Esta es la cuestión que cada verano nos viene a la cabeza. Y es que la depilación masculina divide a los hombres en dos grupos; los que no quieren renunciar a su genética y presumen de pelo como dice el refrán (el hombre como el oso, cuanto más peludo más hermoso); y los que prefieren lucir su piel fina y suave, libre de pelos.
Lo paradójico de la actual moda es que mientras las caras se cubren con barbas, en los cuerpos se impone una depilación que llega a su máximo esplendor con la llegada del verano.
Pasado de moda el tipo metrosexual, se impone el trimming o podado, es decir no se lleva ni el exceso ni la escasez de vello. Además, la depilación masculina tiene que ser moderada según la edad: la depilación no favorece igual a un joven atlético que a un hombre de mediana edad con michelines.
A continuación, te muestro cuáles son las formas de depilación y las ventajas e inconvenientes que cada uno de ellos presenta.

If you have, you’re not alone. In fact, according to a survey by Braun, 62 per cent of men now manscape regularly, with those that do saying it makes them feel cleaner, sexier and also enhances the appearance of their muscles.
What’s more, a third of blokes also reckon it makes them more popular with the opposite sex. The question is: do you wax, shave or laser? Undecided?
Here are the pros and cons of some of the most popular body hair removal methods, along with a few tips to ensure you’re successful in getting the smoothest results possible.
Cera
Hay tres tipos de cera que se adaptan a cada tipo de piel: caliente, fría y tibia. Si te atreves con la cera, la primera vez es recomendable que te recortes un poco el vello. Es muy importante que sigas las instrucciones. Si por el contrario, prefieres ir a lo seguro y tienes miedo a que se te irrite la piel, puedes acudir la primera vez a un centro estético para que un especialista lo haga por ti.
La ventaja es que al arrancar el vello desde la raíz, éste tarda entre 2 y 3 semanas en volver a salir. El inconveniente es que es una técnica dolorosa.
Waxing
The pros.The main advantage of waxing is its long-lasting results. Take to ripping the hairs out and you’ll be fuzz-free for up to six weeks. And since the hair is removed at the root, it’ll grow back with fine, rather than blunt, ends so it’s less likely to itch.
Though best performed by a professional, if feeling brave there are now plenty of options on the market that will allow you to wax from the (dis)comfort of your own home, too.
The cons. Familiar with the expression ‘no pain, no gain’? It may as well have been invented for waxing. There are worse pains (getting kicked in the balls or your football team being relegated, for example) but make no mistake: this is still equally eye-watering stuff.
The pain is fleeting, mind, and it is possible to get used to it after a while. Sort of.
Maquinilla eléctrica
Es una forma de depilación sencilla y que puede durar hasta 3 semanas ya que extrae el vello desde la raíz. La forma correcta de pasar la maquinilla es haciéndolo en sentido contrario al crecimiento del pelo. Existe una gran variedad de máquinas así que elige el aparato que mejor se adapte a ti, y ten en cuenta si tienes la piel sensible o no.
La ventaja es que es sencillo, rápido y que puede durar varias semanas. La desventaja es que los pelos se pueden enquistar bajo la piel y puede ser un poco dolorosa.
Electric razors
The pros. Electric razors tend to shave hair away faster than manual razors. Because they roll up the skin, forcing hairs up before cutting them, men don’t need to go over the same area as many times.
Shaving with an electric razor could reduce nicks, cuts and ingrown hairs.
The cons: Electric razors do not shave as closely as manual razors, so you may not get a super-smooth finish and you may have to shave more frequently if you have normal-to-heavy facial hair.
Even thou this type of shaving is considered “safer” than manual shaving, it can still be painful and lead to irritation.
Cuchilla
Tienes que considerar que no es lo mismo afeitar el rostro que el pecho, por lo que los movimientos deben ser diferentes. Aplica una crema hidratante en la zona depilada para calmar la piel.
La ventaja es que es un método rápido, económico e indoloro y la desventaja es que al no arrancar el pelo desde la raíz, el vello se vuelve más duro y crece al de un par de días. Además, el 62% de los hombres españoles ha sufrido heridas rasurándose el cuerpo y siente picor cuando el pelo empieza a crecer.
Shaving
The pros. The simplest of all the hair removal methods, all that’s needed is a razor, some shaving cream and a steady hand.The reason shaving is one of the most popular choices is that it doesn’t require a great deal of skill. Essentially, if you can shave your chin, you can shave your chest, too.
The cons. The odd nick and cut aside (bear in mind you’ll have to navigate nipples), the biggest drawback of shaving is itchy regrowth and the risk of developing unsightly and painful ingrown hairs.Because you’ll be slicing the hairs off at the surface of the skin, within days you’ll also be left with chest, stomach or shoulder stubble.
Crema depilatoria
Las cremas depilatorias son muy fáciles de aplicar: hay que extenderla uniformemente por el área que se quiera depilar, esperar unos minutos (los que indiquen en las instrucciones) y retirarla con una espátula. Es importante aclarar con abundante agua después, para eliminar todo rastro de crema.
Las ventajas son que éstas son muy fáciles de aplicar, son económicas, es un método indoloro y el proceso se hace rápido. La desventaja es que el pelo puede salir duro, así como pueden aparecer granitos. El olor desagradable es otro inconveniente.
Depilatory creams
The pros. The beauty of depilatory or ‘hair removal’ creams like Veet For Men Hair Removal Cream, Nad’s For Men and Nair Men is that they’re so easy to use. Simply apply, leave for a few minutes and then wash off – along with the unwanted hair, which is weakened at root level by the chemicals in the cream and falls away.
They’re particularly useful for areas like the shoulders that can be hard to reach with a razor. They’re also good for chests, armpits and legs, too.
The cons. The results aren’t as long-lasting as with waxing (hair will be poking through before a week is out) and some men are sensitive to the chemicals in the cream, especially if they’re left on for too long.
As with many forms of hair removal, creams can also leave skin spotty sometimes, so correct aftercare is crucial.
Láser
La luz que se aplica sobre la piel destruye el folículo, de manera que, el pelo que crece se va haciendo cada vez más fino y débil hasta que desaparece. Es una técnica permanente y de las más solicitadas.
Las mejores zonas a tratar con este método son las ingles, axilas, piernas y antebrazos (áreas en donde las hormonas no influyen). En el resto de las zonas (región lumbar, espalda, tórax, cuello y rostro) es un poco más difícil; sin embargo, se pueden obtener muy buenos resultados si se repasa cada seis meses.
Las ventajas de este método son claras ya que proporcionan el máximo tiempo sin vello. Inconvenientes: hay que tener mucha paciencia y dinero, ya que es algo caro. Y por otra parte, hay que tener especial cuidado si se tiene la piel muy sensible, ya que podría producir quemaduras y graves problemas.
Hair Laser removal
The pros. Laser hair removal offers one of the longest-lasting solutions to unwanted hair. Though unfortunately, it cannot always be guaranteed the hairs will be gone for good.
This method works by zapping the cells that make the hair, and can be used to thin body hair as well as remove it. It’s especially good for the back, shoulders, neck or buttocks.
The cons. This treatment is often expensive if you opt to have it done by a professional. It also stings slightly and can be time-consuming, because in order for the process to work, hair has to be in its growth cycle. This means it takes several separate treatments, over a period of months.
What’s more, for the laser to work properly, it requires pale skin and dark hair with plenty of melanin for the laser to hone in on. This means most laser-based apparatus won’t work on grey, red or blonde hair.
