El domingo pasado me fui a ver algunas de las meninas que el Ayuntamiento ha colocado por segundo año consecutivo en lugares emblematicos de Madrid.
Yo, que siempre había dado por supuesto que estas figuras de Velázquez eran conocidas en el mundo entero, no podía creerme que una pareja de turistas norteamericanos me preguntasen qué eran aquellas “cosas” que estaban viendo por todo Madrid. ¡Vaya jarro de agua fría!. Conocían Goya (menos mal) pero de Velázquez, nada de nada.
Tampoco les expliqué mucho lo que eran, la verdad. Les dije que fueran al Museo del Prado a ver esta obra maestra de la pintura española del XVII y poco más. Eso sí, sentí un pequeño punzón en mi orgullo patrio.
En cualquier caso yo seguí disfrutando de estas maravillosas meninas del siglo XXI, con sus pomposas faltas y actitud altiva, que hasta finales de noviembre estarán expuestas por toda la ciudad.
Son 50, miden 1,80 de alto y ha sido creadas por artistas plásticos, actores y actrices, chefs o deportistas como Rosana, Rafael Nadal, Dani Rovira, Ouka Leele, Samantha Vallejo-Nájera, María Pombo, Quique Dacosta o Minerva Piquero, entre otros muchos.
Es imposible verlas y no hacerse una foto con ellas.
On Sunday I went to see some of the meninas that the City Council has placed for the second consecutive year in emblematic places of Madrid.
I had always assumed that these Velázquez figures were known all over the world, so I couldn't believe that a couple of American tourists asked me what those "things" were that they were seeing all over Madrid. What a disappointment I got. They knew Goya (thank goodness) but Velázquez, nothing at all.
I didn't tell them much about what they were, either. I told them to go to the Prado Museum to see this masterpiece of 17th-century Spanish painting and little more. However, I felt a small punch in my patriotic pride.
Anyway I kept enjoying these wonderful meninas of the XXI century, with their pompous faults and haughty attitude, which until the end of November will be exhibited all over the city.
They are 50, measuring 1.80 high and has been created by artists, actors and actresses, chefs or athletes such as Rosana, Rafael Nadal, Dani Rovira, Ouka Leele, Samantha Vallejo-Nájera, María Pombo, Quique Dacosta or Minerva Piquero, among many others.
It is impossible to see them and not take a picture with them.
La“Menina art gallery” ( que así se llama la muestra) busca potenciar el talento de nuevos artistas y dar la oportunidad de mostrar otra faceta a profesionales de prestigio de sectores que no parecen relacionados con el arte. Asimismo, es una oportunidad perfecta para callejear por Madrid y descubrir nuevos rincones, comercio local o espacios gastronómicos.
Tiene también una vertiente solidaria, ya que algunas figuras serán subastadas y los beneficios se destinarán a ONGs seleccionadas por los artistas o los patrocinadores como la Fundación Rafael Nadal y las Fundaciones Querer, Aladina, Ochotumbao, Lukas, Alain Afflelou yTransexualia.
No hay dos meninas iguales y todas tienen un potente mensaje detrás. Bien las estés buscando o bien te topes con ellas de forma inesperada, recuerda mantener los ojos abiertos. Todas tienen una historia que contar. Soló pasa tu movil por el código QR que hay en la base y ellas mismas te hablarán.
The "Menina art gallery" (which is the name of the exhibition) seeks to promote the talent of new artists and give the opportunity to show another face to prestigious professionals from sectors that do not seem related to art. It is also a perfect opportunity to explore Madrid and discover new corners, local commerce or gastronomic spaces.
It also has a solidarity aspect, as some figures will be auctioned and the profits will go to NGOs selected by the artists or sponsors such as the Rafael Nadal Foundation and the Querer, Aladina, Ochotumbao, Lukas, Alain Afflelou and Transexualia Foundations.
There are no two meninas alike and they all have a powerful message behind them. Whether you are looking for them or run into them unexpectedly, remember to keep your eyes open. They all have a story to tell. Just run your mobile through the QR code in the base and they will talk to you themselves.
Y pensar que estaban destinadas a un lugar secundario en la historia, pero acabaron convirtiéndose en personajes principales. Las meninas no solo han dado nombre al cuadro más famoso de Diego Velázquez, sino que también siguen acaparando estudios y miradas curiosas. Tres siglos después de ser inmortalizadas por el pintor sevillano han saltado de nuevo del lienzo a las calles madrileñas para recordarnos a todos quiénes somos y de dónde venimos.
Toda la ciudad se rinde a un icono que, revisado y reinterpretado, salta a la calle y nos sorprende por todos los rincones de la capital.

In case you don´t know Las Meninas is a 1656 painting by Diego Velázquez, one of the Spanish Golden Age’s leading artists, who worked in the court of Philip IV. The painting, which is one of the star attractions of Madrid’s Prado Museum, depicts the young princess Margarita Teresa surrounded by several members of the court, including her ladies in waiting, dwarves and, in the background, Velázquez himself.
The painting has been classed as one of the most important in Western art history and has long divided critics with its enigmatic symbolism and references.
