Por fin me acerqué el pasado fin de semana a conocer el famoso Mercado de Motores, el mercadillo vintage más famoso de nuestro país que ha logrado que muchos madrileños descubran que en la capital existe un Museo del Ferrocarril, ubicado en la que fuera sede de la antigua estación de Delicias.
Además de ser un ejemplo representativo de la arquitectura industrial española, cada segundo fin de semana de mes sus andenes se llenan con el centenar de puestos del Mercado de Motores, en los que hay desde objetos de diseño, decoración y mobiliario a moda vintage, complementos, papelería y productos gourmet.
En la zona exterior, más puestos, en este caso de segunda mano, donde se pueden encontrar a buen precio vinilos, ropa, relojes o juguetes antiguos. Hay también una zona de comida con food trucks , música en directo y nuevos puestos cada mes por lo que cada edición siempre es diferente a la anterior.
Es, sin duda, uno de los mercadillos más interesantes que vas a ver.

Once a month, El Mercado de Motores (meaning the Engine Market) takes over an old train museum in downtown Madrid for a unique flea market experience. Independent collectors and designers set up vintage stands right alongside Madrid’s old trains, creating a mix of 20th century charm with cluttered treasure madness.
As you walk along the platform, amidst the stands you’ll find handmade leather shoes, vintage jewellery, funkily upholstered arm chairs, quirky lamp shades, and much more.
The market started out as a community-led effort to popularize second-hand goods. Now it sells everything from current designer items, chic furniture, rare art and even retro pieces, plus it also offers tons of outstanding food, a happening outdoor space, and free live music.
Como veis se trata de una especie de rastro, o mercado de pulgas, pero con el toque especial que le brinda el emblemático lugar en el que se encuentra, la antigua Estación de Delicias, el espectacular espacio de diseño industrial de finales del siglo XIX que en su día dio servicio a la red de trenes de Madrid y que en la actualidad alberga una exposición de ferrocarriles.
Todo este ambiente “vintage” hace especialmente llamativo al mercadillo ya que los trenes que están apeados en lo andenes son autenticas joyas locomotrices que en su día circularon por las vías de toda la geografía española.
De aire hípster, ambiente heterogéneo a más no poder y muy familiar podrás encontrar dentro de su Nave Principal más de 100 puestos de emprendedores con artículos muy originales, artesanales y de diseño. Lo mismo encuentras el último grito en zapatillas como unas gafas vintage de Louis Vuitton.
Hay productos gastronómicos gourmet, ropa y complementos para adultos y niños, mobiliario, artículos de decoración, juguetes…
Todos los puestos pasan un filtro de “calidad”, es decir, los objetos que venden están en muy buen estado. He llegado a ver bolsos de firma impecables; incluso zapatos sin apenas uso.
Además encontrarás todo tipo de objetos curiosos y de coleccionista desde radiocassettes, discos, libros, comics hasta juguetes antiguos. Eso si, si vas con niños te tocará explicarles que esos “cacharros son de tu época”
One of the other highlights of the market is its outdoor ambience. On a sunny day, it’s such a nice place to eat outside with friends and family. Sample from all types of food stalls, some selling regional Spanish dishes such as paella and fabada (Asturian white bean stew), others selling sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs, and find a place to sit. Here’s when you should start to linger and enjoy the ambience, listening to live music as it spontaneously comes on.
Mercado de Motores is in fact something quite unique for both the unusual and original location where it takes place and for the range of items on sale. Every second weekend (during both Saturday and Sunday) of each month the former train station “Delicias” changes its usual appearance and transforms into a very lively place where a mixture of people gather together either for shopping, or simply to spend a different day out whilst meeting friends or to enjoy the view of old trains together with a fashionable market. Who knew that there was an old railway station in Madrid that once a month turned into a market?
It is incredible to see how the vendors set their stands between beautiful steam trains from the 19th century, both passenger trains that who knows how many people have transported in the past and diesel locomotives that looked almost like new, definitely an incredible and different market setting, something that we aren’t used to seeing everywhere.
Hay actividades para los más peques, como talleres de papiroflexia y jardinería y un mini-tren con puentes, túneles y estaciones para que disfruten un poco más del museo. Y para diversión de todos, una terraza exterior en la que reponer fuerzas con la comida de los diversos puestos: hamburguesas, tacos mejicanos, sushi… y croquetas. Y si la ocasión es propicia también se puede acompañar todo esto de unas cañas o unos cócteles.
Lo mires por donde lo mires, este mercadillo vintage lo tiene todo.
The beautiful iron and wooden old train station structure creates a very spacious market area big enough to also expose the well preserved old trains too that, even if you aren’t interested in, you cannot avoid admiring and perhaps finding yourself liking more than you thought, like in my own case.
También encontrarás objetos relacionados con la tradición ferroviaria. Si quieres, puedes subir a los vagones, entrar y sentarte cómodamente en estas máquinas antiguas. Y lo mejor, gracias a este mercado, la visibilidad del museo (un poco olvidado hasta la fecha) es muchoooo mayor. En la última edición, más de 25.000 personas curiosearon este emblemático lugar.
A diferencia de otros mercados especializados en pequeños artesanos, como por ejemplo el Nómada Market, no hay que pagar por entrar. Lo cual… ¡se agradece! El Nómada, del que os hablaré en otra ocasión, también merece la pena, y mucho. Pero en el de Motores podrás entrar y salir cuantas veces quieras, si la afluencia de público lo permite, claro. Un consejo: vete con tiempo y huye de las horas punta.

It’s incredible the variety of items on sale at this market, there were plenty of objects and clothes that you can probably only find in your grandmothers house, but nowadays we call it vintage and we are all crazy about it.
The stuff that I liked the most and that I found more unique and fascinating was the amount huge of current design pieces, homemade crafts, art creations, chic brands, contemporary and modern furniture mixed amongst the older ones, pieces done by Spanish and foreign designers that you cannot find at any other market.
Mercado de Motores is definitely an out of the ordinary market and this is what I particularly liked and enjoyed about it. Its cheerful and energetic vibe got us in a good mood and despite being a little crowded – something that I usually don’t really like – I had a great time thanks also to the jazz band playing live music with one of the many old trains as a backdrop.
Ah, I almost forgot, the entrance in free. Great.
