El Whitney Museum of American Art en Nueva York, más conocido como The Whitney, es uno de los museos que tal vez no esté en tu lista de imprescindibles si viajas a Nueva York, pero yo creo que, junto con el MOMA y el Guggenheim, debería ser el complemento perfecto para los que tienen interés en el arte moderno.
El Whitney tiene un enfoque particular y muy comprometido con causas sociales; está dedicado a las obras de artistas estadounidenses del siglo XX, muchos de ellos vivos. Allí podrás ver trabajos de Edward Hopper, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Keith Haring…entre otros muchos.

El museo lleva el nombre de su fundadora, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, miembro de la conocida familia Vanderbilt. En 1931 creó este museo como trampolín para nuevos artistas americanos con ideas innovadoras que se encontraban con obstáculos a la hora de promocionar sus obras poco convencionales.
El foco principal del museo es el arte norteamericano del siglo XX. La colección permanente es enorme y cuenta con 21.000 obras de arte, creadas por más de 3000 artistas. La colección te muestra las influencias que el arte americano ha tenido desde 1900. Contiene pinturas, esculturas, dibujos, impresiones, fotografías, instalaciones artísticas y nuevas artes gráficas. La exhibiciones temporales también merecen la pena. Una de las más famosas fue la que mostraba el trabajo de Jeff Koons. Algunas de sus obras de arte forman parte de la colección permanente del Whitney.
First opened in 1931, the Whitney Museum of American Art is perhaps the most important museum dedicated to American art and artists. Its collection spans the 20th and 21st century and contemporary American art, with a particular emphasis on the work of living artists. More than 3,000 artists have contributed to its permanent collection of more than 21,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, videos, film, and photographs. The signature Biennial exhibition showcases work created by invited artists, uniquely highlighting recent developments in American art.
After the Metropolitan Museum of Art refused her endowment and collection, sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney established the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1931 to house the collection of more than 500 works of art by American artists that she had acquired beginning in 1907. She was considered the leading patron of American art until her death in 1942.
The Whitney is known for its works in Modernism and Social Realism, Precisionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Postminimalism. Artists featured at the museum include Alexander Calder, Mabel Dwight, Jasper Johns, Georgia O’Keeffe and David Wojnarowicz.
Entre 1966 y 2014 el museo estaba en Madison Avenue, en el Upper East Side. A mediados del 2015 cambió de ubicación por cuarta vez. El nuevo edificio está entre High Line y el río Hudson, que se pueden ver desde el museo. Es una bonita construcción, obra de Renzo Piano.
Reserva como mínimo un par de horas, porque es un museo muy extenso, con cientos de obras permanentes repartidas en nueve plantas. A pesar del tamaño de la colección, en el Whitney nunca sientes que te falte espacio, ni siquiera cuando hay afluencia de público. Para moverte entre los pisos puedes usar las escaleras, pero si está abierto, te recomiendo que subas por al ascensor diseñado por Richard Artschwager, ¡una obra de arte más!
Its first location was in Greenwich Village on West Eighth Street. The museum's expansion has made it necessary to relocate several times. In 1966, it moved to a building designed by Marcel Breuer on Madison Avenue. In 2015, the Whitney Museum moved again to a new home designed by Renzo Piano. It sits between the High Line and the Hudson River in the Meatpacking District. The building has 200,000 square feet and eight floors with several observation decks.
Still, the museum’s reputation rests mainly on its temporary shows, particularly the exhibition everyone loves to hate, the Whitney Biennial. Held in even-numbered years, the Biennial remains the most prestigious (and controversial) assessment of contemporary art in America.
Y como os dije al principio las vistas desde las terrazas del Whitney es una atracción turística más.El museo está situado en un extremo de la High Line, muy cerca del río Hudson, y las vistas desde la terraza de la planta 8 te alucinarán: abarcan desde el río y Nueva Jersey, al otro lado, hasta el rascacielos One World Trade Center y el sur de Manhattan. Aunque lo mejor es ver las calles del Meatpacking District, con sus edificios rojizos y el bullicio de taxis y gente, y el Empire State Building levantándose al fondo.

There are lots of opportunities to go outside at this museum, and it may give you a reprieve from the crowded inside galleries. Balconies provide panoramic views, with the Hudson River on one side, and the High Line and the Empire State Building on the other. It's a fantastic indoor-outdoor way to experience the building's design.
Leave time for a stroll on the nearby High Line, the elevated freight rail line that's been transformed into a city park. It features outdoor sculptures and murals -- and the best mid-level views of New York City on an uninterrupted walkway from Gansevoort Street (near the museum) to West 34th Street between 10th and 11th avenues.
