Sin duda Bermondsey Street es, hoy en día, una de las zonas de moda en Londres aunque no siempre fue así. Este barrio, a tan sólo 10 minutos del London Bridge, es el claro ejemplo de cómo se puede resurgir de las cenizas y convertirse en centro de peregrinación para los que buscan un Londres sin turistas, locales a la última, compras de calidad, galerías de arte y moda 100% British.
La historia de este barrio es curiosa y tiene mucha relación con lo que se ha transformado en la actualidad. Desde la Edad Media hasta el siglo XIX esta rivera del Támesis estaba llena de naves industriales donde los curtidores de piel trabajaban el cuero y la lana y aprovechaban las grandes mareas del rio para lavar las pieles para después enviarlas a sus destinos desde los embarcaderos. Mas de la mitad del comercio de pieles de Inglaterra salía de este barrio.
Hoy en día, aquellas naves industriales son preciosos lofts, restaurantes de moda, locales comerciales de moda, galerías de arte...en fin como os decía al principio el claro ejemplo de cómo un barrio se puede reinventar a sí mismo sin perder sus raíces. Bienvenidos a Bermondsay Street.
From a neglected area full of empty warehouses to a sophisticated urban centre in just a few decades, Bermondsey is a prime example of how rapidly the fortunes of a London area can change.
Situated on the southern bank of the river Thames, Bermondsey is a very historic part of the city which has developed a reputation for sleek warehouse apartments, excellent restaurants and cool cultural museums in recent years. Bermondsey Street itself has become somewhat of a food-lovers paradise, packed full of independent restaurants, bakeries and delicatessens, while world-famous gourmet markets Borough Market and Maltby Street Market are a short walk away. Locals, who are predominantly young professionals working in city trades or affluent students, can normally be found frequenting the many coffee shops, quirky bars and small galleries during the weekend.Despite the location so close to central London, Bermondsey still feels rather like a separate village with tightly packed streets leading on to the open spaces of the quayside developments.
En el momento de que piseis el barrio ya veréis como el ambiente en general se vuelve diferente ( sobre todo si venís del centro de la ciudad donde se agolpan todos los turistas). La atmósfera es más relajada; en las tiendas os darán los buenos días e incluso charlarán un poco con vosotros, los restaurantes se vuelven mas pequeños con camareros que sonríen y los bares ( sobre todo por la tarde después del trabajo) los veréis atestados de gente del barrio que han quedado para tomar algo.
Si os interesa el arte ( que espero que así sea) Bermondsey Street está repleto de pequeñas galerías de colecciones fascinantes y siempre a la última. A mí me llamó la atención la Eames Fine Art Gallery, en concreto está exposición de los ingleses Anita Klein y su marido Nigel Swift sobre su reciente viaje a Australia. Colores, mundo onírico, luces, rostros con un toque picassiano...todo lo que a mí me fascina.
The rising prices of property in the area have led to accusations of gentrification with the sale of ex-local authority apartment buildings being a particularly controversial issue, but most changes have been welcomed, especially by those who remember the derelict buildings and poor reputation of the 1970s.
Although there’s some green space nearby in the form of Southwark Park, Bermondsey is about as close to true urban living as you can get, so if you want somewhere with all the hectic hustle and bustle of London, then this could be the perfect place for you.
If you like art ( I hope so) you will love Eames Fine Art Gallery. Husband and wife; Nigel Swift and Anita Klein, made a month long visit to Australia earlier this year and came back with portfolios full of wonderful new artworks. Although their work is very different in style and subject, both artists' work was clearly effected by the colours, the light and the experience of working in Australia. This exhibition is a fascinating and beautiful exploration of the Australian landscape, the wildlife, and of what it's like living in this environment.
Siguiendo con la tradición de rescatar oficios artesanales, es curioso ver cómo en pleno Londres aún hay fábricas donde hacen el vidrio "a la antigua”; es decir en hornos casi artesanales donde les dan formas, texturas, cientos de colores y luego los venden en la tienda. Eso es lo que puedes admirar en la London Glassblowing en el corazón de Bermondsey. Creedme que fue una experiencia única sentir el calor abrasador de los hornos donde funden el vidrio ( insisto en pleno Londres), ver cómo lo trabajan, diseñan y más tarde lo ponen a la venta.

