Si aún no has visto las imágenes de Erik Johansson, seguro que no te dejan indiferente. Este fotógrafo sueco y experto en retoque probablemente tiene uno de los porfolios más llamativos del momento. Sus surrealistas imágenes crean mundos fantásticos donde lo real se transforma en irreal, o a la inversa.¿Cómo lo hace? Detrás de sus obras hay una imaginación sin límites y un cuidadoso trabajo, tanto a la hora de captar las imágenes como en su posterior edición y postproducción. Aunque a primera vista no lo parezca, todas las fotografías del montaje son de escenarios reales.
I first wrote about Erik Johansson, a Swedish photographer and retoucher, 4 years ago, when he was still a computer engineering student. Even back them, despite lack of professional training in photography, his wildly creative photo manipulations would be a stand-out example of retouching.
Erik’s work has a two-fold effect: on the one hand, it’s completely unbelievable and reality-defying, while on the other hand the high-skilled retouching makes it look almost real. The photographer first develops an idea in his head before he sets out to make the pictures; he even models in some of them himself – yes, that’s the blond guy, distorting his face with his own fist!
En su trabajo no hay nada de imágenes creadas por ordenador, y sí un gran dominio de Photoshop, como se puede ver en el siguiente vídeo “Behind The Scenes” de su obra Landfall. Realizado por el propio Johansson, recoge todos los pasos del proceso creativo de la imagen, desde el surgimiento de la idea hasta a su increíble transformación mediante la reconstrucción y retoque de las fotografías.
Erik says he has been drawing for as long as he can remember – maybe influenced by his painter grandmother – but his first digital camera at the age of 15 opened up a whole new world for the guy: “Being used to drawing it felt quite strange to be done after capturing a photo, it wasn’t the process of creating something in the same way.” He picked up his interest for retouching while studying, and today is a prolific artist, working on both commissions and personal projects. Para Johansson, la fotografía es saber capturar una idea y no un momento. No le falta razón, ya que cualquiera puede hacer fotos en el momento adecuado. Muchos fotógrafos puristas critican la excesiva digitalización de estas imágenes, en su obra hay más retoque que fotografía, más técnica que arte, pero los resultados de sus imágenes son indiscutiblemente buenos. Despite a lack of formal training in photography or studio art—or even classroom instruction in Adobe Photoshop—Erik Johansson has become a master at the art of photo retouching in only a few years. His impossible landscapes seem alternately humorous and menacing, trapping their inhabitants in vexing circumstances beyond their control as if they’re witnessing a break in the space-time continuum.
