, to innovators who recycle, weave with silk, or manage to make a pair of jeans softer than your favourite hoodie. Let's dive in.

The OGs (for all the right reasons)

Levi's

Let's start with the granddaddy of them all. Because when you think of jeans, the first thing that pops into your head is that copper rivet and the red tab. Levi Strauss, a Bavarian immigrant with more vision than anyone, basically invented the wheel right in the middle of the 1853 gold rush. And they haven't stopped since. The best part? They don't just rest on their laurels: their collaborations with Kiko Kostadinov or Junya Watanabe prove that the 501 is still a blank canvas for creativity. If you don't know where to start, any pair of their original 501s is a safe bet.

Wrangler

Wrangler

If Levi's is the king of the city, Wrangler is the one that smells like grass and leather. They were born for real cowboys, the ones who spend hours on horseback, and you can tell from the details: flat rivets that don't scratch the saddle, seams that don't chafe, and seven belt loops instead of five. But don't sleep on them, because nowadays you see them just as much in the middle of Madrid as on the ranch. Their 2026 Super Wrangler line is amazing, with wider silhouettes and that "W" topstitching that screams "I'm a classic, but I'm back in a big way."

Carhartt WIP

Carhartt WIP

This one's all about toughness. The Work In Progress division took Detroit's workwear (from 1889, no less) and turned it into the ultimate urban uniform. Their double-knee jeans are so sturdy they feel bulletproof, and yet they have that streetwise flow that makes you want to get them covered in paint or mud just so they look even more authentic. Plus, they're the kings of detail: tool pockets, hammer loops… and their collabs with A.P.C. and Nike sell out in minutes.

Cuando el lujo se pone vaqueros

Calvin Klein

When denim gets dressed up

Calvin Klein

There's a before and after Calvin Klein when it comes to denim. He was the first to make you feel like a pair of jeans could be just as sexy as an evening gown. That 80s campaign with Brooke Shields ("nothing comes between me and my Calvins") changed the game forever. Today, the brand is still going strong with denim, and if you're into that 90s vibe, their '90s Straight Jeans' are exactly what you need: straight, no frills, and with that pedigree that only comes with decades of history.

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren

You know that picture of Ralph Lauren always wearing jeans? It's not just for show. The guy breathes denim. And he's elevated it to almost mythical status in his RRL line, where 19th-century workwear turns into museum-worthy pieces. We're obsessed with their patchwork jackets and those pieces that look like they've been pulled from an abandoned barn, but with a refinement that only an American genius can pull off.

The Row

The Row

If you're all about quiet perfection, The Row is your religion. The Olsen sisters don't make a lot of noise, but when they touch something, they turn it to gold. Their denim, made between Italy and Japan, is so soft it feels like you've worn it a hundred times already. The 'Eglitta' cut for her and the 'Ross' for him are pure relaxed elegance – the kind of jeans you throw on with a basic tee and suddenly look like the most sophisticated person in the room.

Okay, this is where we level up. Loro Piana has done the unthinkable: mixed denim with silk. And not just a little, but 41% silk. The result is a fabric that costs an arm and a leg (literally, over £1,000 a pair), but feels like a whisper. And if that's not enough, they have CashDenim, which is a cashmere blend. This is the jean for someone who already owns every other pair and just wants the absolute best.

A.P.C.

The European touch (cool, effortless, and full of style)

A.P.C.

The French have a gift for making the simple look extraordinary. A.P.C. is living proof. Their Japanese selvedge denim is stiff at first, but it moulds to you over time, like the jeans are making a pact with you. No gimmicks, no excess: straight cuts, just the right rise, that perfect shade of blue. And heads up, their denim jackets with side pockets are the object of desire for half the Wallpaperteam.

Acne Studios

Acne Studios

The Swedes always have to be different. Acne started with 100 pairs of raw denim with red stitching, and they've been experimenting ever since. Now they're all about super baggy cuts with trompe-l'oeil effects, laboratory-grade washes, and rips everywhere. The '1991' and '2022' models are our weaknesses: adjustable waistbands, extra-long lengths, and that attitude of "I got dressed without looking in the mirror and I look amazing."

