Irremediablemente asociamos esta camisa sin cuello a practicantes de Yoga, amantes del New Age y demás estética hippy. Como mucho, nos la imaginamos combinada con bermudas en algún destino vacacional preferiblemente exótico. Sin embargo, este tipo de camisa está viviendo un resurgir en esta última temporada y desmonta todo tipo de mitos. Ahora es posible incluso llevarla a la oficina sin dejarse el componente formal por el camino. Las de lino cobran un nuevo sentido y se acercan más a la estética sofisticada de los viajeros con clase.

Un poco de historia
La camisa de cuello mao, como gran parte de las prendas, tiene una historia interesante detrás, y de hecho no es tan antigua como podemos llegar a pensar. La camisa, caracterizada por un cuello pequeño y discreto, diferente a la de las camisas tradicionales, también es llamada cuello mandarín, otro término que hace alusión a su origen y es una prenda esencial en el armario de todo hombre que quiera verse con estilo.
El cuello mandarín o cuello mao nació como parte del origen de algunas tradiciones de China, y era el cuello que utilizaban los burócratas durante la era Qing, la cual fue establecida en 1636 y duró hasta 1912, cuando llegó la revolución y se implementó la República de China. La camisa no se parecía nada a como la podemos encontrar ahora. Estaba creada una tela suave y brillosa, característica de las tradiciones de ese país, y daba un aspecto más de una prenda exterior e interior.

The mandarin collar or mao collar was born as part of the origin of some traditions in China, and was the collar used by bureaucrats during the Qing era, which was established in 1636 and lasted until 1912, when the revolution came and the Republic of China was implemented. Actualmente sólo sobrevive el cuello de esas prendas mientras que el resto se puede ver como cualquier otra camisa tradicional.
En medio oriente también surgió el cuello Nehru, que es un poco más delgado que el cuello mandarín, y de hecho de los dos modelos suelen estar basados los diseños que podemos encontrar actualmente. La prenda ofrece cierta formalidad como gran parte de las camisas, pero tiene este elemento alternativo al centro que lo hace más llamativo así que es ideal para cualquier atuendo casual.
The mandarin collar can have edges at the top or center and they hardly touch each other leaving an open angle on the collar. Because it is not a folding collar, no ties or bows are used (garments that were only developed for use in the West). Today only the collar of these garments survives while the rest can be seen as any other traditional shirt.
In the Middle East also emerged the Nehru collar, which is a little thinner than the mandarin collar, and in fact the two models are often based on the designs we can find today. The garment offers a certain formality as most of the shirts, but has this alternative element in the center that makes it more striking so it is ideal for any casual outfit.
¿Cómo usar la camisa de cuello mao?
Para usar la camisa de cuello mao sólo hay unas cuántas reglas sencillas. La primera es que debe estar siempre abotonada hasta arriba para permitir que la forma del cuello se vea bien (que es lo que buscamos al usar este tipo de camisas). Esto va principalmente cuando tenemos un atuendo smart casual o algo más formal. Si estamos en verano será inevitable soltarla un poco pero no le vemos necesidad ya que el cuello bajo es bastante fresco.
There are only a few simple rules to wear the mao collar shirt. The first one is that it should always be buttoned all the way to the top to allow the shape of the collar to show well (which is what we are looking for when wearing this type of shirts). This goes mainly when we have a smart casual outfit or something more formal. If we are in summer it will be inevitable to let it loose a little but we don't see the need since the low collar is quite cool.
Por otra parte, es necesario asegurarnos de que la camisa nos queda bien. Basta con meter dos dedos entre el cuello y el de la prenda. Si queda ese espacio, todo bien, si sobra más, necesitamos un cuello más cerrado, de lo contrario perderá el buen aspecto.
Entre lo prohibido está lo obvio: nunca usarla con corbata ni pajarita. No importa qué tan alternativo seas, no se ve bien. Por otra parte, tampoco va acompañada de un traje formal o de esmoquin. Un saco casual es una mejor opción.
La camisa de cuello mandarín por lo general debe ir con atuendos casuales, y principalmente de verano ya que en invierno solemos usar muchas prendas encima y accesorios que harán que se pierda todo el sentido de la prenda (para eso mejor utilizamos una camisa normal). La bufanda es un accesorio que también oculta el cuello y le quita sentido al atuendo.
On the other hand, it is important to make sure that the shirt fits properly. It is enough to put two fingers between the collar and the neck of the garment. If there is enough space, everything is fine, if there is more, we need a tighter collar, otherwise it will lose its good looks.
The obvious is among the no-no's: never wear it with a tie or bow tie. No matter how alternative you are, it doesn't look good. On the other hand, it also doesn't go with a formal suit or tuxedo. A casual jacket is a better choice.
The mandarin collar shirt should generally go with casual outfits, and mainly summer outfits since in winter we usually wear many garments over it and accessories that will make it lose the whole sense of the garment (for that we better use a normal shirt). The scarf is an accessory that also hides the neck and takes away the sense of the outfit.
En realidad puede ir perfecto con cualquier pantalón (nosotros apostaríamos por unos khakis) pero los de vestir pueden ir bien y hasta los jeans. Depende de tu look. En cuanto a los colores sigue las mismas reglas que las camisas tradicionales, así que no hay problema al combinarlas. De igual forma, no son tan diferentes como para evitar piezas de relojería o cadenas, pero siempre es mejor con un sentido de control.
