Lo primero que os llamará la atención cuando entreis en la tienda de Javier S. Medina es el olor a maderas, a mimbres, esparto, bambú. Es como si estuviéramos en el taller de un artesano de los de antes pero en pleno centro de Madrid.
Javier utiliza todos esos materiales para hacer a mano sus espejos y lo que él mismo denomina “trofeos ecológicos”, cabezas de animales hechas de pleita trenzada, una especie de junco con el que se trabajaba en su Extremadura natal y en el sur de España para hacer, por ejemplo, las persianas de las casas.
Javier empezó a trabajar con este material porque le traía recuerdos de la infancia, de su abuelo haciendo manualmente esas persianas, y de su padre, que era zapatero, y de donde le viene parte de su vena artesana.
Si os pasais por el 28 de la Calle de El Escorial en el barrio de Malasaña allí le encontrareis con su delantal, trabajando cada pieza con mucho mimo y cuidando hasta el último detalle.
The first thing that you will notice when entering the store of Javier S. Medina is the smell of wood, wicker, esparto, bamboo. It is as if we were inside the workshop of a old fashion craftsman but in the heart of Madrid and in present times.
Javier uses all these materials to make his mirrors and what he calls "ecological trophies", heads of animals made of braided plait, a kind of reed with which he worked in his hometown Extremadura and it was used in the south of Spain to make, for example, the blinds of houses.
Javier began to work with this material because it brought back memories of his childhood, his grandfather making these blinds manually, and his father, who was a shoemaker, and where his artisan vein come from.
If you pass by 28’th Street of the Escorial in the district of Malasaña you will find him with his apron, working every piece with much taste and taking care of to the last detail.
Como estáis viendo en las fotos el taller es también una pequeña obra de arte en sí mismo. Era una antigua cochera. Él la transformó en un acogedor taller que evoca a los artesanos de toda la vida. Muchas de las herramientas con las que trabaja ( los punzones, martillos, tijeras, cepillos...) son heredadas de su propia familia o encontradas en mercadillos
Aunque no reniega de las herramientas nuevas, Javier asegura que no hay nada como las antiguas, hechas para durar y con las que trabaja más a gusto. Además, como él mismo dice, le parece que encajan mucho mejor con su filosofía y con la imagen que quiere dar a sus productos.
As you are seeing in the pictures, the workshop is also a small work of art itself. It was an old carport. He transformed it into a cozy workshop that evokes me the artisans of all times. Many of the tools he works with (punches, hammers, scissors, brushes ...) are inherited from his own family or found in markets .
Although he does not deny the new tools, Javier says there is nothing like the old ones, made to last and with which he works more at ease. In addition, as he says, it seems to fit much better with his philosophy and the image he wants to give his products.
Sus trofeos ecológicos y sus espejos han triunfado tanto fuera como dentro de nuestras fronteras, por eso podemos verlos en diversos locales de la capital y también de otras ciudades españolas. Además, Javier hace a diario encargos para Holanda, Portugal o Estados Unidos, entre muchos otros países del mundo.
Entre sus fans y compradores incondicionales está el marido del ex embajador de Estados Unidos, el interiorista Michael Smith, la mismísima Oprah Winfrey y la gran Sarah Jessica Parker de "Sexo en Nueva York” que en su última visita a Madrid visitó su taller y se quedó prendada con su trabajo ( por cierto se llevó una cabeza de toro).
His ecological trophies and mirrors have had a lot of success inside out, so we can see them in various locations in the capital and also in other Spanish cities. In addition, Javier makes daily orders for Holland, Portugal or United States, among many other countries of the world.
Among his buyers and unconditional fans is the husband of the former US ambassador, interior designer Michael Smith, Oprah Winter herself and the great Sarah Jessica Parker of "Sex in The City" who visited his workshop on her last visit to Madrid and was stunned with his work (by the way she took a bull's head).
Se me olvidó deciros que Javier antes de dedicarse a esto tenía un gimnasio en su Badajoz natal e iba a preparase unas oposiciones a bombero. Menos mal que siguió su instinto y decidió dedicarse por completo al trabajo creativo que le había gustado hacer desde pequeño.
Es curioso que en nuestra búsqueda incesante por estar siempre “a la última" nos encontremos con nuestras tradiciones. Gracias Javier por recordarme la importancia de lo auténtico, lo natural, lo hecho a mano y darle el valor que se merece. Gracias también por abrirme un poquito de tu corazón y toda la suerte del mundo.
I forgot to tell you that before the workshop Javier had a gym in his native Badajoz and was going to be a firefighter. Luckily he followed his instinct and decided to devote himself completely to the creative work that he had liked to do since he was a child.
It is funny how in our incessant search for "to the last thing" we find ourselves with our own traditions. Thanks Javier for reminding me of the importance of the authentic, the natural, the handmade and give it the value it deserves. Thanks for being so honest with me and all the luck of the world.
