Los que me conocéis en persona ya sabéis que no soy una persona especialmente religiosa pero si estás en Armenia es lo que hay para visitar. Este país es tan antiguo que la frontera entre la historia, la religión y la leyenda a veces es confusa. Y os cuento esto porque de todos los lugares que vi el que me llamó la atención fue el Monte Ararat, el símbolo de Armenia que se ve desde prácticamente todo el país pero que ( ironías de la historia) hoy es tierra turca.
Dice la Biblia que en lo alto de su cima se posó el Arca de Noé tras el diluvio universal. No sé si será verdad o una simple leyenda pero verlo allí imponente y majestuoso desde lo alto del monasterio de Khor Virap no deja indiferente.
En la actual Armenia el Ararat es un símbolo omnipresente. Sigue apareciendo en su escudo de armas y no hay casa que no tenga una foto, cuadro o grabado con la silueta del monte. La pérdida de su monte sagrado es aún hoy motivo de nostalgia y melancolía para los armenios.
Those who know me personally already know that I am not someone especially religious but if you are in Armenia is what there is. This country is so old that the border between history, religion and legend is sometimes confused. And I tell you this because of all the places I saw the one that caught my attention was Mount Ararat, the symbol of Armenia that is seen from practically the whole country but which (ironies of history) today is Turkish soil.
The views of Mt. Ararat from Khor Virap are amazing. Mt. Ararat has long been been a symbol of Armenia, but it is currently located in eastern Turkey. The Armenia-Turkey border is less than a mile away from Khor Virap, and you can see the border’s fence and lookout towers from the monastery. The border is closed to everyone—to get from Armenia to Turkey, you have to go all the way through Georgia.
Ya sé que estoy hoy especialmente místico ( y quizás un poco espeso) con tanta religión pero es que este lugar es un centro de peregrinación tan importante o mas que el Camino de Santiago. Dice la historia ( o la leyenda) que aquí estuvo encarcelado el monje Grigor Vilatonochiv ( más tarde proclamado Gregorio el Iluminador) durante 13 años por difundir el cristianismo por tierras armenias. El rey de la época Tiridates III enloqueció tras perseguir a unas monjas venidas de Roma y fue el monje quien lo curó de la enfermedad. En agradecimiento el rey abrazó la nueva fe y Armenia se convirtió en el primer país cristiano del mundo. El lugar es tétrico y en la antigüedad estaba lleno de serpientes.
The reason that Khor Virap is so important to the Armenians from a religious point of view is that it’s where Gregory the Illuminator—aka St. Gregory, the guy who brought Christianity to Armenia and who was the first head of the Armenian church—was imprisoned for 13 years. He was actually kept in a pit for all that time (during which a local Christian woman brought him bread to keep him alive), and that pit is today the main attraction of Khor Virap. You walk into a small and assuming building within the walled Khor Virap compound and there’s a ladder in the corner, leading 20 feet down through a very narrow opening down into the subterranean pit. There’s not much down there—just an icon and some lights—and it was uncomfortably humid, but interesting all the same.
Justo a los pies del monasterio se encuentra un enorme cementerio al aire libre. Me llamaron mucho la atención las lápidas; son relieves de cuerpo entero del fallecido y algunos con todo lujo de detalles ( incluso aparecen fumando o yendo de caza). Son lápidas que resumen vidas.
Este camposanto es especialmente significativo y doloroso para los armenios porque aquí están enterrados los que dieron su vida por devolver el Monte Ararat ( actualmente en Turquía, como os dije antes) a tierra armenia.
At the foot of the monastery you will find a huge outdoor cemetery. The tombstones caught my attention; they are full length reliefs of the deceased and some with all details (even they appear smoking or hunting). Its like tombstones that summarize lives.
This cemetery is especially significant and painful for the Armenians because in this place are buried those who gave their life to return Mount Ararat (now in Turkey soil, as I said before) to Armenian land.
Verdad o leyenda sobre el Monte Ararat, lo cierto es que es un volcán formado por sucesivas erupciones de lava. No está activo y no hay ningún registro histórico de alguna erupción, sin embargo un terremoto relacionado con la actividad volcánica sacudió la zona en 1840.
La montaña pasó de Armenia a Turquía tras un pacto fronterizo con la URSS (que había ocupado Armenia). En su día, los turcos protestaron ante la URSS por el hecho de que la República Socialista Armenia incluyera el Ararat en su escudo de armas, siendo parte del territorio turco. Según se dice, desde el Kremlin respondieron si acaso la luna y la estrella que aparecen en la bandera turca también eran parte de su territorio.

True or legend about Mount Ararat, the truth is that it is a volcano formed by successive eruptions of lava. It is not active and there is no historical record of any eruption, however an earthquake related to volcanic activity shook the area in 1840.
The mountain passed from Armenia to Turkey after a border pact with the USSR (which had occupied Armenia). One day, the Turks protested to the USSR by the fact that the Armenian Socialist Republic included Ararat in its coat of arms, being part of the turkish territory. It is said that from the Kremlin they replied whether the moon and star appearing on the Turkish flag were also part of their territory.
