Nadie te prepara para lo que estás a punto de ver. Este inmenso desierto de dunas rojas en la costa de Namibia supera cualquier expectativa. Su belleza es indescriptible y su quietud hace que se te pierda la vista hacia la nada y que toda tu vida pase delante de ti en menos de un minuto.
Es el desierto del Namib, las dunas más altas y viejas del planeta. Un arenal junto al mar de 1,600 kilómetros patrimonio de la humanidad que data de la era en la que se extinguieron los dinosaurios hace más de 55 millones de años.
Namib significa en la lengua local de los namibios inmensidad; extensiones descomunales de arena que reciben anualmente tan sólo ocho milímetros de lluvia, y donde milagrosamente hay vida gracias a una capa de niebla que suele cubrir la región gracias al viento y el agua fría procedente del Atlántico.
Estas dunas están protegidas dentro del parque nacional Namib-Naukluft, que suma una extensión más grande que Suiza, y esconden un mínimo caudal de ríos secos subterráneos que, de vez en cuando, generan oasis en la superficie.
En el corazón de este desierto, onduladas laderas quitan el aliento a cualquier viajero que pretende sondearlas. Los pliegues rojizos de este desierto custodian las dunas de arena más grandes de todo el planeta, conformando un paisaje de verdaderos rascacielos de arena que se moldean a capricho del viento formando líneas paralelas en la costa y con formas estrelladas en el interior.

There’s a slight stinging on my legs, exposed below my shorts, as the wind hits them with full force. I’ve turned my face away from the gusts and I’m trudging uphill regardless. The strength of the wind is making the climb up this dune hard enough, but the added difficulty is coming from all the tiny sand particles that are being picked up and slammed into me at gale force speed.
I wonder if there’s more sand in the wind than in the dune beneath me – and that’s saying something, seeing as the dune is 85 metres high. I glance back down the trail of footsteps that curve along the ridge of the sandy hill to the ground. It looks like the spine of a giant red dinosaur. One that’s taken me about half-an-hour to walk up.
This is Sossusvlei in Namibia, probably the easiest part of the enormous Namib Sand Sea to access (climbing conditions excepted). The red and orange dunes here roll on as far as you can see, stretching out for about 400 kilometres in total. From the top of this one, which I do eventually reach, I look out at just a small fraction of one of Africa’s natural wonders.
En este pintoresco cuadro, Sossusvlei es la atracción más popular de todo el país. Como si de una cazuela de arcilla se tratara, este salar está jalonado por murallones de gigantescas dunas de arena roja. Dentro, esqueletos de plantas muertas bailan con el viento. Este lugar, que en el idioma local significa punto de no retorno, ofrece las vistas más espectaculares del lugar que puedes optar por ver en paseos en globo aerostático, helicóptero o quad, o en caminatas por el desierto, parapente y sandboard.
En este genuino paisaje se encuentra la célebre Duna 45, desde donde se avista el amanecer más hechizante del país. Y si queréis hacer un poco de ejercicio id a la Duna 7, la mayor del mundo, con 380 metros.
A tan sólo dos kilómetros de Sossusvlei, Deadvlei es, como su nombre indica, un lugar inhabitable: el cambio en el curso del agua hizo que pasara de oasis de tierra firme a escenario del apocalipsis, ya que no hay suficiente humedad para que los árboles muertos se descompongan, provocando que los restos permanezcan en su sitio.
El paisaje es, como poco, inquietante.
Experts think the Namib Sand Sea is probably the oldest desert in the world. It’s one of Namibia’s biggest national parks and one of only two World Heritage Sites in the country. So, it’s no surprise that the area is well protected, and I think the local authorities should be commended for the way they’ve managed tourism in a way that is sustainable and accessible. It’s forbidden to climb most of the sand dunes but the one I struggle up – Dune 45 – has been set aside for visitors to experience. Some other parts of the Sossusvlei area can only be reached by 4WD and the rangers drive tourists in and out to reduce damage to the environment.
Even the highlight of this region, Deadvlei, is still inaccessible by road and requires a 20-minute walk through the desert. It’s worth it to experience the eerie landscape of skeleton-like trees that died more than 700 years ago but have been preserved by the dry air and blackened by the sun, sitting in the bright white clay pan and surrounded by a background of red dunes.
Lindando con Angola y Sudáfrica, este desierto dispone de una amplísima muestra de la fauna del continente. Pueblan el paisaje singulares árboles de Camelthorn, llenos de espinas y con profundas raíces que alcanzan hasta cincuenta metros bajo sus pies. Adornando la aridez, las welwitschias conquistan el terreno, esta planta única en su especie sobrevive embebiendo el rocío de la niebla desde épocas jurásicas, ya que puede vivir hasta dos mil años.
La fauna de esta región ha desarrollado inteligentes sistemas de refresco, como los elefantes adaptados al desierto o las gacelas órice, con una elevada temperatura corporal de hasta 40 grados. Suricatas, chacales, avestruces, arañas, escarabajos y serpientes son otros de sus habitantes, que toman prestada el agua de la niebla. Todos ellos pueden verse en safaris organizados por los operadores locales, quienes claman que este desierto ofrece vistas que ningún otro lugar de la Tierra tiene.
Hay muchas opciones para disfrutar de este lugar único en la tierra. Lo mejor es en tu propio vehículo, pero si puedes te recomiendo otra opción que te hará ver las cosas desde otra dimensión: en helicóptero.
The Namib Desert was probably the most unique place I have ever been. The landscapes are gorgeous, and even though we were there in the highest season possible, you are under the constant impression that you are in the middle of nowhere. We could drive for three straight hours without seeing another car or person.
To get to the Park region we rented a car and drove for five hours on mostly gravel roads. I highly recommend renting a SUV or the drive can get uncomfortable. I cannot get enough of my Namibian days, and can’t wait to go back to explore the rest of the country. However, if you have a few days, I highly recommend taking this trip to the Namib Desert.
Dune 45 is located in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. As we drove through the park, we approached km 45 where Dune 45 is located. It is the one closest to the road, so several people are happy to try to climb it. Looking at it from the ground it does not look like a challenging climb, but after starting my way up I quickly realized it was deceiving.
For a better way to enjoy I took a helicopter trip. Unforgettible!

All the staff is super nice (including Baylis, a very friendly dog who won't leave your side for a moment).
La mejor fecha para venir hasta aquí es durante julio y agosto. En estos meses la temperatura ronda los 25 grados de máxima y los 7 de mínima por lo que podrás disfrutar de toda maravilla sin derramar una gota de sudor.

I was visiting Namib Desert in the winter so the weather was great for it, but climbing in the summer was hard under the 40c sun. Most people go in the early hours of the morning in order to avoid the heat and to see the changing colors of the sand as the sun rises. The view at the top is incredible and worth the effort.
Just pack and go. You will never forget it.
