Que esta colonia de casas de estilo inglés en Madrid haya sobrevivido a casi un siglo de especulación urbanística es un auténtico milagro. La Cruz del Rayo es un pequeño barrio desconocido incluso para los madrileños ya que se encuentra “escondido" entre varias arterias que conectan toda la zona norte de la ciudad y nunca aparece en las guías turísticas de la ciudad.
Aquí es donde mi amiga Coriandro pasea de vez en cuando para reflexionar y , como dice ella, escuchar el viento. Con ella estuve allí el viernes y sí, es cierto, la calma es tan grande que puedes escuchar el viento sin temor y sin prisas. En la Cruz del Rayo no vais a encontrar ni cines, ni teatros, ni locales de moda...sólo calma, vegetación, casas bajas de estilo inglés de principios del siglo XX y, si os interesa ( que espero que así sea) la historia de una colonia amenazada por derribo en varias ocasiones y que se ha convertido en un pequeño barrio inglés en Madrid.
It’s a miracle that this colony of english style houses in Madrid has survived almost a century of urban speculation. The Cruz del Rayo is a small neighborhood even unknown to the people of Madrid because it's "hidden" between several arteries that connect all of the northern area of the city and it never appears in the tourist city guides.
Here is where my friend Coriandro stroll from time to time to reflect and , as she says, listen to the wind. We took a nice walk last friday and yes, it was true, the calm was so large that you can listen to the wind without fear and without haste. At The Cruz del Rayo you are not going to find neither cinemas, nor theaters...only calm, vegetation, English style houses of the early twentieth century and, if you are interested in ( which I hope so) the history of a colony threatened by demolition on several occasions and that has become a small English neighborhood in Madrid.
La colonia Cruz del Rayo fue la primera en nuestro país que siguió a rajatabla las directrices del modelo ciudad-jardín de Howard, un ideólogo inglés de principios del siglo XX que promovía la existencia de comunidades periféricas a la gran urbe pero con abundante predominio de zonas verdes, casas bajas y rodeada por una avenida circular para las escuelas, comercios y edificios representativos. Después de la construcción de la colonia de la Cruz del rayo han surgido muchas, pero ninguna como esta. El ambiente de principios de siglo se mantiene intacto lo que de da un valor extraordinario, único e irrepetible.
The Colony of Cruz del Rayo was the first in our country that followed the strictly guidelines of Garden city movement by Howard, an ideologue English from the beginning of the twentieth century that promoted the existence of peripheral communities to the big city but with plenty of green areas, houses not big buildings all surrounded by a circular avenue with schools, shops and representative buildings.
After the construction of the colony many have arisen, but none like this one. The atmosphere of the beginning of the century remains intact which gives it an extraordinary value, unique and unrepeatable.
Muchos han sido los intentos de demolición de este magnifico barrio. Y es que su privilegiada situación en la zona norte de la ciudad entre el Paseo de la Castellana y la calle Príncipe de Vergara lo han convertido en “objeto de deseo” para especuladores inmobiliarios sin escrúpulos. Sin embargo y gracias sobre todo a sus vecinos, la colonia es desde 1980 Zona Protegida de Interés Histórico y así queda a salvo de todo.
En la actualidad Cruz del Rayo constituye un espacio urbano singular, de especiales caracteristicas ambientales y gran calidad residencial por su entorno tranquilo y agradable, con muy baja incidencia de contaminación acústica y ambiental. Las modestas casitas del primer cuarto del siglo XX son ahora prototipo de viviendas de alto nivel, cuyos exclusivos propietarios compiten en estatus con los de El Viso, Parque Conde Orgaz, La Moraleja o Somosaguas, zonas de alto poder adquisitivo.
There have been many attempts to demolish this wonderful district because its privileged situation in the area north of the city between the Paseo de la Castellana and Principe de Vergara Street, two main avenues that connect the city from south to north, so that´s why it had become "object of desire" to estate speculators without scruples. However and thanks above all to its neighbors, the colony is since 1980 Protected Area and it is safe from everything.
At present times La Cruz del rayo is a unique urban space with very high quality way of living, nice and quiet surroundings and a little lighting and noise pollution.
Y bueno, seguramente estareis esperando a que os recomiende alguna galería de arte, tienda o restaurante en Cruz del Rayo pero esta vez no lo voy a hacer porque os estaréis perdiendo el mayor atractivo de esta pequeña colonia: escuchar el viento. Que lo disfrutéis.
And well I am sure you´ll want me to recommend some art gallery, shop or restaurant in Cruz del Ray but this time I will not do that because if I do you'll be losing the major attraction of this small colony: the sound of the wind. Enjoy it.
