Aunque parezca que este 2020 sólo va a pasar a la historia por esta triste pandemia, hay algo que celebrar y, además, a lo grande. Celebramos que hace cien años el autor de El camino, Madera de héroe, Cinco horas con Mario y Los santos inocentes llegó al mundo. Miguel Delibes nos dejó en 2010 pero nos queda el deseo de saber y aprender más sobre una de las plumas más influyentes de nuestra historia en la exposición que la Biblioteca Nacional de España dedica a la trayectoria vital del escritor y a su universo literario.
Lo que aquí vais a encontrar es basicamente su vida. Circunstancias familiares, aficiones, sus amigos, su manera de trabajar y de entender la escritura y la vida, sus hábitos creativos… todo está presente en esta exposición, comisariada por el periodista y escritor Jesús Marchamalo.
Es un placer ver los manuscritos originales de las principales obras del escritor, así como su correspondencia con otros escritores, sus primeras ediciones, objetos personales, fotografías o retratos; entre otros, el de John Ulbricht que preside el salón de su casa, o el famoso Señora de rojo sobre fondo gris, de su mujer, Ángeles de Castro, obra de Eduardo García Benito, que tuvo siempre tras su mesa de trabajo.
Yo le doy gracias a mis profesores de literatura por obligarme a leer sus obras que siempre me dejaban con la sensación de haber asistido a algo trascendente. Ahora con el tiempo miro hacia atrás y pienso que, quizás, fuera la influencia del propio Delibes la que me inculcara el amor por la escritura y el periodismo, sus dos grandes pasiones (y también las mías)
Así que, sin dudarlo, me fui a la Biblioteca Nacional para parar 1 hora con Delibes.
Although it seems that 2020 will only be made history by this sad pandemic, there is something to celebrate and, moreover, in a big way. We celebrate that one hundred years ago the author of The Way, Wood of a Hero, Five Hours with Mario and The Holy Innocents came into the world. Miguel Delibes left us in 2010 but we still have the desire to know and learn more about one of the most influential feathers of our history in the exhibition that the National Library of Spain dedicates to the life of the writer and his literary universe.
What you will find here is basically his life. Family circumstances, hobbies, his friends, his way of working and understanding writing and life, his creative habits... everything is present in this exhibition, curated by the journalist and writer Jesús Marchamalo.
It is a pleasure to see the original manuscripts of the writer's main works, as well as his correspondence with other writers, his first editions, personal objects, photographs or portraits; among others, that of John Ulbricht who presides over his living room, or the famous Lady in Red on a Grey Background, by his wife, Ángeles de Castro, a work by Eduardo García Benito, which he always had behind his desk.
I thank my literature teachers for forcing me to read his books, which always left me with the feeling of having attended something transcendent. Now, as time goes by, I look back and think that perhaps it was the influence of Delibes himself that infused me his love for writing and journalism, his two great passions (and mine as well)
So, without hesitation, I went to the National Library to stop for an hour with Delibes.
La exposición está dividida en dos apartados. Su recorrido nos desvela la trayectoria vital de Miguel Delibes y su universo literario: sus vínculos familiares, sus aficiones, sus amigos, su manera de trabajar y de entender la escritura, sus hábitos creativos...
La primera parte recorre la biografía de Delibes: el niño, el abuelo francés, la vida al aire libre, el cazador y conservacionista, el caricaturista, el joven profesor... hasta el Premio Nadal, que le fue otorgado en 1947 por La sombra del ciprés es alargada, y que orientó su carrera hacia la escritura. Aquí se ve la imagen más conocida de la trayectoria de Delibes, pero también la más entrañable, familiar e íntima, desconocida para el gran público.
La segunda parte de la exposición está dedicada a su obra, sus libros y sus personajes. Una tercera sala expone los manuscritos originales de algunos de sus libros más conocidos: El camino, Las ratas, El príncipe destronado, Cinco horas con Mario, Los santos inocentes... acompañados por la voz del actor José Sacristán, que se ha grabado expresamente para esta exposición leyendo sus primeras páginas.
Por último, vereis una parte dedicada a la relación del autor con el cine, que ha adaptado a la pantalla una gran parte de sus obras, siendo la película más destacada Los santos inocentes, que dirigió Mario Camus.
The exhibition is divided into two areas. Its journey reveals the life trajectory of Miguel Delibes and his literary universe: his family ties, his hobbies, his friends, his way of working and understanding writing, his creative habits...
The first part reviews Delibes' biography: the boy, the French grandfather, the life in the open air, the hunter and conservationist, the cartoonist, the young teacher... until the Nadal Prize, which was awarded to him in 1947 for La sombra del ciprés es elargada, and which oriented his career towards writing. Here you can see the best known image of Delibes' career, but also the most endearing, familiar and intimate, unknown to the general public.
The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to his work, his books and his characters. A third room exhibits the original manuscripts of some of his best known books: The Way, The Rats, The Dethroned Prince, Five Hours with Mario, The Holy Innocents... accompanied by the voice of the actor José Sacristán, which has been recorded expressly for this exhibition by reading its first pages.
Finally, you will see a section devoted to the author's relationship with the cinema, which has adapted a large part of his works to the screen, the most outstanding film being Los santos inocentes, directed by Mario Camus.
Si tuviese que elegir algo para llevarme a casa de esta maravillosa exposición, yo me quedaría con el telegrama que en 1948 le anunciaba que había ganado el Premio Nadal, y con el manuscrito original del discurso que pronunció en 1975 durante su ceremonia de ingreso en la Real Academia Española. Un discurso escrito en un cuaderno de hojas cuadriculadas y en el que nos alertaba de los peligros que suponía para la naturaleza el progreso descontrolado. Un texto que, leído hoy, da la razón a un Miguel Delibes visionario y protoecologista.

If I had to choose something to take home from this wonderful exhibition, I would keep the telegram that in 1948 announced that he had won the Nadal Prize, and the original manuscript of the speech he gave in 1975 during his admission ceremony to the Royal Spanish Academy. A speech written in a notebook of gridded sheets and in which he warned us of the dangers to nature of uncontrolled progress. A text that, read today, proves a visionary and pro-ecologist Miguel Delibes right.
