La localidad de Croydon, al sur de Londres, se ha despertado con todos los ojos puestos en Church Street. ¿El motivo? Una nueva tienda. Se trata de Gross Domestic Product, que ha abierto de la noche a la mañana en un local abandonado y ha suscitado el interés internacional. ¿Qué la hace especial? Que es de Banksy y contiene obras suyas.
No sé si recordareis que hace unos meses Banksy sorprendía con una obra en medio de los canales de Venecia. Ahora lo vuelve a hacer con la apertura de esta tienda. Pero del mismo modo que sus piezas suelen ser efímeras, esta ya viene con fecha de caducidad: el día 15 de octubre cerrará del mismo modo que ha aparecido.
Hay que reconocerle a Banksy su efecto sorpresa. Es, entre otras cosas, la clave del éxito de este artista.
Banksy appears to have opened a new installation in a vacant south London shop, with the display featuring the stab vest Stormzy wore at Glastonbury.
After the space popped up overnight, the graffiti artist claimed it was a homeware store he'd been forced to open amid a legal dispute with a greeting cards company.
In a statement, Banksy said the motivation behind the venture in Croydon, is 'possibly the least poetic reason to ever make some art'
He said: 'A greetings cards company is contesting the trademark I hold to my art, and attempting to take custody of my name so they can sell their fake Banksy merchandise legally. I think they're banking on the idea I won't show up in court to defend myself.'
A diferencia de lo que caracteriza cualquier tienda, Banksy ha comunicada que la suya mantendrá las puertas cerradas. Así, no será posible comprar ningún producto en ella, pero sí hacerlo por Internet por un precio que parte de las 10 libras (11,20 euros). Además, las luces permanecerán encendidas las 24 horas del día, como si se tratara de una exposición, pero con la peculiaridad de que se podrá adquirir el stock online. En su instagram el artista callejero ha dado pistas para quiénes visiten el lugar, y ha comentado que "probablemente, se aprecia mejor de noche".
Emblazoned with the name “Gross Domestic Product™” the pop-up shop is made up of a number of window displays filled with the artists work.
Some of the works on display include a screen with part of an artwork titled “Season’s Greetings” which appeared on a garage in Port Talbot, Wales last Christmas. The satirical mural depicts a child catching snow on his tongue, snow which is actually ash from a skip fire.
Also part of the installation is a stab vest worn by British rapper Stormzy at Glastonbury this year for a set in which the musician made some striking statements about the injustice of the British justice system.

Con esta denuncia, Banksy destinará el dinero que se obtenga de la venta a comprar un barco para el rescate de inmigrantes con la intención de reemplazar el que confiscaron las autoridades italianas. Así, quizás cualquiera que compre "estará cometiendo un delito", ha advertido el mismo artista en el comunicado.
Items being sold in the shop include welcome mats made from life vests salvaged from the shores of the Mediterranean, which have been hand-stitched by women in detainment camps in Greece.
Mark Stephens, an arts lawyer and founder of the Design and Artists Copyright Society, is advising Banksy on what he describes as 'frankly ludicrous litigation'.
According to this statement, prices in the store will start from £10 with all products handmade in the UK using existing or recycled materials wherever possible.

Banksy cuenta con una marca, pero al no usarla para la comercialización de productos, esta puede ser transferida para que un tercero la use. Así, con esta tienda pretende mantener el control de su nombre. El artista es conocido por su posición sobre el plagio y el copyright, y a pesar de esta apertura no cambia su idea: "sigo animando a cualquiera a copiar, tomar prestado, robar y rehacer mi arte para la diversión, la investigación académica o el activismo. Simplemente no quiero que alguien adquiera la custodia exclusiva de mi nombre.
Croydon cabinet member for culture leisure and sport, councillor Oliver Lewis told Euronews Living, “This is fantastic for Croydon. The great thing about street art is that it’s for everyone and Croydon has one of the largest collections in Europe”. He added that it was great that Banksy wanted to add to this collection.
The surprise launch of this shop comes just before the auction of Banksy’s “Devolved Parlaiment”painting that depicts the UK parliament with chimps in the place of politicians. On public display between 28 September and October 3 at Southeby’s auction house in London, the painting is expected to fetch between £1.5 and 2 million.