I could experience the heat and magic of the ancient craft of glassmaking while watching a gather of molten glass evolve into something of value and beauty.f you love beautiful things, you will love this gallery. The pieces on display are original, gorgeous and inspirational. Only wish we could afford to make a purchase. A treat for the eyes and the soul.The receptionist is lovely and welcoming.There glass products on display and for purchase is amazing. They are beautifully crafted. At the same time, you can see some of the glassmaking being produced which is fascinating. One can appreciate the skill involved.
El barrio donde antiguamente se curtían todo tipo de pieles y se daba forma al cuero se ha convertido hoy en centro de moda de vanguardia. No encontrareis aquí grandes marcas internacionales sino diseñadores locales que ven en las tiendas de Bermondsay un escaparate ideal para vender sus productos ( no en vano los entendidos en moda siempre se pasan por aquí para ver qué se cuece por estos lares del Támesis).
Como no podía ser de otra forma el Fashion and Textile Museum se encuentra aquí. Es un impresionante edificio naranja y rosa chicle diseñado por el arquitecto mexicano Ricardo Legarreta. Reconozco que me esperaba un poco más de este museo aunque sólo por disfrutar de los espectaculares diseños de la casa italiana Missoni mereció la pena entrar. Si queréis verlo os tendréis que dar prisa porque sólo estarán expuestos hasta el 4 de septiembre.

One of the most respected exponents of the ‘Made in Italy’ concept, the work of Ottavio and Rosita Missoni is deeply rooted in modern art making the Missoni brand distinctive in the world of international fashion.
MISSONI ART COLOUR showcases over 60 years of fashion alongside paintings by leading 20th century European artists, and previously unseen textile studies, paintings and Arazzi by Ottavio Missoni. The personal artwork of Missoni is mixed with modernist masterpieces, including the work of Sonia Delaunay, Lucio Fontana and Gino Severini, that have influenced Ottavio and Rosita in the development of their signature graphic style. These works are drawn from the MA*GA Art Museum, Gallarate and from private collections in Italy, and the majority have never been exhibited in the UK. The selection of fashion looks, designed by Angela Missoni since 1997, is drawn from the company’s archive, starting in 1953 to the present day.
Desde hace unos años, Bermondsey Street se ha convertido en una referencia para foodies con una oferta más que interesante para todos los bolsillos (teniendo en cuenta que estamos en Londres, eso sí). Hay mucho donde elegir y aunque no sea barato al menos estaréis en los lugares donde acuden los ingleses a comer o a cenar ( os encontrareis turistas pero no estará lleno hasta la bandera de japoneses como en los restaurantes del Soho o Chelsea).
Ah, no se os ocurra dejar el barrio sin tomaros una cerveza en en estupendo Woolpack, toda una institución en la zona. Un pub inglés de los de toda la vida con un estupendo jardín al que hay que ir pronto para encontrar mesa. Un ambiente estupendo.
Beloved Bermondsey, The Culture Trip‘s hometown, offers a plethora of culinary treats. Bermondsey first gained its reputation as the ‘Larder of London’ because of the many food industry factories there, but now the Larder of London delivers on another level. Travel the world via Spanish tapas, Malaysian curries, French stews and American burgers — we’ve got it all.
There must be very few streets in London that offer the kind of selection of bars and restaurants boasted by Bermondsey Street. You want morning coffee and a place to show off your mac? You got it – Bermondsey Street Coffee. You want a ‘real’ English pub? Easy – The Woolpack, at the centre of Bermondsey Street serves up decent pub grub and has a great pub garden for those balmy summer evenings. If you fancy a more upmarket, less pubby pub, The Garrison, opposite, quenches the thirst and amuses the bouches of many a London hipster every night of the week.
Special mention, however must go to two of my favourite restaurants on the street The Village East and the other of my favourite offerings on Bermondsey Street is the relatively new Zucca. You will love them.
Bueno, espero os haya gustado mi pequeño-gran paseo por Bermondsey Street. Sin duda fue muy gratificante encontrar este barrio tan tranquilo y acogedor a tan sólo 15 minutos del bullicioso centro de Londres. Pero lo que más me gustó fue el comprobar que es posible rehabilitar zonas antaño industriales sin perder un ápice de identidad e incluso aparecer en las más altas cotas de vanguardia. Ojo a este barrio porque, sin duda, dará mucho de que hablar en los próximos años.
