Estamos acostumbrados a ver bustos o monumentos en nuestras calles de hombres y mujeres importantes de nuestra historia. Pensadores, políticos, militares, personajes famosos de toda índole adornan nuestras ciudades recordándonos lo importante que han sido para nuestras vidas, pero nadie (al menos hasta el día de hoy) se había acordado de hacerle un monumento al mejor amigo del ser humano: el perro.
Y digo hasta hoy porque Paco, el que fuera el perro más famoso del Madrid del siglo XIX tiene, por fin, estatua en pleno corazón del Barrio de las Letras, en la calle Huertas, donde él anduvo y fue protagonista de múltiples crónicas periodísticas de la época.
La escultura, de bronce fundido, ha sido realizada por el escultor Rodrigo Romero y se encuentra en el número 71 de Huertas. Las asociaciones Nuevo Rastro de Madrid y de Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras son los artífices de la iniciativa para realizar esta estatua.
Hasta allí me fui a pasear con mi Sara y al ver la pequeña estatua me emocioné muchísimo por todo lo que significa para los que amamos a los perros.

We are used to seeing many busts or monuments in our streets representing important men and women of our history. Thinkers, politicians, military men, famous people of all kinds adorn our cities reminding us how important they have been for our lives, but nobody (at least until today) had remembered to make a monument to the best friend of the human being: dogs.
I say until today because, at last, the most famous dog in the XIX century Madrid (Paco) now has a statue in the heart of the Barrio de las Letras, in Huertas street, where he used to walk and where he was the subject of many journalistic chronicles of the time.
The sculpture, of cast bronze, was made by the sculptor Rodrigo Romero and is located at number 71 Huertas. The associations Nuevo Rastro de Madrid and Comerciantes del Barrio de las Letras are the architects of the initiative to make this statue.

La historia del perro Paco es digna de contar. Se hizo famoso por visitar cada tarde el Café de Fornos, donde se reunían ilustres escritores de la época como Azorín, Manuel Machado o Pío Baroja. Allí coincidió también con Gonzalo de Saavedra y Cueto, marqués de Bogaraya, que fue quién le puso el nombre y que solía darle comida. El perro también fue un acompañante habitual de varios miembros de la nobleza madrileña. Además, acudía habitualmente al Hipódromo y a la Plaza de Toros, donde se hizo famoso por bajar al ruedo y hacer juegos con los toros y toreros. Era un perrito muy querido en todo Madrid. Sin embargo, el 21 de junio de 1882, el novillero Pepe el de los Galápagos acabó con su vida de una estocada porque Paco le hizo caer del caballo durante una novillada.
The story of Paco the dog is a long one to tell. He became famous for visiting every afternoon the Café de Fornos, where illustrious writers of the time such as Azorín, Manuel Machado or Pío Baroja used to meet. There he also met Gonzalo de Saavedra y Cueto, Marquis of Bogaraya, who gave him his name and who used to feed him. The dog was also a regular companion of several members of the Madrid nobility. Desde ese momento Paco se convirtió en un héroe para la ciudad. Después de su fallecimiento, fue disecado y expuesto durante un tiempo en el café de la calle Alcalá por el que siempre merodeaba y al que tanto le gustaba entrar. Su despedida fue multitudinaria, aunque existen diferentes versiones sobre el paradero de su cuerpo: algunos lo ubican en el monte de El Pardo y otros en el Retiro. Físicamente se desconoce dónde yace, pero desde hoy los madrileños pueden venerar su estatua como símbolo de un recuerdo vivo en la calle Huertas.

From that moment on Paco became a hero for this city. After his death, he was stuffed and exhibited for some time in the café on Alcalá Street, which he always used to hang around and which he liked to enter. His farewell was multitudinous, although there are different versions about the whereabouts of his body: some place it in the mountain of El Pardo and others in the Retiro. Physically it is unknown where he lies, but from today the people of Madrid can venerate his statue as a symbol of a living memory in Huertas Street.
