Vengas a Madrid en coche, en tren o incluso en avión verás que al final de la ciudad emergen como de la nada 4 siluetas altas que llaman mucho la atención. Es el complejo empresarial de las Cuatro Torres que albergan oficinas privadas y un hotel ; actualmente son los 4 rascacielos más altos de España y están entre los 13 más altos de Europa.
En otras palabras es el nuevo “Skyline” de Madrid que, la verdad sea dicha, casi todos los que vivimos en esta ciudad nos es bastante ajeno.
Yo las había visto de lejos cientos de veces desde todas las perspectivas posibles ( en coche, en taxi, en autobús, desde la zona norte, la sur, el este y el oeste) pero nunca había estado allí así que fui a ver lo que me encontraba.
Madrid skyline changed dramatically between 2007 and 2009 as four new skyscrapers were finished, and gave the city a new and modern look. The four office towers are the tallest buildings in Spain, with Torre Bankia reaching highest at 250 meters, and each tower has its own distinctive design.
The towers can clearly be seen from the plane when landing in Madrid, and from far outside the city, but its much more impressive to be standing underneath the soaring structures yourself. Though its not possible to get inside, without working there or booking a hotel room, the site still provides an epic photo-opportunity.
Recorrer el complejo de Cuatro Torres en Madrid como visitante fue como presenciar un espejismo. Puedes ver las Torres por fuera todo lo que quieras mientras los circuitos de seguridad te escudriñan sin cesar, pero basta entrar a cualquiera de estos edificios con una cámara en mano y sin invitación y tendrás a un guardia de seguridad dándote todo tipo de negativas. El hall de entrada es lo más lejos que podrás llegar.
Cualquier rascacielos que se preste en Nueva York, Boston o Chicago cuenta con un mirador espectacular, donde además de cobrarte por subir, ofrecen comida y tienen hasta un gift shop. Estos cuatro edificios tendrían las mejores vistas de Madrid y estoy seguro que cualquier turista pagaría por subir y ver la ciudad desde una perspectiva única. Sin embargo me fue imposible hacerlo.
Visiting the Cuatro Torres complex in Madrid as a visitor was like witnessing a mirage. You can see the Towers outside all you want while the security circuits scrutinize you incessantly, but just try to enter any of these buildings with your a camera and without invitation and you will have a security guard giving you all kinds of negatives. The lobby is as far as you can get.
Any skyscraper in New York, Boston or Chicago has a spectacular lookout, where in addition to charge for the view, offer food and even have a gift shop. These four buildings would have the best views of Madrid and I'm sure any tourist would pay to go and see the city from a unique perspective.
However I was unable to do so.
A primera vista la impresión que este conjunto ofrece es la de estar completamente ajeno a su entorno. El contraste de las barriadas que están a su alrededor con las Cuatro Torres es bastante fuerte y un poco intrigante (en especial si se observa desde al lado este del Paseo de la Castellana). Del lado oeste y con la futura adición del Centro Internacional de Convenciones de Madrid, será ( suponemos) un contexto mucho más coherente.
Con todo, las Torres han logrado darle a Madrid una nueva imagen (aunque algo tímida) y un nuevo símbolo arquitectónico que, poco a poco, comienza a aparecer en series de TV y en anuncios publicitarios.
At first glance the impression that the 4 Towers offers is like being completely alien to its surroundings. The contrast with the neighborhoods around is quite strong and a little intriguing (especially if you look from the east side of the Paseo de la Castellana). On the west side and with the future addition of the Madrid International Convention Center, it will be (we assume) a much more coherent context.
However, the Towers have given to Madrid a new image (although somewhat timid) and a new architectural symbol that, little by little, begins to appear on TV series and in some commercials.
Pues al final me quedé un poco con la miel en los labios; quería disfrutar del autentico “Skyline” de Madrid y lo único que ví fueron las 4 Torres desde el suelo y poco más. Si esperas encontrar algún sitio para tomar algo, descubrir nuevas vistas de la ciudad o simplemente “algo” que haga tu estancia allí un poco más agradable siento decepcionarte.
Con todo merece la pena ir a verlo, hacerte unas fotos y disfrutar del entorno.
At the end I was like the fox watching the geese ; I wanted to enjoy the authentic "Skyline" of Madrid and the only thing I saw were the 4 Towers from the ground and little else. If you expect to find somewhere to have a drink, discover new sights of the city or just "something" that makes your stay there a little more pleasant, I'm sorry to disappoint you.
But anyway, it is worth going to see it, take some photos and enjoy the surroundings.
