Hay días en los que el Retiro parece guardar un secreto. Caminas entre los árboles, escuchas el crujido de la grava bajo los pies, y de pronto aparece: el Palacio de Cristal, pero no como lo recuerdas. Ya no es ese cuerpo transparente que dejaba pasar la luz como si fuera agua. Ahora está envuelto, recogido, casi acurrucado dentro de una gran piel textil que lo transforma por completo. Es Fardo, la obra de Andrea Canepa, y es imposible no detenerse ante ella.
La lona no intenta imitar el edificio ni disimular las obras. Al contrario: lo cubre con una franqueza casi tierna, como quien protege algo frágil. There are days when El Retiro seems to be keeping a secret. You walk between the trees, hear the gravel crunch under your feet, and suddenly it appears: the Crystal Palace, but not as you remember it. It’s no longer that transparent body that let the light pass through like water. Now it’s wrapped, gathered, almost curled up inside a great textile skin that transforms it completely. It’s Fardo, the work of Andrea Canepa, and it’s impossible not to stop and stare.
The covering doesn’t try to imitate the building or disguise the construction work. On the contrary: it envelops it with a kind of tender honesty, as if protecting something fragile. Canepa has turned the palace into a monumental bundle, a suspended package in the landscape, an object that seems to be waiting for something. And in that waiting, in that silence, there is an unexpected beauty.

A wrapping that tells stories
The title, Fardo, is no coincidence. In many cultures, a fardo is a bundle wrapped in cloth, rope, or natural fibers to transport or safeguard something valuable. Canepa takes that ancient idea and pushes it to the extreme: what happens when the thing you wrap isn’t an object, but an entire building?
The result is surprisingly intimate. The Crystal Palace, which has always played with transparency, now becomes opaque. What used to be light is now shadow. What used to be openness is now containment. And yet, nothing is lost—something is transformed.
The fabric, with its folds, tensions, and textures, is not a mere technical covering. It’s a gesture. A gesture of care, of pause, of respect. As if the artist had decided that, while the restorers work inside, the palace needed an embrace.

Canepa doesn’t try to “hide” the construction work, but to accompany it. Her intervention acts as a bridge between what the palace was and what it will become. A reminder that heritage also needs to rest, to pause, to be cared for. And that even in that pause, it can continue to generate beauty.
