Pocas veces se tiene la oportunidad de ver una exposición tan completa como la que ofrece estos días en Madrid El Palacio Real y el Museo Thyssen-Bornenisza sobre los pintores italianos del siglo XVII, y en especial acerca de Caravaggio, el artista más destacado de su época.
La mayoría de las obras nunca se ha expuesto con anterioridad o se encontraban en lugares poco accesibles por lo que la visita es un lujo para los sentidos. Además todas han sido restauradas para la muestra por lo que ,si las habías visto antes, ahora lucen como nuevas. Si empezais la visita por el Palacio Real no podéis perderos la obra maestra de Caravaggio “Salomé con la cabeza del Bautista” y el “Cristo Crucificado" de Bernini. Alucinantes.
Last weekend I went to see one of the “must go” exhibition for this summer in Europe about Caravaggio´s works. Around one hundred 17th century works, including paintings and sculptures, are on display at the Royal Palace in Madrid, some of which have never been seen by the public or are of limited access, forming part of the artistic pieces preserved in the National Heritage Royal Collections.
The exhibition revolves around Caravaggio’s painting, the most outstanding painter of his time, Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, one of the masterpieces that is part of the Spanish Royal Collections.
A study, documentation, research and restoration campaign has been carried out over several months which has offered a better understanding of the works and collection with new attachments to artists like Giovan Francesco Romanelli or Guido Reni.
Sin Caravaggio, la historia de la pintura hubiera sido muy diferente. Fue uno de los artistas más influyentes de su tiempo, su pintura fue revolucionaria, y rompió con todo lo establecido convirtiéndose en uno de los grandes pilares de la historia de la pintura. Su estela llegó a los pintores del norte, a holandeses, flamencos y franceses que, junto con el maestro, protagonizan la muestra que el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza dedica a "Caravaggio y los pintores del norte".

The second part of the exhibition is located at The Thyssen Museum . It is putting on an exhibition about the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio and his influence on a group of painters from Northern Europe who, fascinated by his work, spread his style through their creations.

Como veis, Caravaggio se esforzó en que los rostros de sus modelos transmitieran los sentimientos de forma muy intensa. Es muy importante que os fijeis en las manos de sus personajes, que tienen su razón de ser y casi vida propia, y en los gestos, siempre subrayados por la utilización de la luz.
Muy frecuentemente en sus obras no hay fondo y todo es penumbra (o los espacios son muy pequeños), porque lo interesante son las figuras, sus rasgos acentuados, los surcos del rostro, sus pies a veces sucios.
Tenéis que daros prisa si queréis ver las exposiciones. La del Palacio Real estará hasta el 16 de octubre y la del Museo Thyseen-Bornemitza hasta el 18 de septiembre. Sólo os digo que merecen la pena.
The importance of Caravaggio in 17th century painting is undeniable. He has been described as the greatest Italian painter of his time. His innovative departure from the idealised style of the 16th century, when painting religious themes, brought much criticism, but was influencial in the development of many artists to come.Many of Caravaggio's early works are disturbingly erotic, revealing a tempestuous and volatile character. His life was indeed as much a drama as the images he portrayed in his paintings. Caravaggio had a violent temper and was uncompromising with many who crossed his path.
The real life plot of his life drew to a tragic climax when his passionate behaviour led to a charge of murder. It is said that he fought over the score of a court tennis match, killed his opponent and fled.
