Qué ganas tenía de ver esta maravillosa opera rock. Hace 45 años Jesus Christ Superstar se estrenaba en Broadway y ahora vuelve con más fuerza que nunca a los escenarios de las principales teatros del mundo. La obra que se representa estos días en Madrid no es una adaptación, es la versión original tal cual se creó, en inglés con subtítulos en español, con un elenco de nueve actores como artistas principales y 24 personas en escena, entre acróbatas y cuerpo de baile.
La trama de esta ópera rock está inspirada en la historia bíblica, pero tiene marcadas diferencias con la interpretación cristiana. «Jesus Christ Superstar» es una adaptación libre de los Evangelios, su argumento se centra en los últimos siete días de la vida de Jesús de Nazaret, comienza con los preparativos de su llegada a Jerusalén y finaliza con la crucifixión.
Es un auténtico lujo para los amantes de la opera rock.
How excited I was to see this wonderful rock opera. 45 years ago Jesus Christ Superstar was premiered on Broadway and now it returns with more strength than ever to the stages of the main theaters of the world. The play that is representing on these days in Madrid is not an adaptation, it is the original version as it was created, in English with subtitles in Spanish, with a cast of nine actors as main artists and 24 people on stage, among acrobats and dancers.
The plot of this rock opera is inspired by the biblical story, but it has marked differences with the Christian interpretation. «Jesus Christ Superstar» is a free adaptation of the Gospels, its argument focuses on the last seven days of Jesus’s life. It begins with the preparations for his arrival in Jerusalem and ends with the crucifixion.
It is a real luxury for lovers of rock opera.
Tras verlo aquí en Madrid entendí el porqué de su controversia cuando se estrenó allá por los años 70.; te invita a pensar y ser crítico con todo lo establecido.
Durante todo el tiempo que se estuvo representando en Nueva York , fueron continuas las manifestaciones a la puerta del teatro que tachaban la obra de sacrilegio, falsa o inmoral y es que el Jesús que se nos presenta es alguien inseguro, lleno de dudas con respecto a su muerte. Una persona que se dirige a la cruz sin saber porqué.
La Magdalena sufre enamorada y Judas se convierte en un nuevo antihéroe. En la obra, Judas es mucho más protagonista que el propio Jesus. Él lo entrega a las autoridades pensando que así lo salvaba de su locura y cuando Jesús se da cuenta de que finalmente va a morir culpa a Dios de todo. Es el mismísimo Dios quien ha traicionado a Jesús y a Judas.

To summarize the theme of Jesus Christ Superstar, Jesus was not divine but was a fascinating and magnetic man of good intentions who let things get out of control. Overwhelmed by His own fame, He desired to return to a simpler, more sincere life, but He couldn’t. Of the disciples, only Judas recognized what was happening. He hated what Jesus had become but still loved Him and wanted to help Him. Jesus saw only one way out of His predicament: to die as a martyr; then, perhaps, some of His good teaching might be remembered.
Of course, this is not biblical.Jesus Christ Superstar is more than a popular opera that happens to get some facts wrong. It is an attempt to rewrite history. It makes the traitor Judas Iscariot a victim and reduces the Lord Jesus Christ to a burnt-out celebrity who is in over His head.
Afortunadamente los tiempos han cambiado y la obra se ha convertido en todo un clásico de la opera rock que merece la pena disfrutar. Los amantes de este generó ( entre los que me incluyo) disfrutarán de las guitarras eléctricas, las voces rotas y las letras llenas de mensajes revolucionarios de máxima actualidad.
Otro de los alicientes de este Jesucristo Superstar es el poder ver en directo al reconocido actor Ted Neeley, el mismo que interpretó a Jesus de Nazaret en la película original de Norman Jewison en1973. Ya sé que parece un poco raro el ver a un actor de 74 años interpretar a alguien de 33, pero su presencia en el escenario es francamente notable y su voz todavía tiene potencia para hacer unos altos memorables. Newley lleva haciendo de Jesús muchos más años que el propio Jesucristo. Yo destacaría de él la energía que desprende y su teatralidad.
Fortunately times have changed and the show has become a classic of opera rock that is worth enjoying. The rock lovers ( including me) will enjoy electric guitars, broken voices and lyrics full of revolutionary messages of topicality.
Maybe the main incentive of this version of Jesus Christ Superstar is to see on stage the renowned actor Ted Neeley, the same who played Jesus of Nazareth in the original film by Norman Jewison in 1973. I know it seems a bit strange to see a 74-year-old actor playing someone of 33, but his presence on stage is frankly remarkable and his voice still has the power to make memorable stops. Newley has been playing Jesus many more years than Jesus Christ himself. I would highlight the energy that he gives off and his theatricality.
Es una verdadera lastima que la obra sólo la podamos disfrutar aquí en Madrid hasta el próximo día 13 de mayo. No están previstas más representaciones en nuestro país por lo que, creedme, ha sido todo un honor ver y disfrutar uno de los espectáculos musicales dramáticos más importantes del siglo XX.
Tras más de 45 años de éxito, Jesus Christ Superstar continúa de actualidad conquistando al público de todas las edades.
It is a pity that the show will be playing here in Madrid just until May 13. No more performances are planned in our country so, believe me, it has been an honor to see and enjoy one of the most important dramatic musical shows of the twentieth century.
