Durante el pasado mundial de fútbol de Brasil en 2014 el fotógrafo y periodista Renato Stockler hizo uno de esos experimentos que a mí me fascinan: coger una cámara y hacer fotografías aéreas en este caso a los “otros” campos de fútbol donde no jugaba ninguna selección nacional pero que eran tan hermosos o más que los oficiales. El resultado está en un hermoso libro llamado Terrao de Cima ( La Tierra desde Arriba) donde se demuestra el poder pacificador del fútbol.
These football grounds on the outskirts of São Paulo have been photographed by Renato Stockler, who hung out of a helicopter for his series: Terrão de Cima (Ground from Above). Never mind jumpers, some of these pitches have actual goalpoasts – they are a mixture of amateur club grounds and public spaces that have been appropriated with the addition of some white paint or a bit of chalk. Needless to say, most of them are under threat from property developers as the huge Brazilian economy continues to power on, but you’d imagine the football-mad citizens of the favelas putting up one hell of a fight before they let the bulldozers anywhere near them.
Terrão de Cima es una especie de carta de amor a los accidentados campos del país natal de Stockler que están desapareciendo rápidamente debido a la especulación del terreno. La fotografía aérea es el medio perfecto para esta tarea puesto que descubre las increíbles variaciones de color, formas y texturas de los campos de fútbol locales, al tiempo que captura a los jugadores como una sola unidad, una cultura, en lugar de solo un puñado de gente.
A terrao is an oasis in the urban landscape. The reddish tone of a soccer field turns into a stage of the resistance of popular soccer. Some of them have their own football clubs, while others are public spots. Some of them are mainly dirt, while others are made of sand, or even rests of weathered grass. But they are a breath for the hard daily life of those who lives in the city of Sao Paulo outskirts. These fields show the urgency for public and communal places to practice sports and to improve community living, a portrait of those who fights for leisure and a better life in a city as Sao Paulo.
Estos campos muestran la necesidad de los habitantes de estos suburbios de utilizar lugares públicos y comunales para practicar deportes y para mejorar la vida en comunidad. Es un retrato de los que luchan por el ocio y una vida mejor en una ciudad como Sao Paulo. El contraste entre el aspecto grisáceo de las casas y el suelo rojizo de Brasil es realmente espectacular; una forma de llamar la atención sobre la deshumanización de las ciudades.
These fields are a solid basis of soccer’s spirit in Brasil, being colored and powerful in face of the greyish scenario of the periferia houses. It’s not hard to find friends, relatives, adults and children cheering together for their local teams. Even in face of social and political difficulties, a terrao show us the real soccer, far away from a society mediated by powerful media groups. The rawness of a terrao can’t be fitted as a media spectacle.
