Cómo pasa el tiempo. Hacía justo 10 años que no pisaba Sevilla. La última vez que estuve aquí fue por la muerte de mi madre y, os reconozco, no guardaba buenos recuerdos de esta ciudad. Por eso sentía la necesidad de volver, empezar el proceso de reconciliación, buscar nuevos recuerdos que me hagan olvidar el pasado y, creo, que lo he conseguido.
Después de 10 años he visto una Sevilla distinta pero con su misma alma de siempre. Hay muchísimos más turistas ( tantos que es casi imposible andar por las calles del centro) más bicicletas, más tiendas de diseño, más bares, más restaurantes “a la última”; en definitiva más de todo. Pero tras ver a un grupo de costaleros en la calle ensayar los pasos de su próxima Semana Santa me di cuenta de que, en realidad, la esencia de la ciudad era la misma y eso me gustaba.
¿Y qué es lo que más me ha llamado la atención? Pues esta obra en forma de seta en pleno centro sevillano. Por lo que pude comprobar, a muchos les horroriza ver este enorme monumento de madera en la ciudad pero a mí me pareció fantástico. Una de esas maravillosas sorpresas que te dejan boquiabierto.
Así es Sevilla.
I know time flies. Last time I´ve been in Seville was 10 years ago when my mother passed away and because of what happened here I did not have good memories of this city. That is why I felt the need to return and begin the reconciliation process in order to look for new memories that make me forget the past. Oh well, I think, I did it.
After 10 years I have seen a different Seville but with the same soul as always. There are many more tourists (so many that it is almost impossible to walk around downtown) more bicycles, more designer shops, more bars, more restaurants “a la carte”, more of everything. But after seeing a group of float bearers on the street rehearsing the coming Eastern Processions I realized that the essence of the city was the same as always and I liked it.
And what I enjoyed most? Well, this monument you are seeing below like a big mushroom in the heart of Seville. From what I could see, many people are horrified to see this huge wooden monument in the city but I thought it was fantastic. One of those wonderful surprises that leave you speechless.
That the way Seville is.
Las setas de Sevilla son una de las principales atracciones de la ciudad. Es uno de los monumentos más visitados y según encuestas recientes realizadas por el Consorcio de Turismo de Sevilla, a los turistas le despiertan más interés visitar este espacio que la Catedral de Sevilla. Símbolo de la renovación arquitectónica de Sevilla y de la innovación y tecnología, las setas son la estructura de madera más grande del mundo y están ubicadas en la zona norte del casco antiguo de Sevilla, en la antigua plaza de la Encarnación. Es obra del arquitecto alemán Jürgen Mayer que tenía el cometido de transformar esta deteriorada parte del Casco Histórica de la ciudad en una zona de vanguardia que combinara cultura, turismo, comercio y ocio.
El resultado es, sin duda, un espacio para el deleite de los sentidos. Podemos oír el habla burbujeante de la ciudad, oler y degustar el encanto de la gastronomía andaluza, casi tocar el cielo de Sevilla y, sobre todo, ver. Ver, mirar y disfrutar de la imagen de una Sevilla inusual, una Sevilla de las alturas, desde el Casco Histórico, atravesando la ciudad, hasta llegar al horizonte del limítrofe Aljarafe sevillano.
Since opening in 2011, the opinion-dividing Metropol Parasol, known locally as Las Setas (The Mushrooms), has become something of a city icon. Designed as a giant sunshade by German architect Jürgen Mayer H, it's said to be the world's largest wooden structure; it's certainly a formidable sight with its 30m-high mushroom-like pillars and undulating honeycombed roof. Lifts run up from the basement to the top, where you can enjoy killer city views from a winding walkway and cafe.
The building, six years in the making, covers a former dead zone in Seville’s central district once filled with an ugly car park. Roman ruins discovered during its construction have been cleverly incorporated into its foundations and are now on show at the Museo Antiquarium in the basement below the plaza. The structure also houses the local neighbourhood food market; several cafes and tapas bars; and an open-air event space, also popular with skateboarders who use the base of the mushrooms' pillars as ramps.
Yo no subí por falta de tiempo pero, dicen, las vistas de Sevilla desde lo alto de Las Setas son espectaculares. Ofrecen unas panorámicas de 360º sobre la ciudad desde su mirador situado a casi 30 metros de altura. Y en el interior hay un museo de ruinas arqueológicas y un mercado con puestos de la mejor comida andaluza que puedas imaginar.
Todo eso, y sin duda más, lo veré en mi próxima visita a Sevilla. Ya que me he reconciliado co ella tendré que seguir creando nuevos recuerdos ¿no os parece?
Visitors can go up to an observation point or “mirador” to look down on the great structure and the beautiful city. Access to the lookout point is from the ground floor next to the Antiquarium. The Antiquarium is where you can see archaeological findings from the Roman era to the 6th century and the remains of an Almohad Moorish period house. The archaeological site is protected by a glass wall which surrounds the space.
I didn’t do any of that because I was run of time, I promise to make next time. Now I have reconciled with the city I have to make more memories, don’t you think so?
