La vida te depara sorpresas y, sin duda, navegar 7 días a bordo del Queen Mary 2 ha sido una de las más placenteras de toda mi vida. Y es que hacer la ruta entre Southampton y Nueva York en uno de los navíos más simbólicos de la historia te hace retroceder en el tiempo a otras épocas donde se cuidaban los detalles hasta el infinito, donde las formalidades importaban y donde el destino era el viaje en sí mismo.
Viajar en el Queen Mary 2 ha sido como meterse en una maravillosa cápsula del tiempo durante una semana y soñar a lo grande como a mi me gusta hacerlo.
Esta es la antigua ruta marítima que unía Reino Unido con Estados Unidos y que han hecho miles de personas, desde los primeros colonos del Mayflower en 1640 en busca de una vida mejor hasta los turistas de hoy en día. Del viaje me quedo con todo; aunque entrar en Nueva York viendo de frente la Estatua de la la Libertad eso, no se me olvidará jamás.
Traveling via ship has played a substantial role in my life, both in my travels and on a personal level. The nostalgic idea of seeing the world on a luxurious vessel gently meandering its way from port to port through faraway countries is of course a romantic one, and in my experience generally a far less stressful way to travel than a land vacation. Since my family's very first cruise, when I was a teenager, this way of traveling has quickly grown on me But while it's definitely not the most sustainable way of traveling (more on that another time), it's a completely unique experience.
This summer I was fortunate to have the opportunity to go on a Transatlantic voyage from Southampton to New York on board Cunard's Queen Mary 2, by far the most memorable and beautiful ship I have ever been on.
However, before leaving I was apprehensive. I had heard rumors of the more formal atmosphere found on board Cunard ships and I wasn't sure if it would be for me. But to my surprise, I loved sailing on the Queen Mary 2! It felt like a modern day reflection of the golden age of ocean liners - truly an experience that you should try at least once in your life.
Todo en este barco está lleno de pequeños detalles a tener en cuenta. Botado en el año 2004 por la reina de Inglaterra y construido en Francia, su pedigree salta a la vista: una grandiosa estructura que aparece vestida en traje de noche con la chimenea roja, divisa de la naviera Cunard, como broche. Su casco negro delata que el QM2 no es un barco de crucero. Es un transatlántico, un liner.
Es heredero de un linaje de embarcaciones con un aura especial que se alimenta de las vidas de miles de personas únicas. Desde los armadores que lo diseñaron, pasando por los astilleros que lo construyeron y hasta los pasajeros que lo disfrutan, nada en este barco es corriente. Y tampoco se puede hablar del Queen Mary 2 sin que parezca que se exagera sin pudor. Elegante a pesar de sus dimensiones, la longitud de su cuerpo supera la altura de la Torre Eiffel. Cuatro mil personas a bordo entre pasajeros y tripulación que se distribuyen en trece cubiertas repartidas en más de 70 metros de altura a la vista. Tan grande es que no cabe en el Canal de Panamá.
Oh well, I decided to cross the pond myself on the Queen Mary 2, which is the longest, tallest, widest, most luxurious passenger ship ever built. Her 30-knot speed allows her to leave lesser ships in her wake. Queen Elizabeth II christened this floating palace named after her grandmother in 2004 proclaiming, “I name this ship Queen Mary 2. May God bless her and all who sail on her” breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow. Her maiden voyage was from Southampton to America and it was this itinerary that I decided to retrace, the very same as the fateful Titanic. The difference between a cruise and a voyage is that the latter takes you from one place to another with no stops. There are blissful days when you see nothing but the drama of rolling waves and black nights filled with stars, made all the more brilliant by the absence of civilization; this is the stuff of dreams, romance and memories.
Cuando estás dentro del barco te das cuenta que el Queen Mary 2 es un medio de transporte que se habita, un navío para quienes lo importante no es llegar antes sino disfrutar del viaje en un entorno lujoso. El escenario, las actividades y el tiempo del que se dispone a bordo (siete días por trayecto transatlántico) permiten además socializar y compartir una experiencia inolvidable.
Si el exterior del barco es grandioso, no lo es menos su interior. La médula del barco es su vestíbulo, un inmenso espacio abierto a seis pisos –cubiertas– que sirve como intercambiador gracias a sus ascensores acristalados y sus escaleras de cine mudo. Desde el lujo más extravagante de los dúplex con mayordomo privado a las más que dignas cabinas interiores, hay tipos de alojamiento para todos los gustos y casi todos los bolsillos (la cabina más económica no es mucho más cara que un billete de avión) y actividades culturales y de ocio dignas de esta auténtica metrópoli flotante.
The staff unpacked my staffs while I explored the ship which has five indoor and outdoor swimming pools, seven Jacuzzis, a Canyon Ranch Spa, a gigantic movie theater that also houses the only planetarium at sea, a music hall featuring elaborate musicals, multiple gourmet restaurants (including one by Todd English), several tea rooms, a Veuve Clicquot Champagne bar, a ballroom with a 12-piece orchestra, a disco, a gym with a killer view of the horizon and games galore including golf, shuffle board, ping pong, paddle tennis, darts, backgammon, bingo, bridge and way too many other activities to list.
Additionally, the QM2 boasts the largest library at sea with breathtaking ocean panoramas, an hourly schedule of guest lectures by famous authors, actors, poets and scientists, not to mention classical concerts, piano and harp recitals, Shakespeare performances by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and an endless list of fitness classes including yoga, stretch and circuit training from which to choose.
Parte de esta Historia son sin duda los pasajeros. Además de Churchill o Eisenhower, la reina de Inglaterra o el sha de Persia, Cunard puede presumir de un elenco que incluye a Charlie Chaplin, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington o Walt Disney, sin olvidar a Jaqueline Onassis, H.G. Wells, Elizabeth Taylor o Tennesee Williams. La lista es larga y engrosa cada día entre aquellos que eligen esta manera de viajar, personas que no sólo pueden permitirse el pasaje sino que también disponen de su tiempo.
Cary Grant called the original Queen Mary “the eighth wonder of the world” and met one of his five wives at one of the ship’s black tie dinner dances. My favorite anecdotes are about cosmetics queen Helena Rubinstein, who tossed her 20-carat diamond earrings out the porthole of her cabin because she forgot that she had hidden them in the tissue box that she was discarding, and screen queen Greta Garbo, who crisscrossed the Atlantic regularly during the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s but insisted on traveling incognito; not only did she sail under an alias, she disembarked disguised as a stewardess.
Y si embarcar y navegar 7 días en él sobrecoge, la sensación de llegar a Nueva York, pasar debajo del puente casi acariciándolo y mirar a los ojos a sus rascacielos (la cima del Empire State Building sólo está 35 metros más elevada) es inspiración pura. En un escalofrío se sienten las milllones de miradas y sueños de quienes llegaron antes que uno.

And if embarking and saiing for 7 days in it, is amazing, the feeling of arriving in New York, passing under the bridge almost caressing it and looking into its skyscrapers eyes (the top of the Empire State Building is only 35 meters higher) is pure inspiration . In a shiver you feel the millions of glances and dreams of those who came before you.
