Una cosa está muy clara: si uno quiere estar al corriente de todo lo que cuece en las corrientes artísticas vinculadas al Pop Art tiene que ir a darse una vuelta por La Fiambrera, una galería de arte situada en pleno corazón de Malasaña que, desde que abrió sus puertas allá por el 2014, se ha convertido en un templo para los amantes (como yo) de este tipo de arte.
Y eso fue lo que hice; me pasé por allí para ver in situ los trabajos del artista norteamericano Josh Agle (Shag) que rememoran los quince años que Ava Gardner, “el animal más bello del mundo”, vivió en España, así como las correrías que protagonizó.
La exposición de llama “Ava, Ava”y surgió hace tres años, durante la última visita de Shag a Madrid para asistir a la inauguración de su individual “Drinking Spree”. Fue entonces cuando conoció las legendarias anécdotas y aventuras de la estrella de Hollywood en su refugio español.
Para “Ava, Ava” Shag ha decidido reducir su mundialmente reconocida paleta de colores y resolver las obras con un espectro cromático mínimo, reflejando en cierta forma una sociedad todavía en blanco y negro en la que según el artista “Ava brillaba como una bombilla en el desván”.
There is one thing that is absolutely obvious: if you want to be up to date with everything linked to Pop Art, you have to visit La Fiambrera, an art gallery located in the heart of Madrid which, since its opening in 2015, has become a temple for lovers (like me) of this type of art.
And that's what I did; I stopped by to see the works of the American artist Josh Agle (Shag) that evoke the fifteen years that Ava Gardner, "the most beautiful animal in the world", lived in Spain, as well as the great time she had in the Spanish capital.
The exhibition is called "Ava, Ava" and it came up three years ago, during Shag's last visit to Madrid to attend the inauguration of his individual "Drinking Spree". It was then when he heard about the legendary anecdotes and adventures of the Hollywood star in her Spanish refuge.
For "Ava, Ava" Shag has decided to reduce his world-renowned color palette and create works with a minimal chromatic spectrum, reflecting in a way a society still in black and white in which, according to the artist, "Ava shone like a light bulb in the attic".
La historia de Ava Gardner en España es eso, historia, pero muy loca y divertida. Ella se mudó a Madrid a mitad de los años 50, quizá huyendo del estrellato y de Frank Sinatra, pero también deslumbrada por una ciudad en la que extrañamente podía hacer lo que quisiese y en la que se sentía libre. Entre las personalidades y personajes que la acompañaron en estos frenéticos años había espías, toreros, escritores, bailaoras, actores, ex-generales exiliados, pintores, cantantes, y playboys, que entre rodaje y rodaje de la diva se iban de borrachera y de jarana por locales y tablaos como Chicote, Villa Rosa, la Cervecería Alemana, Los Gabrieles, Riscal, El Duende o el Café Olivier.
Además de las nuevas obras originales de Ava, Ava La Fiambrera expone una veintena de las más recientes serigrafías que el artista californiano ha realizado en los últimos dos años. Todas las serigrafías expuestas son pruebas de artista, copias provenientes del archivo personal de Shag, numeradas y firmadas por él, en su mayor parte agotadas.
The story of Ava Gardner in Spain is a story, but very crazy and funny. She moved to Madrid in the mid-50s, perhaps fleeing stardom and Frank Sinatra, but also dazzled by a city where she could strangely do whatever she wanted and where she felt free. Some of the celebrities and figures who accompanied her during these frenetic years were spies, bullfighters, writers, dancers, actors, exiled ex-generals, painters, singers, and playboys, who between filming sessions of the diva used to go to places like Chicote, Villa Rosa, Cervecería Alemana, Los Gabrieles, Riscal, El Duende or Café Olivier to have much more than fun.
In addition to the new original works La Fiambrera exhibits some twenty of the most recent serigraphs that the Californian artist has made in the last two years. All the serigraphs on display are artist's proofs, copies from Shag's personal archive, numbered and signed by him, most of them sold out.
Detrás de la firma Shag se esconde el artista norteamericano Josh Agle, nacido en California en 1962 (su nombre artístico está formado por las dos últimas letras de su nombre y las dos primeras de su apellido). Shag, que empezó siendo un favorito de culto después de su primera exposición en la influyente galería La Luz de Jesús en 1998, se ha convertido en un exitoso artista que coleccionan famosas estrellas de Hollywood, y que expone en las mejores galerías de Nueva York, Los Angeles, o Sidney.
La obra de Shag se distingue por un estilo único que, partiendo de la ilustración y el grafismo americano de mitad del siglo veinte, recrea escenas teñidas de ironía y de humor travieso más características de nuestro tiempo. En su enigmático estilo el artista se pone en el punto de vista de un espectador distante, al que lo que realmente interesa es la historia que se intuye detrás de las imágenes, la cual no explica, y su narrativa misteriosa e inquietante.
Sus cuadros, de apariencia kitsch, líneas claras y colores brillantes, celebran el consumismo y la buena vida sin complejos; sus personajes beben, fuman, y comen en escenarios estilosos y sofisticados y mansiones caras y lujosas.
La exposición estará en La Fiambrera hasta el 19 de enero. Os encantará.
Shag is a painter, designer and illustrator working in Southern California. His distinctive artistic style draws from commercial illustration from the past five decades, but the work is imbued with an attitude and sly sense of humor which is unmistakably of our time. Solo exhibitions of Shag's work have been held in the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and South America.
The paintings themselves celebrate consumerism and consumption on vividly colored sharply rendered panels; the characters drink, smoke and eat in lavish, stylish surroundings. But Shag sees the visuals of his work as window-dressing or stage scenery. He's more concerned with the themes and narratives in the paintings, and the meanings a viewer might find when he looks at a piece of Shag art.
Shag lives with his wife and children in a mid-century home overlooking a peaceful wooded valley, much like homes he paints in his art. He considers Palm Springs, California his second home and is an enthusiastic booster for the city. In 2009 The Shag Store opened in Palm Springs. It is the world's first retail boutique and gallery dedicated solely to his art, prints and merchandise, and has quickly become a must-see destination for people visiting the city.
