Es una nueva técnica de decoración que está invadiendo las calles de Madrid, Valencia, Salamanca, Londres, Milán o Qatar. Arquicostura es el proyecto de la artista y diseñadora Raquel Rodrigo que fusiona en sus piezas el lenguaje del bordado y el arte callejero decorando con flores las paredes de las ciudades .
Para realizar sus obras, Raquel prepara previamente el alambre tejido junto con cordón de algodón de colores en su taller, para luego instalar las piezas por los edificios de la ciudad y sus alrededores. Una preciosa y original forma de ponerle poesía y naturaleza a la ciudad.
Increasing numbers of women are making a name for themselves in the street art scene in recent years. Instead of using smelly spray paint, they are distinguishing themselves by adapting techniques that are traditionally seen as 'women's work' into the urban fabric of public streets and buildings. So far, we've seen massive urban displays of lace-making, crochet and folded paper origami making their appearance.
Now, Spanish artist and set designer Raquel Rodrigo is bringing old-fashioned cross-stitching out into the open with her large-scale installations that weave a bit of colour into the city.
En ciudades españolas como Valencia o Salamanca se puede disfrutar de algunas de sus instalaciones florales y el resultado es delicioso y tremendamente primaveral. Estamos acostumbrados a ver arte urbano espectacular, pero nada como el colorido trabajo de Raquel Rodrigo que utilizando el tradicional punto de cruz crea singulares obras de arte. Para ello solo necesita una malla de alambre y cuerdas gruesas de colores para formar esas delicadas flores de colores con las que adorna las fachadas de los edificios de una manera que no habíamos visto antes.
Cross-stitching is the oldest form of embroidery known that's found all over the globe, where many different coloured X-shaped stitches are used to create a visual representation of something. Rodrigo creates these works by using wire mesh and thick, coloured ropes, which she arranges in various patterns. She prepares the piece indoors ahead of time, and when it's completed, it's rolled up, transported and attached to the wall.
Cruz a cruz, Raquel ha ido creciendo para convertirse en una de las creadoras más interesantes y ha unido arte, artesanía y diseño en un proyecto que mezcla la tradición textil tradicional con el diseño más contemporáneo. Sin prisa, pero sin pausa, Raquel y su equipo van haciendo grandes proyectos pasito a pasito, como la intervención para Cervezas Alhambra en Valencia; 16 personas bordaron un panel de 77m2 con 40.000 metros de cuerda con un diseño de un mosaico de La Alhambra.
Una manera de que las tradiciones sigan vivas, pero en otro formato y con otro uso. En vez de tela, usa estructuras metálicas y en vez de hilos, grandes cuerdas de algodón. Porque los tiempos cambian y hay que experimentar con materiales y formatos.
Thanks to her background in set design, Rodrigo also creates geometric, meshed frames that are also embroidered with this cross-stitch technique, which can be used for "guerrilla marketing" initiatives, like this one for her own company, Arquicostura. Her aim is to combine these traditional techniques with a street art presence to maximize the impact of these works, whatever their message.
Our cities are often hard-edged and drab places that can't always have the benefit of green spaces to soften them up. Obviously, the next best thing would be to have a bit of art up to soothe the eyes and spirit, and having these traditionally 'feminine' crafts translated for the urban space may be one way to do it, while also honouring the dignity of handicraft.
