La Central Montemartini es un ejemplo magnífico de reconversión arqueológica de un edificio industrial en sede de museo. La que fue la primera planta de producción de energía eléctrica – dedicada a Giovanni Montemartini – es en la actualidad el segundo polo expositivo de los Museos Capitolinos y en él se albergan buena parte de las esculturas de la antigüedad clásica halladas en el curso de las numerosas excavaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en Roma entre finales del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del siglo XX.
The idea of re-purposing outmoded structures for cultural purposes is not a new one, but the marriage of industrial architecture and classical archaeology of the Centrale Montemartini Museum in Rome achieves a particular alchemy that is worth seeking out. Visiting the museum provides, as the curators so eloquently put it, an “Olympian calm,” a state of mind that is woefully missing at more well-known sites in the Eternal City. Here, classical sculptures co-exist beautifully with the vestiges of a thermoelectric plant, each stronger for the pairing, their artistry heightened by the visual dichotomy.
La historia del nuevo centro expositivo de los Musei Capitolini en la antigua Central Termoeléctrica Giovanni Montemartini, ejemplo fantástico de arqueología industrial reconvertido en museo, se inicia en 1997 con el traslado de centenares de esculturas debido al cierre por reestructuración de amplios espacios del complejo capitolino.
Para vaciar los espacios del Museo del Palazzo dei Conservatori, Museo Nuovo e Braccio Nuovo y evitar que el público se viera privado de estas obras, en 1997, se inauguró la exposición “Máquinas y dioses” en las salas rehabilitadas de la primera central eléctrica pública romana para acercar dos mundos diametralmente opuestos: la arqueología clásica y la industrial.
Located just outside the Aurelian walls and close to the Tiber, the Art Nouveau building and its preserved steam turbines and diesel engines are worthy of the trip on their own merit. Named for the engineer that designed the facility, the Centrale Montemartini was constructed on land purchased from a religious order and inaugurated in 1912. Fed from coal brought by railcar, it included engines similar in size and power to those in ocean liners plying the seas then and was Rome’s principal energy supply. Interestingly, ash generated by the plant was used as fertilizer for public gardens all over Rome.
Con un sugerente juego de contrastes, junto a las antiguas máquinas de la central se exponían por primera vez obras maestras de la escultura antigua y valiosos hallazgos arqueológicos descubiertos a finales del siglo XIX y en la década de 1930, con reconstrucciones de grandes complejos monumentales y la ilustración del desarrollo de la ciudad antigua de la época republicana hasta finales del periodo imperial. La adaptación de la central para convertirla en museo, la restauración de las máquinas y la sección didáctica del sector arqueoindustrial han corrido a cargo de Acea.
The plant, which was spared from bombing in World War II, became obsolete in in the late 1950s and was abandoned by the mid-1980s. Not unlike MoMA using temporary space in Long Island City in 2002 during its expansion, the Centrale Montemartini was first used for a special exhibition in 1997 entitled The Machines and the Gods, in which sculptures from the Capitoline Museums were relocated while restoration work proceeded on the Campidoglio galleries. The response to the show and the space was overwhelming, and the plant soon became part of the municipal museum system.
El espléndido espacio museístico, al principio concebido como temporal, cuando una parte de las esculturas fue devuelta al Capitolio en 2005 tras concluir las obras, se convirtió en sede permanente de las colecciones de más reciente adquisición de los Musei Capitolini. En los nuevos espacios se continúa experimentando nuevas soluciones expositivas buscando un acercamiento científico a los hallazgos arqueológicos. El acercamiento de obras procedentes de un mismo contexto permite volver a conectar el museo con el antiguo tejido urbano.
The collection of sculpture is representative of the spoils from several excavation campaigns from the late 19th century and the 1930s and includes statuary from tombs, residential villas, and temples, as well as beautiful mosaics from a garden on the Esquiline, one of Rome’s seven fabled hills. It may not have the crown jewels of imperial era sculpture, but its collection is varied and rich, and yours to enjoy at your leisure, with no lines or time limits.
El propio museo forma parte de un ambicioso proyecto de recalificación de la zona Ostiense Marconi que prevé convertir en polo cultural el área más antigua de industrialización de Roma. Además de la Central eléctrica Montemartini, el proyecto abarca el Mattatoio, el Gazometro, estructuras portuarias, la antigua Mira Lanza e los antiguos Mercados Generales y prevé concluir la construcción de nuevos espacios para la Universidad Roma Tre y la realización de la Ciudad de las Ciencias.
The building is located in Ostiense, in the southern quadrant of Rome. This mixed use neighborhood is grittier than Testaccio to the north and in the midst of incremental changes as it sheds its industrial past with new cultural, educational and commercial uses. Across Via Ostiense from Montemartini is a remaking of the defunct Mercati Generali designed by Rem Koolhaas and OMA. While signs of construction are evident, recent visits indicate no active work on the site. Further east is the very walkable garden city of Garbatella built in the early 1930s and reminiscent of American models such as Forest Hills Gardens in Queens.
