Es difícil de imaginar, pero hubo un tiempo, mucho antes de que a algún cerebrito del marketing se le ocurriera la palabra "aftershave" y antes de que las fragancias se etiquetaran "pour homme" y "pour femme", en el que los perfumes no tenían género.
En la era victoriana, los hombres no tenían ningún problema en usar fragancias abiertamente florales, y los tradicionales productos que aún se venden en algunas barberías, perfumados con rosas y lavanda, son la prueba de una época en la que los hombres se dejaban llevar por su olfato y no por los argumentos del marketing.
Veámoslo de este modo: si te limitas a usar sólo fragancias destinadas a los hombres, estás estrechando el campo y cerrando la puerta a algunas fragancias muy interesantes.
Claro que hay que tener agallas para llevar algunas de las fragancias que se enumeran a continuación, pero si eres una persona segura de sí misma, a la que le gusta pensar de forma independiente y se siente cómoda en su propia piel, no tendrás ningún problema. Estas fragancias femeninas huelen muy bien en nosotros los hombre.
¿Por qué no probar uno o dos?
It’s hard to imagine, but there was a time, way before some marketing whiz-kid came up with the word aftershave and before fragrances were labelled ‘pour homme’ and ‘pour femme’, where scents were essentially genderless.
Certainly, in Victorian times men wouldn’t have had a problem with wearing overtly floral fragrances and the old-fashioned products still sold in some traditional barbers, scented as they are with rose and lavender, are evidence of a time when men were led by their noses rather than by marketing spiel.
Think of it this way: if you restrict yourself to only wearing fragrances earmarked as being for men then you’re limiting the field and closing the door on some very interesting fragrances indeed. Sure, it takes guts to carry off some of the scents listed below but if you’re a confident character who likes to think for himself and is comfortable in his own skin, you’ll have no problem at all.
So why not give one or two of them a whirl?
BURBERRY FOR WOMEN EAU DE PARFUM

GUERLAIN JICKY
Con fama de ser la fragancia favorita de Sean Connery (y no hay nada más macho que Bond), este legendario perfume, lanzado en 1889, se considera la primera fragancia importante de la era moderna.
Empezó siendo popular entre los hombres, luego se hizo popular entre las mujeres y finalmente se estableció como una fragancia femenina de buena fe. Reputed to be a favourite fragrance of Sean Connery (and they don’t come much butcher than Bond) this legendary perfume, launched back in 1889, is credited with being the first significant fragrance of the modern age.
It started out popular with men, then became popular with women, eventually establishing itself as a bona fide women’s fragrance. A member of perfume site basenotes.com describes it as “flowery, animalistic… like a cat having a poop in a lavender bush.” Which is quite possibly one of my favorite fragrance reviews ever.
REISS FLOR GRIS
Lanzada el año pasado como parte de un dúo (una fragancia para hombre y otra para mujer), la propuesta femenina de Reiss, Grey Flower, resultó ser una mezcla rica, cálida y sorprendentemente oscura de incienso, pachulí, ámbar y madera de secuoya.
Grande y contundente, no es en absoluto lo que cabría esperar de un perfume de mujer de la calle, y queda igual de bien en el armario de tu cuarto de baño que en el tocador de la mujer.
Launched last year as part of a duo (one fragrance for men and one for women), Reiss‘ women’s offering, Grey Flower, turned out to be a rich, warm and surprisingly dark blend of frankincense, patchouli, amber and sequoia wood.
Big and punchy, it’s definitely not what you’d expect from a high street women’s perfume, sitting equally as well in your bathroom cabinet as it does in her boudoir.
LUST BY GORILLA
Basado en el jazmín -un ingrediente muy utilizado en las fragancias femeninas y considerado afrodisíaco-, este perfume de nombre tan apropiado tiene un toque crudo y sexual con el que un hombre seguro de sí mismo puede salirse fácilmente con la suya.
"Por su exageración, evoca ideas de noches calurosas de verano y calor pegajoso", dice Moore. "El olor es intenso, lleno de bravuconería, carnal, con notas crudas de jazmín y miel, y definitivamente no es un perfume de flores marchitas".
Based around jasmine – an ingredient used a lot in women’s fragrance and said to be an aphrodisiac – this appropriately named perfume has a raw, sexual edge that a confident man can easily get away with.
“It conjures ideas of hot summer nights and sticky heat through its overtness,” says Moore. “The smell is intense, full of bravado, carnal, with raw jasmine and honey notes and is definitely not a wilting wallflower of a perfume.”
BALMAIN VENT VERT

Changes to the formula in recent times have made it a little more woody and even more man-friendly.
JASMIN IMPERATRICE EUGENIE DE CREED
Dado que se diseñó especialmente para Eugenia de Montijo, emperatriz de Napoleón III, podría pensarse que esta fragancia de la casa de perfumes de lujo Creed es delicada y sumamente femenina, pero, según Craven, muchas de aquellas damas del siglo XIX, de apariencia frágil, preferían aromas fuertes y contundentes, y éste le sienta fantásticamente bien a un hombre con carácter.
Tiene una gran cantidad de lirio y sándalo cálidos, suaves y delicados, vainilla y un toque de cuero. El acorde de jazmín no es puro, frágil y blanco, sino profundo, oscuro y ligeramente especiado.
Given that it was designed especially for Eugenie di Montijo, Empress of Napoleon III, you might think this scent by luxury fragrance house Creed was delicate and uber-feminine but, says Craven, many of those fragile-seeming 19th century ladies preferred strong, punchy scents – and this one sits fantastically well on a man of character.
It has masses of warm, smooth, suave orris and sandalwood, vanilla and a hint of leather. The jasmine accord is not pure, fragile and white but deep, dark and faintly spicy.
TUBÉREUSE CRIMINELLE DE SERGE LUTENS
