Estoy escribiendo este post sobre Atenas desde mi casa de Madrid y al elegir las fotos me ha entrado una nostalgia infinita. Es la que te da Grecia cuando la recuerdas. Pocas ciudades te dejan huella en tu vida y a pesar de lo caótico, del calor agobiante, de que parezca que todo funcione a medio gas, a pesar de los pesares, piensas en Atenas y quieres volver otra vez. Incluso te imaginas viviendo allí.
Esta ciudad es única en el mundo. O la adoras o la detestas. Muchos dicen que no ven ni rastro de la que fue cuna de nuestra civilización, que la ciudad es un amasijo de ruinas y poco más. Pero yo no creo que haya que quedarse sólo con las apariencias. El porqué se pusieron aquí los cimientos de nuestra cultura está en sus gentes; ellos son cordiales, amables, buenos tertulianos, de mente y corazón abiertos, con una sabiduría inmensa y con una picardía típicamente mediterránea.
Así es Atenas o, al menos, así la veo yo.
I am writing this post about Athens in my house in Madrid and watching the pictures I took there just a few weeks ago I am feeling a bit nostalgic. I guess that is what Athens left in you. Just a few cities in the world are worth to remember and Athens is one of them. It could be chaotic, polluted, and sometimes it seems Dakar rather than any european capital but it has something special.
It’s the birthplace of Western civilization and one of the oldest cities in the world, dating back thousands of years. There’s no doubt that Athens, the Mediterranean capital of Greece, is ripe with the history of both man and gods – but in this day and age, there’s so much more to experience than that.
Today, Athens is a metropolitan city of three-and-a-half million, flaunting a vibrant culture and temperament that’s simply one of a kind.
So this is Athens, the way I see it.

1. Subir a la Acropolis:
2. Tomarse un zumo de naranja natural … viendo la Acrópolis,
3. Fotografiar a la Guardia Presidencial delante del Parlamento:
4. Probar un café griego, “elinikó”; es decir con posos. Se sorbe, porque sino te atragantas con los posos. Los jóvenes toman un “café frapé”, que es nescafé batido, al que añaden hielo, leche etc.
5. Bajar por la calle Mitropóleos pasando por la Catedral Ortodoxa
6. Ir al Museo Arqueológico Nacional: las mejores esculturas clásicas del mundo, bronces y mármoles de la antigüedad. Y las colecciones de Micenas, la cerámica y los frescos de Santorini.
7. Probar un pincho de carne, “suvláki”: de carne de cerdo (también hay de pollo ) envuelto en una “pita”, un tipo de pan. Cuando mas grasiento y cutre el sitio, posiblemente mejor será.
8. Visitar la estación de metro de Sindagma y la de la Acrópolis, aunque no se viaje en metro: Están cuidadísimas y muestran parte de los restos arqueológicos que encontraron durante las excavaciones.
9. Pasear por el Mercado Central de Atenas, en la calle Athinás: está la lonja de pescado primero y la de la carne después. Ambiente digno de una película de Fellini bajo prisma oriental .
10. Subir al Licabeto: Es una de las colinas en el medio de Atenas y en su cima hay una pequeña iglesia de San Jorge , una cafetería cara y un restaurante elegante. Pero la vista es espectacular.

1. Acropolis and Acropolis Museum: This one’s a no-brainer.
2. Plaka: There’s no wrong time to visit Plaka. It’s always buzzing, always full of people.
3. Panathenaic Stadium: This is where the Olympics began!
4. Change of guards: The ceremony is quite adorable, especially because the entire thing takes place in slow motion!
5. Chapel of St. George on Mount Lycabettus: This petite chapel is placed right at the top of Mount Lycabettus, with a panoramic view of the entire city. You could enjoy a cocktail here at sunset while you watch the sun go down over Athens.
6. Dinner in the sky, on a crane:The table usually seats about 20 people, and the service, seating, ambience and music- every single thing is perfect. The only drawback I can think of is the absence of a restroom!
7. Shop at Monastiraki: Monastiraki is always buzzing otherwise as well, with designer stores and vintage shops, galleries and cafés around the street.
8. Half day trip to Cape Sounion: It’s where the ruins of the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon (God of the Sea) are located.
9. Visit Hydra: Hydra is an island a few hours off Athens. Everyone commutes on donkeys or on foot, and though it sounds imaginable, there is no other way to move about here!
10. Day trip to Delphi: Delphi is about 100 kms off Athens, and is famous for the ancient ruins of the “Oracle” –the seat where a whole lot of ancient decisions were taken.
Y si ya conoces los “básicos” de esta ciudad mi recomendación es que te pierdas una mañana por el barrio de Anafiotika, curiosamente muy cerca de la Acrópolis pero con poquísimos turistas. Quizás sea el aspecto desaliñado del barrio lo que les ahuyenta pero sus calles coloridas bien merecen una visita.
La historia de Anafiotika comienza en el siglo XIX cuando un grupo de albañiles de las islas griegas se mudó aquí para construir un palacio para el rey Otón. Decidieron trasladar las fachadas de su tierra natal mientras se alojaban en el continente. Las viviendas encastradas en la ladera dejaron callejuelas pequeñas para caminar. Aunque no lo creas, también tuvieron tiempo para construir dos iglesias. Así que es otro sitio que no te puedes perder.
And if you already know the “top ten” in Athens my personal advise is to go to Anafiotika a 19th century neighborhood on the northern slopes of the Acropolis hill, beside the entrance to the Agora. The masons who built it hailed from the island of Anafi, and were brought here by King Otto I to build his palace. Nestled above Plaka, Athens' center, and bustling Monastiraki, the old bazaar, Anafiotika seems far removed. There, bougainvilleas splash whitewashed walls and cats stalk sunny paths, evoking the island life the masons left behind.
Y creedme que esto no ha acabado. Esta ha sido mi tercera vez en Atenas y ya sabéis que no hay tercera sin cuarta; así que volveré aunque, para variar, me gustaría conocer la ciudad en invierno. Siempre he venido en primavera o en verano y la humedad de Atenas en esta época del año a mi me tira por los suelos. Kalimera Atenas.
And believe me, this is not over, not yet. This was my third time in Athens ( my first one was during the Olympic Games in 2004) and I promise to go back as soon as I can but I would like to do it during winter time. I just know the city in summer and the wet weather definite kills me specially now that I am getting older. So see you next time. Kalimera Athens.
