En Los Angeles, donde prácticamente no hay farolas en las calles ( o mejor dicho no hay calles tal como nosotros las entendemos aquí en Europa) y es casi imposible caminar, es una grata sorpresa encontrarse un oasis de luminosidad tan grande que es imposible dejar de mirarlo una y mil veces.
Se trata de una obra del artista Chris Burden llamada “Urban Lights” y que desde su inauguración en 2008 se ha convertido en todo un reclamo a la entrada del LACMA, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Los Angeles.
Si de día el conjunto es divertido por la noche es sencillamente espectacular y allí que me fui para verlo y disfrutarlo . ¿Os suena el escenario y no sabeis de qué? Una de las escenas más míticas de la película "Sin Compromiso" sucede en este lugar; Ashton Kutcher y Natalie Portman protagonizan una de las pelea más romántica de todos los tiempos.
In Los Angeles where there are practically no streetlights in the streets and it is almost impossible to take a walk, it is a pleasant surprise to find an oasis of luminosity so great that it is impossible to stop looking at them a thousand times. Esta maravillosa instalación consta de 202 farolas restauradas de entre 1920 y 1930 casi todas de ellas del sur de California. En principio el artista empezó a coleccionarlas desde el año 2000 simplemente porque le gustaba y nada más. Las compraba por unos 900 dólares cada una y las restauraba con mimo.
En 2008 el LOCMA le encargó una obra en conmemoración del 50 aniversario del Museo. El resultado es el que veis, un magnifico parque de farolas que iluminan la entrada del museo y que se está convirtiendo poco a poco en uno de los lugares más visitados en Los Angeles.
The 2008 installation consists of 202 restored street lamps from the 1920s and 1930s. Most of them once lit the streets of Southern California.
Burden first began collecting street lamps in December 2000 without a specific work in mind, and continued collecting them for the next seven years. He purchased his first two lamps at the Rose Bowl Flea Market after bargaining down the price from $950 to $800, each.
Most of the street lamps came from the streets of Southern California, including Hollywood, Glendale, and Anaheim, with some from Portland, Oregon. Among the 17 styles represented are the Outpost, Hollywood and Pacific Twin. The largest, most ornate, called Rose Poles, were from downtown Los Angeles; a few can still be seen at the corner of Broadway and Sixth.
