De pequeño devoraba comics como galletas con chocolate. Me encantaban. Me ponía en la piel de los personajes, vivía sus peripecias y me gustaba que siempre tenían final feliz. Por eso cuando vivía en Bruselas me animaba muchísimo encontrarme en las fachadas de los edificios escenas de Tintin y el Capitan Haddock en tamaño XXL persiguiendo a los malos, a los hermanos Dalton a la fuga después de robar un banco o el Corto Maltés con su cigarrillo que nunca se apaga.
Son murales de la llamada "ruta del comic" belga , una iniciativa que empezó en 1991 como solución para renovar fachadas antiguas y se ha convertido en un atractivo turístico más de la ciudad, yo diría en un "must" de la capital belga.
Apart from hosting the European institutions, Brussels is the capital of beer, frites, chocolate, waffles and comics. And these are just few of the reasons why I love this city! Did you know that some of our most beloved comic heroes, like Tin Tin, Lucky Luke, Gaston, Gil Jourdan and Marsupilami, were actually born in Belgium? One of the most fun and original ways to discover Brussels and its comics heritage is to follow the Comic Strip Route.
Two years after the opening of the Belgian Comic Strip Centre in 1989, the project of the Comic Strip Route started in an effort to embellish empty walls in the city and pay homage to famous Belgian comic artists. Fast forward a few years later, the trail features over 50 colorful mural paintings and is one of Brussels’ landmarks and an interesting fun fact about the EU capital. The project keeps growing over time as new creations are added to the list and comic characters come alive in unexpected corners all around town.
La gran ventaja de hacer esta ruta del cómic es que yendo de uno a otro mural se recorre el centro más monumental de la ciudad, porque los belgas no han tenido ningún prejuicio a la hora de integrar estos murales contemporáneos extraídos de los tebeos en el entorno histórico de la ciudad, y lo cierto es que la integración es total, aprovechando fachadas, chaflanes o muros de solares para que los dibujantes trasladen las imágenes de sus viñetas al panorama urbano. Y es que el cómic está considerado el noveno arte en Bélgica, y tanto los guionistas como los ilustradores que hacen este tipo de trabajos poseen un importante prestigio en el país.
When I first moved to Brussels I stumbled on quite a few comic walls only to realize that there’s a whole “promenade bande dessinée” to explore. And so I did! I followed the map below from Visit Brussels with pictures and interesting details which literally felt like a treasure hunt game. By the end I had discovered some street art gems and unknown spots in my favourite neighbourhoods in Brussels – mission accomplished! ¿Por qué es tan importante el cómic en Bruselas y Bélgica? La importancia de este noveno arte se debe a que grandes autores como Hergé, cuya creación más conocida es Tintín, o Peyo, el creador de Los Pitufos nacieron en esta ciudad. No sólo hablamos de Tintín o de Los Pitufos, ya que también Lucky Luke, Marsupilami e incluso Spirou y Fantasio son belgas.
A día de hoy encontramos más de 40 murales en Bruselas. Desde murales que representan a Tintín, Tomás el Gafe, a los galos Astérix y Obélix, Lucky Luke e incluso a El Pequeño Spirou que nos harán sumergiremos en este noveno arte de lleno.
Why is the comic book so important in Brussels and Belgium? The key of this 9th art is the fact that great authors as Hergé, whose most famous creation is Tintin; or Peyo, the creator of The Smurfs; were born in this city. But we don't just talk about Tintin or The Smurfs: also Lucky Luke, Marsupilami, Spirou and Fantasio are Belgian.
As a result of these great creations, the bande dessinée, the comic book in French, has had a very important develop and marketing in the city of Brussels. Thus, we find the Belgian Comic Strip Center (Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée) and also The Comic Book Route, where we can see 40 wall paintings on the facades of different buildings, representing the most important characters of the Belgian bande dessinée.
Tanto si eres un friki de los comics como si estos personajes te recuerdan a tu infancia, Bruselas es tu ciudad. Y si te ha sabido a poco también podéis visitar en la ciudad el Museo del Comic, otro sólo de Tintin y multitud de librerías especializadas en la materia. Allí no sólo encontrareis revistas y libros sino también posters a tamaño XL, figuritas de los personajes ....en fin que acabareis como yo: pensando en francés.
Comic strips are the pride of Belgium. It is the one country where comic strips have grown from a popular medium into an art in its own right. Indeed, with more than 700 comic strip authors, Belgium has more comic strip artists per square kilometer than any other country in the world. In the Belgian capital, you can find dozens of specialized shops, statues, wall paintings, bars and museums dedicated to the art. Nowhere else in this world are comics so strongly rooted in reality and in people's imagination.
