Tres horas estuvo saltando la pobre Marylin Monroe hasta que fotógrafo Philippe Halsman consiguiera lo que él quería: una portada para la revista LIFE. La foto era el reclamo de la exposición que vi en Barcelona sobre la obra de este gran artista de los 50 que inmortalizó con su cámara lo más florido del Hollywood de la época. Suyas son icónicas instantáneas como los retratos promocionales de Alfred Hitchcock para el estreno de «Los pájaros» o sus series dedicadas a Marilyn Monroe.
No es casualidad que Halsman haya pasado a la historia como el fotógrafo que firmó más portadas –101, ahí es nada– para la revista «Life».
Yo intenté saltar también y, creedme, no me salió ninguna bien; así que entiendo perfectamente porque Marylin estuvo 3 horas a punto de emprender vuelo.
Portraits of Jean Cocteau, Marilyn Monroe, Alfred Hitchcock, and the King of England are among those on display at CaixaForum Barcelona’s retrospective of photographer Philippe Halsman. Featuring 300 photographs and documents from the photographer’s extensive career, “Astonish Me!” is the first Spanish retrospective of the American photographer who, among other achievements, undertook 110 covers for LIFE magazine. Halsman also popularized the portrait concept of people jumping — at the time a revolutionary idea that has since become a photographic cliché, unavoidable at any graduation ceremony.
En esta exposición se ofrece una amplia y completa panorámica de la carrera del fotógrafo así como sus múltiples conexiones con la cultura popular del siglo XXI y el arte de vanguardia. La muestra arranca con los primeros pasos de Halsman en el París de los años treinta, donde se especializó en el retrato y expuso por primera vez en La Pléiade. Ya entonces empezó a mostrar preferencia por entornos íntimos y sesiones amenas que facilitaran la comunicación con sus modelos, algo que exploraría a conciencia cuando se trasladó a Estados Unidos y, además de fotografíar durante una década a Marilyn Monroe, capturó con su cámara a personajes como Clint Eastwood, Bobby Fischer, Cassius Clay, Audrey Hepburn y Grace Kelly, entre muchos otros.
Termed “jumpology” by Halsman, jumping was used by him as a psychological tool. He believed that it showed people without inhibitions; as he once said, when someone jumps, “the mask falls.” As such, Halsman saw it as a crucial tool for photographing celebrities, allowing him to cut through the façade of their media image.
Among the jumpologists Halsman shows in the exhibition are Marilyn Monroe, who he tried to convince for three years to jump for a shoot before she finally agreed. Monroe jumped 200 times for the resulting image, which became iconic when it appeared on the LIFE cover in 1957. Others who took a leap of faith with Halsman include the Duchess and Duke of Windsor — also known at one time as Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII.
Además de sus retratos de famosos y de la serie «Jumpology», que dio lugar al libro «Philippe Halsman’s Jump Book», si por algo destacó la carrera de Halsman fue por su intensa y fructífera colaboración con Salvador Dalí. Durante cuatro décadas, el genio surrealista y el fotógrafo compartieron casi cincuenta sesiones y apuntalaron una complicidad que se materializaría en iconos contemporáneos como «El surrealismo soy yo», «Dalí Atomicus» o la serie «Dalí’s Moustache», un conjunto de imágenes con el bigote del pintor como protagonista que Halsman ideó para dar forma a otro libro
Another highlight of the exhibition featuring Halsman’s career of nearly five decades is his collaboration with Salvador Dalí. In their book “Dalí’s Moustache,” 1954, Halsman showcased many images of the Spanish surrealist with his facial hair in various positions, some of which — such as one in which Dali’s moustache obscures his eyes; or where Dali, a stream of water, and three cats are all jumping — are among the most remembered portrayals of Dalí. In this exhibition, they stand alongside similarly iconic images of figures like Albert Einstein, Audrey Hepburn, and Andre Malraux.
Ah, se me olvidaba, la exposición se llamaba “Sorpréndeme” y así me quedé yo, sorprendido y con muchas ganas de haber vivido aquellos maravillosos y dorados años 50 ( so sí junto a Marilyn, Joan Crawford, Hitchcock y todo lo mejor de Hollywood, claro está) . Menos mal que nos queda el legado de Halsman para hacernos una idea.
Oh I almost forgot, the exhibition was called "Surprise me" and so I was surprised and eager to have lived those wonderful and golden 50's ( with Marilyn, Joan Crawford, Hitchcock and all the best of Hollywood, of course). Luckily we have the legacy of Halsman to get an idea of how it was.
