Cuando entras al barrio de Molenbeek, al otro lado del canal en Bruselas, lo primero que vas a ver es la fachada de este edificio con un velero pintado que lucha por mantenerse a flote en medio de aguas turbulentas. Quizás sea la metáfora de un barrio que lucha por quitarse el estigma de “zona deprimida” y que navega con dificultades pero, eso sí, siempre a flote. En los últimos meses se están instalando en la zona algunos comercios y profesionales independientes que aprovechan los bajos precios de los alquileres en la zona para poner sus oficinas o locales; una especie de aperturismo que ha venido con la inauguración de algunos hoteles y un museo de Arte Moderno justo en los límites del barrio. Es sólo un comienzo de todo lo bueno que, esperemos, vendrá.
When you enter to Molenbeek's neighborhood, the other side of the Brussels channel, the first thing that you are going to see is the front of this building with a painted sailboat that looks it is fighting to be kept afloat in the middle of turbulent waters. Probably it is the metaphor of a neighborhood that fights to take from it the stigma of " troubled zone " and that sails with difficulties but always afloat. During the last months some trades and independent professionals are establishing themselves in the area trying to take advantage of the low rent prices. That kind of policy of opening-up has come with the opening of some hotels and a museum of Modern Art just in the limits of the neighborhood. I hope this is only the beginning of everything good that will come.
Aunque no os interese el mundo de las telas y los textiles tenéis que entrar en una tienda que se llama “Le Tissus du Chien Vert” ( Las Telas del Perro Verde). Es un impresionante almacén de dos plantas con todo tipo de telas procedentes de cualquier rincón del planeta. La decoración del lugar dista mucho de la típica tienda de retales; os vais a encontrar con estatuas renacentistas, maquetas enormes de aviones e incluso barcas llenas de magníficas telas con todo tipo de texturas y colores. Hasta aquí vienen muchos profesionales de la industria de la moda y la decoración para buscar inspiración en sus colecciones

Les tissus du Chien Vert is a true Brussels institution. In a setting with maritime associations which makes it well worth the trip, this rather unusual, huge shop has for the last 30 years offered a wide choice of fabrics and various clothes-making and interior design accessories. There is also a haberdashery section with all the sewing equipment you need. Finally, you can find fabric remnants at the ‘Puces du chien.
“Les Tissus du Chien Vert” has been and still is the brand by excellence for private people and professionals when it comes to decoration, furniture fabric and the world of production and performance.In 1986, founder Guy François created the “Chien Vert” in a modest warehouse next to the canal in Brussels.
A pocos metros de Les Tissus du Chien Vert se encuentra el MIMA, el Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art. El centro ocupa un lugar icónico en Molenbeek ya que está emplazado en la antigua fábrica de cerveza Bellevue enfrente del canal. Esta zona es una de las más multiculturales de la capital belga, así que un museo de estas características le va como anillo al dedo al barrio. Se trata de un espacio perfecto para el arte más actual y urbano. Es como si hubieran arrancado una pared o una performance de la calle y las hubieran convertido en museo. De hecho, el objetivo del MIMA es convertirse en la sala de exposiciones definitiva del arte contemporáneo y explorar la historia de la cultura 2.0 para hacerla llegar a un público más amplio.
The MIMA is located on the remarkable site of the former brewery Belle-Vue beside the canal in the center of Brussels. The MIMA is a new museum with an international vocation that advances contemporary, accessible and viral creations such as Street Art. The MIMA presents temporary exhibitions, encounters, projections, concerts, performances as well as a permanent collection. It also houses an art shop, a restaurant and two magnificent panoramic viewing points over the canal and Brussels in a magnificent building covering four different floors.
Como veis las obras de arte que allí se exhiben son la combinación de diferentes estilos y toman sus influencias de muchas “sub culturas” como la música (punk-rock, electro, hip hop, folk…), la comunicación (artes gráficas, ilustración, diseño…), los deportes (skate, surf, deportes extremos…), las artes populares (cine, arte plástico, cómics, tatuajes, diseño de moda) y por supuesto el arte urbano (graffiti, obras de arte callejeras). Todo ello agitado y a veces mezclado.
It is a museum of visual arts for the general public. It is determined to make a contribution to this empathetic, iconoclastic, collaborative, participatory and transversal cultural impetus. Así que ya sabeis, la próxima vez que vayáis a la capital belga no os quedeis sólo en el centro o en las zonas más turísticas de la ciudad; tenéis que ir a ver barrios como este de Molenbeek para derribar mitos y, de paso ,contribuir a que estas áreas salgan de una vez por todas de la catalogación de “zona conflictiva”.
So you know, next time you go to the Belgian capital do not visit only the city center or the most tourist parts of the city; you have to be going to see neighborhoods as this one of Molenbeek to help to knock down myths and contribute that these areas go out once and for all of the cataloguing of " troubled zone ".
