Apoyada en la pared de piedra del número 42 de la calle Pez del barrio Malasaña en Madrid, una estatua de bronce a tamaño real de una mujer de pelo corto que sostiene un par de libros llama la atención. Su nombre es Julia, y sobre ella gira una de mis leyendas urbanas favoritas, de hace más de 150 años. La verdad es que no se sabe muy bien si Julia existió o no, pero la historia merece ser contada.
Leaning on the stone wall of 42 Pez Street in Malasaña district of Madrid, a life-size bronze statue of a short-haired woman holding a couple of books draws attention. Her name is Julia, and it is one of my favorite urban legends from more than 150 years ago. Her history is worth being told even thought nobody knows if she was real or not. Just enjoy it.
Todo comienza a mediados del siglo XIX cuando sólo los hombres tenían derecho a acceder a la universidad. En este contexto, el boca a boca hizo circular los rumores sobre una misteriosa mujer que había estado asistiendo a la Universidad Central de la calle San Bernardo. Esta mujer resultó ser Julia que consiguió estar en las aulas porque se vestía de hombre.
Con el paso del tiempo la leyenda se ha mantenido viva hasta el punto de que, en 2003, el escultor y pintor Antonio Santín brindó su particular homenaje a esta misteriosa mujer de la que hoy en día no se sabe nada más. A su obra callejera, el autor la llamó «Tras Julia».
Everything begins during mid-nineteenth century when only men had the right to enter university. In this context, people started spreading rumors about a mysterious girl who had been attending the Central University of San Bernardo Street. This girl turned out to be Julia who managed to be in the classrooms because she dressed as a man.
Over time, the legend has remained alive to the point that, in 2003, the sculptor and painter Antonio Santín gave his particular tribute to this mysterious woman of which nowadays nothing else is known. To his street work, the author called it “To the Track Julia".
Y así, como veis, Julia reposa en la pared del hoy en día Palacio Bauer, la antigua Universidad Central de Madrid. La suya. Ella permanece quieta, tranquila, como si estuviera esperando a alguien para entrar a clase aunque no siempre fue así. En 2010 la estatua fue víctima de un acto vandálico y fue llevada a restaurar. Los Bomberos tuvieron que cortarla para separarla del suelo y volver a traerla de vuelta algo más de un año después.
Aunque ha perdido su dorado inicial, los transeúntes conservan su cariño hacia Julia, una de las vecinas más queridas del barrio de Malasaña.
As you can see Julia rests on the wall of today's Palacio Bauer, the old Central University of Madrid. Her place. She remains quiet, calm, as if she were waiting for someone to enter class, although it was not always like that. In 2010 the statue was victim of a vandalism act and was taken to restore. The Firemen had to cut it to separate it from the ground and bring it back a little over a year later.
Although it has lost its initial gold case, passers-by retain their love for Julia, one of the most beloved neighbors in Malasaña district.
