Qué ganas tenía de organizar una escapada por la Ribera del Duero, en Valladolid, para disfrutar del vino en toda su extensión.
Para mi el vino es mucho más que una bebida; es sinónimo de paisaje, tradición, cultura, historia, arte, salud, convivencia, de disfrutar compartiendo y de estimular los cinco sentidos.
Por eso me fui a Peñafiel, un pequeño pueblo a poco más de 2 horas de Madrid, donde todo gira en torno al vino y que, curiosamanete, fue recomendaba por el periódico The New York Times en 2018, como uno de los 52 destinos a visitar en el mundo. El único de España junto a Sevilla.
Toda esta zona de Valladolid es conocida como La Milla de Oro del Vino por la categoría de las añadas y el glamour de sus bodegas, con tan sólo un corto paseo en coche reconocerás un buen puñado de ellas.
Yo te aconsejo que te pares y disfrutes de una visita a las Bodegas Protos, la primera que se creó en la zona allá por el 1927. Su experiencia y calidad es el sello que la identifica. Una bodega con gran trayectoria profesional, la cual recibió la medalla de oro por sus vinos tintos en la Exposición Universal de Barcelona en 1929 y que se encuentra justo debajo del icónico Castillo de Peñafiel.
Catar los vinos de Protos es catar historia, recuerdos y hasta mitos de la Ribera del Duero y de Castilla León. Sus vinos, además, siempre se han distinguido de los demás por su estructura, modo de crianza y longevidad.
Por cierto ¿Sabes el significado de Protos? Viene del griego y significa “primero”. Por algo será, digo yo.
How I wanted to arrange a trip to Ribera del Duero, in Valladolid, to enjoy wine in all its glory.
For me, wine is much more than a drink; it is a synonym for landscape, tradition, culture, history, art, health, sharing and stimulating all five senses.
That's why I went to Peñafiel, a small town barely two hours from Madrid, where everything is about wine and which, it is curious to note, was recommended by The New York Times in 2018 as one of the 52 destinations to visit in the world. The only one in Spain apart from Seville.
This entire area of Valladolid is known as the Golden Mile of Wine due to the category of the grape harvests and the glamour of its wineries. With just a short drive you will recognize a few of them.
I recommend a visit to Bodegas Protos, the first one created in the area in 1927. Its experience and quality is the hallmark that identifies it. A winery with a great professional background, which received the gold medal for its red wines at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929 and stands just below the iconic Peñafiel Castle.
Tasting Protos' wines is tasting history, memories and even myths of the Ribera del Duero and Castilla León. Its wines, moreover, have always been distinguished from others by their structure, ageing methods and longevity.
By the way, do you know the meaning of Protos? It comes from the Greek and means "first". There must be a reason for this, I think.
Que las bodegas de Protos sean las más visitadas de toda Ribera del Duero no es un hecho casual. La posibilidad de adentrarse por sus más de dos kilómetros de galerías, a los pies mismo del majestuoso castillo de Peñafiel,es una experiencia que no deja indiferente a nadie, por muy alejado que uno se encuentre de todo lo relacionado con el mundo del vino y su elaboración.
Hay diferentes tipos de tours por las instalaciones. La visita guiada más habitual a esta bodega, famosa también por el espectacular edificio diseñado por el arquitecto Richard Roger, ocupa una hora y media mientras se discurre por el interior de las galerías subterráneas tradicionales al mismo tiempo que los visitantes tienen la oportunidad de acercarse a los procesos de elaboración de sus vinos. El recorrido, que también incluye un acercamiento a las texturas, colores y olores de sus caldos, desemboca -y finaliza- en las modernas instalaciones del diseñador británico. Es, por tanto, también un viaje del pasado a al futuro pasando por el presente.
The fact that Protos' wineries are the most visited in Ribera del Duero is not a mere coincidence. The chance to enter its more than two kilometres of galleries, at the very foothills of the majestic castle of Peñafiel, is an experience that will leave you speechless, no matter how far away you are from the world of wine and its making.
There are different types of guided tours to the facilities. The most common visit to this winery, also famous for the spectacular building designed by the architect Richard Roger, takes an hour and a half while you go through the traditional underground galleries while visitors have the opportunity to get closer to the processes of making their wines. The route, which also includes an introduction to the textures, colours and smells of its wines, leads to - and culminates in - the modern installations of the British designer. It is, therefore, also a journey from the past to the future through the present.
Estareis de acuerdo conmigo en que hacer enoturismo es la excusa perfecta para una escapada de fin de semana. Y si lo prácticas en la Ribera del Duero ya no es excusa, se convierte en devoción.
Creedme, no hace falta ser un auténtico experto en vino para disfrutar de ellos y yo soy la prueba viviente de esta afirmación. Una vez que estéis por aquí os dareis cuenta que este mundillo enoturístico es mucho más que saber distinguir aromas, matices y sabores. Son paisajes, silencios, experiencias, momentos inolvidables, gastronomía...todo ello rodeados de campos inmensos de viñedos y siempre con una copa de Ribera del Duero en la mano, por supuesto.
You'll agree with me that wine-tourism is the perfect excuse for a weekend getaway. And if you do it on the Ribera del Duero, it's no longer an excuse, it becomes a worship.
Believe me, you don't have to be a real wine expert to enjoy them and I am the living proof of this statement. Once you are here, you will realize that this enotourism world is much more than knowing how to recognize aromas, nuances and flavours. They are landscapes, silences, experiences, unforgettable moments, gastronomy... all of them surrounded by immense fields of vineyards and always with a glass of Ribera del Duero's wine in your hand, of course.
