Fue la grata sorpresa del día. No me esperaba entrar en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Santiago de Chile y encontrar esta exposición tan libre e innovadora sobre el imaginario gay, con guiños a la cultura pop, las telenovelas o la mansión Play Boy. Todas las obras son de José Pedro Godoy, un pintor chileno muy conocido en su país por tratar temas que otros no se atreven ni a nombrar.
La iconografía de la exposición tiene un aire de los 80 que, curiosamente, luce muy actual. Algunas figuras me recordaron a personajes de La Ley del Deseo de Almodóvar y otras a los antiguos carteles pintados a mano que antes ponían los cines para anunciar las películas.
Todo un maravilloso derroche de color, erotismo y libertad.
It was the pleasant surprise of the day. I did not expect to enter the Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago de Chile and find this exhibition so freely and innovative about gay imaginary, with winks to pop culture, telenovelas and even the Play Boy mansion. All works are by José Pedro Godoy, a Chilean painter very well known in his country for dealing with subjects that others do not dare to name.
The iconography of the exhibition look very 80’s and that, curiously, shines very modern. Some figures reminded me of characters of Almodóvar's movie The Law of Desire and others of the old hand-painted posters that the cinemas used to announce the movies before.
All a wonderful waste of color, eroticism and freedom.
Como veis las pinturas de Godoy son técnicas y muy perfeccionistas.Se caracterizan por presentar sensuales imágenes, paisajes de exuberante vegetación, exóticos animales, naturalezas muertas de objetos brillantes y desnudos masculinos. Destacan sus escenas eróticas y amorosas donde diferentes parejas o grupos de personajes, comparecen en atmósferas, a veces bucólicas y a veces catastróficas, cargadas de referencias a la historia del arte y la cultura popular.
La exposición, tal y como está concebida, no puedes parar de mirarla y tiene, incluso, un punto hipnótico. El encuadre de las escenas nos hace testigos indiscretos y nos recuerda nuestros propios miedos y escrúpulos frente al torrente de deseo que contemplamos.
As you see, Godoy's paintings are very technical and perfectionistic. They are characterized by sensual images, landscapes of lush vegetation, exotic animals, still lifes of bright objects and masculine nudes. They emphasize erotic and amorous scenes where different pairs or groups of personages appear in atmospheres sometimes bucolic and sometimes catastrophic. They are loaded with references to the history of the art and the popular culture.
I can guarantee that the the exhibition, as it is conceived, has a hypnotic effect and it is impossible not stopping to look at it. The setting of the scenes makes us indiscreet witnesses and reminds us of our own fears and scruples in front of the torrent of desire that we are contemplating.
Se me olvidó comentaros que la exposición se llama “Historia Violenta y Luminosa” y viene de una frase de la gran actriz mexicana María Felix cuando le preguntaron que calificase a su país. A él encantó su respuesta; “Mexico es violento y luminoso”, dijo la artista y Godoy se lo puso a su exposición.
Si estais en Chile o pensais ir no os la perdais, estará hasta el 19 de marzo. Esperemos que pronto vaya a otros países para que disfrutemos de su arte.
I forgot to tell you that the exhibition is called "Violent and Bright History" and comes from a phrase from the great Mexican actress María Felix when she was asked to rate her country. He delighted her response; "Mexico is violent and luminous," said the artist and Godoy named it to his exposition.
