Con más de veinte siglos de historia, Lisboa presume de ser una de las pocas capitales europeas que aún conserva todo el encanto de otras épocas,, pero ¿por cuanto tiempo más? He estado en Lisboa muchísimas veces y os confieso que esta vez me ha costado reconocerla. Las riadas de turistas se cuentan por miles y dónde antes se escuchaban fados y se comía buen pescado hoy abundan “Irish Pubs” y sitios de cocina internacional.
Con todo, yo os voy a intentar enseñar la Lisboa que vi por primera vez hace más de 20 años. La verdad es que no me ha sido difícil, ha bastado con rascar un poquito y ahí estaba. Tan bella como siempre.
With more than twenty centuries of history, Lisbon boasts of being one of the few European capitals that still retains all the charm of other times, but for how much longer? I have been to Lisbon many times and I confess that this last time was difficult for me to recognize it. The floods of tourists are counted by thousands and where not so long ago fados could be hard and good fish was eaten today they are being replace by Irish Pubs and international cuisine.
All in all, I am going to try to show you the Lisbon I saw for the first time more than 20 years ago. The truth is that it wasn’t very difficult for me to find it, just scratching a little and there it was. Beautiful as always.
Un buen síntoma es que la rúa Garrett sigue absolutamente igual. Los turistas siguen haciendo cola para retratarse sobre las rodillas de Pessoa en el café A Brasileira, las tiendecitas y las casas da sorte abren sus puertas sin complejos entre Zaras, Mangos y otras grandes franquicias de moda europea, y los músicos callejeros animan la tarde que cae.
De repente pasa el tranvía y aparece, definitivamente, la ciudad de Lisboa. La de los claveles y buganvillas, la del fuerte olor a sardinas y las calles empedradas, la de la ropa tendida en los balcones de casas de fachadas amarillas, rosas, blancas o azul pastel. La Lisboa más clásica y decadente, la que parece estar a punto siempre para el desguace, la que nunca se olvida y a mi me enamora.
A good sign is that Garrett street is absolutely the same. Tourists are still queuing to sit on Pessoa's knees at the A Brasileira café, the little shops and the soda houses open their doors without complexes between Zaras, Mangos and other big European fashion franchises, and the street musicians cheer up the afternoon that falls off.
Suddenly the tram passes and the city of Lisbon appears in front of me. The city full of carnations and bougainvillea, the strong scent of sardines and the cobbled streets, the city of the clothes hanging on the balconies of houses with yellow, pink, white or pastel blue facades. The most classic and decadent Lisbon, the one that seems always ready for the scrapping, the city that you never forget and I fall in love with it.
Y si os gustan los colores Lisboa os volverá locos. Las calles están repletas de colorido gracias a los miles de azulejos que visten las fachadas de los edificios y lo magnífico es que resulta imposible encontrar dos iguales. La erosión y la humedad lisboeta puede que deterioren la pintura de los edificios pero los azulejos no, ellos sobreviven. Los patrones geométricos son casi hipnóticos y suben por las paredes de manera infinita.
Cada edificio tiene el suyo propio pero en casi todos se aprecian los tonos azules y amarillos. Sin duda Lisboa nos recuerda que el color bien empleado llena de vida cualquier espacio, iluminándolo y dándole una personalidad propia.
The buildings are something else and by something else I mean all painted all sorts of colours or covered in unique tiles. While tiles in art are common the world over, in Lisbon they became part of the architecture of the buildings themselves.
They first became popular in the 1500s, before their popularity waned but was revived again in the 1950s. On a stroll around Lisbon today it’s impossible the miss he beautifully tiled buildings, and the huge amount of street art that’s all over the city. A must-do in Lisbon is to simply walk around, and look up! (Just be careful of the trams and other people when you do it!)
En fin, nunca lo había pensado. O quizás sí. Pero tengo la impresión de que la ciudad más romántica del mundo es Lisboa. Siempre fiel a sí misma, dulce, melancólica y tan de verdad, que no se siente uno dentro de un decorado repetido. Lisboa es única, desde Baixa hasta el Barrio Alto, desde Chiado hasta la Alfama, parando antes en Belém para degustar unos deliciosos pasteles y seguir la marcha. Será por su aceras desgastadas, el tranvía 28 escondiéndose detrás de la catedral o todas y cada una de las noches del miradouro de Santa Luzia donde a lo lejos se escucha un fado desgarrador.

Oh well, I had never thought about it before. Or maybe I had but I have the impression that the most romantic city in the world is Lisbon. Always honest to itself, sweet, melancholy and so real that you do not feel like in a repeated set. Lisbon is unique, from Baixa to Bairro Alto, from Chiado to Alfama, stopping before in Belém to taste some delicious cakes and follow the march
Pastel, pretty and (literally) tiled in rustic, worn charm, this hilly and enchanting city perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean has it all. Built on seven hills, Lisbon stretches along the river Tejo. Downtown, you’ll find narrow and winding storybook alleyways, impressive Gothic cathedrals and so much prettiness, everywhere you look. Lisbon boasts a warm, Mediterranean climate and a thriving foodie culture, it has undoubtedly experienced a revival in recent years – and the world is taking notice!
So, Thanks Lisbon to remind me how beautiful life can be.