Frame

Frame

The love child of Los Angeles and London. Frame has that certain je ne sais quoi from the West Coast but with the spark of Shoreditch. They're famous for their 2000s skinnies (the 'Alix' lengthens your legs like nobody's business), but their new wide silhouettes and flares are stealing the spotlight. Frame's denim hugs without squeezing, and their campaigns with Sienna Miller already tell you it's all about good vibes and chilling.

Jeanerica

Jeanerica

Another Swedish brand, but with a very personal approach. It comes from the old school of Acne (its founders used to work there), and it shows. They nail the perfect balance between American cuts and European eyes. The 'Idaho' is a 90s low-rise that fits like a dream, and the 'Milan' is that 70s flare that's practically begging for platform shoes. Plus, their Atelier series with outside collaborators always throws up some interesting surprises.

Japón, el templo del índigo

Junya Watanabe

Japan, the indigo temple

Junya Watanabe

If there's a wizard of patchwork, it's Junya Watanabe. The Japanese designer doesn't do things by halves: for his 2025 collection, he used 50 different types of denim from Okayama (the mecca of jeans) and painstakingly took them apart and stitched them back together by hand. The result is a crazy mix of volumes and textures that looks like it came from the future, but using ancient techniques. His collaborations with Levi's are the Holy Grail for collectors.

Kapital

Kapital

Now we're entering cult territory. Kapital isn't a fashion brand; it's a philosophy. They make jeans the way they used to, but then cover them in smiley faces, embroidered cherry blossoms, and hand-stitched boro patches. Their famous 'Century Denim' is dyed with unripe persimmon juice to give it that impossible orange-brown hue. Every pair is unique, and every pair tells a story. If you're serious about denim, you have to look towards Kojima.

Sostenibilidad y segunda vida (con mucho estilo)

Re/Done

Sustainability and second lives (with serious style)

Re/Done

The premise is brilliant: why bust your ass trying to break in new jeans when the old ones were better? Re/Done rescues vintage Levi's (those pre-2000s cuts) and gives them a new life. They come with that natural wear that's so hard to achieve, and their collaboration with stylist Mel Ottenberg is any denim-head's dream. Comfortable, authentic, and full of history.

ELV Denim

ELV Denim

From East London, Anna Foster has built a brand that's all about stylish recycling. Her trick? Taking two second-hand jeans in different shades and joining them down the centre seam to create a two-tone patchwork effect. Their 'Freya' cut, low-rise and baggy, is a total winner. These are pieces with a soul and zero guilt.

DL1961

DL1961

If you care about the environment but don't want to compromise on quality, DL1961 is your spot. They manufacture in Pakistan using solar energy and use less than 10 gallons of water per pair, compared to the industry standard of 1,500. And their new DL Aura fabric, a cotton and Tencel blend, is so soft it feels like you've worn them for years. Sustainable innovation without losing an ounce of style.

And two hidden gems worth your time

Jacob Cohën

The best Italian denim, full stop. They take the most exclusive Japanese fabric, put it through 45 wash processes, and add jewel-studded buttons and patches that look like tiny works of art. Since Jennifer Bardelle took over, they've pivoted towards sustainability and even launched a fully compostable pair of jeans. Luxury, craftsmanship, and conscience all in one pair.

Superstitch

Superstitch

And finally, the denim obsessive's dream. Arthur Leclerq, its founder, has rescued looms from closed-down factories and travelled to Japan to learn from master weavers. His jeans are like the old ones: resistant to sun, grime, and the passage of time, with the magic of moulding to your body until they're yours and yours alone. It's denim in its purest form, no compromises.

So there you have it, whether you're a fan of flawless classics, weird Japanese oddities, or quiet luxury, there's a pair of jeans out there waiting for you. And remember: a good pair of denim isn't bought – it's adopted. Over time, it becomes a part of you.
