Es, ni más ni menos, que este maravilloso jardín Botánico. Si, si, un maravilloso edén a las puertas del Mediterráneo con más de 3000 especies vegetales desde tropicales a semidesérticas. Sus origines datan de 1832 cuando todavía Argelia era colonia francesa; ellos aprovecharon un terreno pantanoso a las afueras de Argel para crear un jardín de pruebas, un lugar para importar vegetales europeos en suelo africano y así adaptarlos al nuevo clima.
Sin darse cuenta lo que estaban haciendo era un auténtico jardín Botánico lleno de misterio y exotismo.

Oh well, the great secret of Algiers is this magnificent Botanical garden. Oh yes, a wonderful Eden at the gates of the Mediterranean Sea with more than 3000 plant species from tropical to semi-desert. It cames from 1832 when Algeria was still a French colony; the Frenchs took advantage of a swampy land outside Algiers to create a test garden, a place to import European vegetables into African soil and adapt them to the new climate.
Without realizing what they were doing they created an authentic Botanical garden full of mystery and exoticism.

Pasear por este hermoso parque urbano es una verdadera experiencia para el espíritu, uno de esos momentos que siempre recuerdas por lo inesperado. Tiene más de treinta hectáreas y es el sitio ideal para relajarte del ajetreo de la bulliciosa Argel.
Como te decía al principio, comenzó a construirse en el año 1832 siguiendo los estilos francés y británico, y desde entonces se ha convertido en el gran espacio verde de la capital muy concurrido sobre todo durante la tarde.
En una primera instancia el jardín ocupaba una superficie de 5 hectáreas y luego se aumentó a unas 18 hectáreas, así se transformó en el vivero más importante de la zona con distintas especies de árboles, arbustos, hierbas y más tarde se fueron agregando especies más exóticas.
En la actualidad el parque tiene 58 hectáreas y, entre sus colecciones, vale la pena detenerse a ver sus plantas ornamentales, palmas, cactus, árboles y arbustos, árboles frutales exóticos y plantas endémicas de Argelia.
When thinking of visiting North Africa few people would choose Algeria as their first destination choice; not because it doesn’t have a lot to offer but simply due to the lack of knowledge and misconceptions surrounding the country.
One of the first stops in Algeria is the Jardin d’Essai du Hamma or the Botanical Garden of El Hamma in Algiers. The stunning garden, measuring 58 hectares provides visitors a cool walk through its walkways that boast hundreds of species of plants, decorated fountains, zoo and art museums.
The garden’s main function in the beginning was diffusing useful plants for medicinal, economic and commercial purposes before scientific and horticultural activities were adopted.
The Garden’s location in the Bay of Algiers in the Hamma district enjoys a perfect microclimate between the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains’ protection from strong dessert winds
Lo que más sorprende es su enorme variedad; por un lado los exuberantes arboles y plantas tropicales ( sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta que a tan sólo 50 km al sur empieza el desierto del Sahara) y por otro el maravilloso jardín francés lleno de rosas, margaritas y todas las especies europeas que te puedas imaginar.
Toda esta variedad hace de este jardín de ensayo uno de los botánicos más bellos de todo el planeta y, curiosamente, está lleno de anécdotas. Recibe la visita de Napoleón III en 1865, Karl Marx lo toma como terapia de descanso en 1882 y aquí se rodaron escenas de la primera película de Tarzán en 1932. ¿ A qué es curioso?
As you enter the garden you immediately notice how the main two designs of the garden face each other. One garden hosts a large space from the edge of the sea to the foot of the mountain where the Museum of Fine Arts is located. This part of the garden is easily noticeable with its alignment a nod to the French gardens of the 18th century- but with a Mediterranean twist.
The garden hosts hundreds of plant species from all fields of agriculture, horticulture and botanical research. The main categories are grouped into food plants, medicinal plants, economic and industrial plants.
Como habéis podido comprobar vosotros mismos en las fotos, el jardín es un auténtico pulmón verde de la ciudad y uno de los lugares imprescindibles de tu visita a Argel.
Si quieres disfrutar de toda la calma y la magia que te ofrece el parque yo te recomendaría que fueses por la mañana, sólo verás los jardineros y alguna que otra parejita disfrutando del paseo.
En cualquier caso ve, respira hondo y déjate llevar por la quietud del lugar. Que lo disfrutes.
As you saw in the pictures, the garden is a real green lung of the city and one of the essential places of your visit to Algiers.
If you want to enjoy all the calm and magic that the park offers, I would recommend you to go in the morning, you will only see the gardeners and the odd couple enjoying the trip.
In any case just go, take a deep breath and let yourself be carried away by the stillness of the place. Enjoy it.
