Incontables habrán sido las veces que habré pasado justo delante de este edificio sin saber las maravillas que escondía dentro. Se trata de la Casa Comercial Palazuelo a tan sólo unos metros de la concurrida Puerta del Sol de Madrid.
Situada en la Calle Mayor 4 este es uno de los más soberbios secretos de esta ciudad, una joya modernista que fue construida en el año 1919 bebiendo los aires de la Escuela de Chicago. Su responsable es Antonio Palacios, arquitecto de otros edificios tan emblematicos de la capital española como el Palacio de Cibeles o el Circulo de Bellas Artes.
Por fuera, el edificio no llama mucho la atención pero nada más entrar te das cuenta de que estás ante una joya arquitectónica que permanece escondida al gran público como si quisiera que nadie alterase su belleza.
¿Dónde está? Justo al lado de La Mallorquina, una de las pasteleriías más emblemáticas de Madrid.
I will have passed by this building countless times without knowing the wonders it holds inside. This is Casa Comercial Palazuelo just a few feet from the crowded Puerta del Sol in Madrid.
Located on Calle Mayor 4 this is one of the most wonderful secrets of this city, a modernist jewel that was built in 1919 taking the airs of the School of Chicago. Antonio Palacios, the architect of other buildings as emblematic of the Spanish capital as the Palacio de Cibeles or the Circulo de Bellas Artes, is behind it.
The building does not attract much attention on the outside but as soon as you get inside you realize that you are in front of an architectural jewel that remains hidden from the public as if it wanted nobody to alter its beauty.
Where is it? Right next to La Mallorquina, one of the most emblematic bakeries in Madrid.

Las plantas se distribuyen en torno a un patio central en forma de V, circundado por un corredor en torno al hueco central al que se abren los distintos locales y oficinas. Todo ello recibe iluminación cenital a través de una espléndida vidriera que aún se conserva.
La fachada intenta reflejar la función del edificio, aunque mantiene un cierto clasicismo utilizando columnas pareadas de orden gigante, que combina con el uso de nuevos materiales, como hierro y vidrio, en los miradores encastrados entre ellas.
¿Did you like it? This is one of the first commercial and office buildings in Madrid to be influenced by American architecture.
The floors are arranged around a central V-shaped courtyard, surrounded by a corridor around the central opening to which the various shops and offices open. All of this is illuminated from above by a splendid stained-glass window, which is still preserved.
The façade attempts to reflect the function of the building, although it maintains a certain classicism by using giant paired columns, which it combines with the use of new materials, such as iron and glass, in the bay windows set between them.
