Hay que ver, lo maravillosas que son las obras de Antonio López y qué difícil es poder disfrutarlas. Nos tenemos que remontar al 93 para poder disfrutar de una exposición suya, la que le dedicó el museo Reina Sofia y que fue vista por más de trescientas mil personas. Por eso encontrar esta gigantesca escultura suya en Coslada, un pueblo del extraradio de Madrid, es un extraño privilegio que podemos apreciar a cualquier hora del día o de la noche porque, bizarramente, se encuentra en el centro de una rotonda.
Y que las obras de Antonio López son extrañas de ver porque el artista produce pocas y las que hay están muy cotizadas. El artista puede tardar años y años en acabar sus trabajos pero, como dice el refrán, “todo lo bueno se hace esperar”.
Esta “Mujer de Coslada" es una escultura de bronce que representa a una mujer desnuda emergiendo de la tierra desde el medio vientre, con una altura de cinco metros y sesenta centímetros y un peso de 3.000 kilos. La idea inicial era realizar una cabeza de mujer, pero Antonio López reconoció en su momento que sobre la marcha le pareció emocionante la idea de prolongar la figura para que surgiera de la tierra desde la mitad del vientre.
La escultura mira hacia el nordeste dando la bienvenida a los primeros rayos del día, y creando en esos momentos del día el efecto emergente buscado por el artista.
How wonderful Antonio Lopez's works are and how complicated to enjoy them. We have to go back to 93 to be able to enjoy an exhibition of his works, the one dedicated to him by the Reina Sofia Museum, which was seen by more than three hundred thousand people. That is why finding this huge sculpture by him in Coslada, a town outside Madrid, is a strange privilege that we can appreciate at any time of the day or night because, bizarrely, it is located in the middle of a traffic circle.
Antonio Lopez's works are odd to see because the artist produces few and such works are highly prized. The artist can take years and years to finish his works but, as the proverb says, "everything good is worth waiting for".
This "Woman of Coslada" is a bronze sculpture representing a naked woman emerging from the earth from the middle of the womb, measuring five meters and sixty centimeters high and weighing 3,000 kilos. The initial idea was to make a woman's head, but Antonio López recognized that as he went along he found exciting the idea of extending the figure so that it would emerge from the earth halfway up the belly.
The sculpture faces northeast, greeting the first rays of the day, and creating the emergent effect sought by the artist in those moments of the day.
Como ha contado el propio artista en diversas ocasiones, la pieza nació como parte de un grupo escultórico que no llegó a terminar y cuyo tema era el pasaje bíblico dedicado a la creación del hombre. En dicho relato esculpido, junto a Adán, aparecía una cabeza femenina (Eva) que, una vez descartado el proyecto original, el artista utilizó para este nuevo encargo.
La modelo elegida para el busto y, más tarde, para el medio cuerpo de la figura total, es una estudiante «desconocida» de la Facultad de Bellas Artes de Madrid a la que llamó por su nombre inicial (F). Al autor le impresionó el carácter de su belleza y le pareció que correspondía con la Eva que él había imaginado. Con F trabajó en cera, a tamaño natural el cuello y la cabeza, mirando hacia arriba, a su creador; la terminé en unas semanas y la vació en yeso.
Su traslado fue una auténtica locura. Debido a sus colosales dimensiones y a su peso descomunal, se trajo a Coslada desde la fundición de Arganda del Rey en la que fue creada. Y pudo llevarse a cabo gracias a un transporte especial que obligó a cortar el tráfico de varias calles, puentes y túneles.
¿A qué es maravillosa? Afortunadamente la tenemos para disfrutarla a todas horas. En Coslada.
As the artist has said several times, the piece was born as part of a sculptural group that was never finished and whose theme was the biblical passage dedicated to the creation of man. In this sculpted story, next to Adam, appeared a female head (Eve) which, once the original project was discarded, the artist used for this new commission.
The model chosen for the bust and, later, for the half body of the total figure, is an "unknown" student of the Fine Arts School of Madrid, who was called by her initial name (F). The author was impressed by the character of her beauty and felt that she matched the Eve he had imagined. With F he worked in wax, life-size neck and head, looking upwards, to its creator; I finished it in a few weeks and cast it in plaster.
Transporting it was a real madness. Due to its colossal dimensions and its enormous weight, it was brought to Coslada from the foundry in Arganda del Rey where it was created. And it could be carried out thanks to a special transport that forced to cut the traffic of several streets, bridges and tunnels.
