Es descomunal pero no amenazadora. Se llama Julia, tiene 12 años y la vais a poder ver durante todo el 2019 allí callada en la Plaza de Colón de Madrid. Es cierto que el rostro de esta niña de mármol de 12 metros de altura impone por su tamaño, pero su expresión transmite una profunda paz. Sus párpados caídos y sus labios relajados, como si estuviera sumida en profundos pensamientos o a punto de quedarse dormida, despiertan una gran ternura.
He leído que su creador, el escultor Jaume Plensa, la diseñó precisamente para eso; para que cuando pasemos por ahí nos detengamos a reflexionar y, de paso, darle un toque de humanidad a esta gigantesca plaza madrileña.
A mí me hizo pensar. Misión cumplida.
It is huge but not threatening. Her name is Julia, she is 12 years old and you will be able to see her during the whole 2019 there, very quiet at Plaza de Colón in Madrid. It is true that the face of this 12-meter-tall marble girl imposes by its size, but her expression conveys a deep peace. Her drooping eyelids and relaxed lips, as if she were in deep thoughts or about to fall asleep, arouse great tenderness everyone.
I have read that its creator, the sculptor Jaume Plensa, designed it precisely for that; so that when we pass by there we stop to reflect and give a touch of humanity as well to this gigantic square in Madrid.

Julia está hecha de resina de poliéster y polvo de mármol blanco, ocupa el pedestal donde estaba la estatua de Cristobal Colón y llama la atención por donde quieras que la veas.
La ubicación no podía ser más céntrica y ruidosa. Por allí pasan al día miles de coches, autobuses, taxis, viandantes y es verdad que la presencia de Julia introduce en ese bullicioso espacio en medio de la calle un toque de ternura, armonía y silencio.
Esta obra ha sido realizada bajo el mecenazgo de la Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson para Madrid, en un proyecto que inició el anterior equipo del Ayuntamiento de la capital y que ahora el equipo de la actual alcaldesa ha rematado.

Julia is made of polyester resin and white marble powder, occupies the pedestal where was the statue of Christopher Columbus and draws attention wherever you want to see it.
The location could not be more central and noisy. Thousands of cars, buses, taxis, pedestrians pass by and it is true that Julia's presence introduces a touch of tenderness, harmony and silence into this bustling space in the middle of the street.
This work has been carried out under the patronage of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation for Madrid, in a project initiated by the previous team of the City Council of the capital and now the team of the current mayor has finished.

Y vosotros os estaréis preguntando ¿adónde mira Julia? Pues hacia dentro. Porque su intención es que cada uno exprese su mundo interior. El artista la define como “un mantel en blanco donde cada uno pinta sus sueños”.
¿Y por qué da la espalda a la plaza? Pues porque cuenta algo diferente en cada una de sus tres dimensiones. Cuando la veáis de cerca prestad mucha atención en sus cabellos, Plensa le ha puesto mucho mimo y realismo en su corta melena.
La niña blanca de 12 metros nos invitará al silencio y a la reflexión cada vez que nos crucemos con ella.
And you are wondering where does Julia look? Well, inside. Because her intention is for everyone to express their inner world. The artist defines it as "a blank tablecloth where everyone paints their dreams".
And why does she turn her back on the square? Well, because it has something different in each of its three dimensions. When you see her up close pay close attention to her hair, Plensa has put a lot of care and realism in her short hair.
