“Este proyecto es una prolongación de mi propia vida”. Así describe Pachi Santiago su obra, asturiano nacido en Oviedo y artista reconocido desde los 15 años, cuando empezó a realizar fotografías con una cámara analógica. Vestía a sus primos, y maquillaba a su prima siempre con un cierto surrealismo, para después fotografiarlos. Desde ese momento la fotografía de Pachi se convertía en material ensoñado y creativo, y fue así como se daba cuenta que podía manipular la imagen a través de algo que no fuera el papel o el dibujo, otra de sus pasiones.
El trabajo empezó en el 2011, pero sus raíces se hunden en la infancia de Santiago, un niño con un lado femenino que le atormentaba, así que empezó a expresarse a través de los dibujos creando personajes imaginarios, entre ellos un gato que acabó convirtiéndose en una mujer. Se llamó Sonÿ hasta que el artista se topó con la modelo alemana en la televisión, cuando Schiffer era la cara de una marca de cremas y de otra de refrescos.
Y ahí empezó todo. En Copying Claudia nada es lo que parece. A primera vista puede parecer un ejercicio de admiración, humor, transformismo y ego, o el homenaje a una modelo famosa. Pero Claudia es sólo el vehículo que conduce al autor hacia su catarsis personal y lo que le marcó como diferente, generando así su autorretrato. “Así nació mi alter ego al que llamo irónicamente Yo, Claudio. Este personaje es una mezcla entre Claudia y yo y quizá la versión más extrema de mí mismo”, concluye el artista.

"This project is an extension of my own life". This is how Pachi Santiago describes his work, an Asturian born in Oviedo and a recognized artist since he was 15 years old, when he started taking photographs with an analog camera. He dressed his cousins, and made up his female cousin, always with a certain surrealism, and then photographed them. From that moment on, Pachi's photography became dreamy and creative material, and that's how he realized that he could manipulate the image through something other than paper or drawing, another of his passions.
The work began in 2011, but its roots go back to Santiago's childhood, a boy with a feminine side that tormented him, so he began to express himself through drawings by creating imaginary characters, among them a cat that ended up becoming a woman. It was called Sonÿ until the artist came across the German model on television, when Schiffer was the face of a brand of creams and another of soft drinks.
And that's where it all began. In Copying Claudia nothing is what it seems. At first glance it may seem to be an exercise in admiration, humor, transformism and ego, or a tribute to a famous model. But Claudia is only the vehicle that leads the author to his personal catharsis and what marked him as different, thus generating his self-portrait. "Thus was born my alter ego that I call ironically I, Claudio. This character is a mix between Claudia and me and perhaps the most extreme version of myself," concludes the artist.

Santiago opta en todas sus fotos por posar tal cual lo hizo la modelo para los mejores fotógrafos y retrarse. La luz y el posado son los mismos, pero no hay un trabajo de estilismo detrás, el artista usa su propia ropa porque para él lo más importante no es el parecido.
Desde lo cercano, con medios propios, y sin presupuesto, se crea este proyecto que utiliza técnicas como el collage los recortes de imágenes con poca calidad que recuerdan a los primeros años del artista. Las fotografías resultan ser fotocopias con textura, con ruido, o rotas, combinadas con otras con buena resolución, todo con un regusto kitsch, que determinan una obra cuyo trasfondo es el autodescubrimiento, la identidad y el propio reconocimiento de lo que realmente somos.
Santiago decides in all his photos to pose as the model did for the best photographers and to portray himself. The light and the posing are the same, but there is no styling work behind, the artist uses his own clothes because for him the most important thing is not the resemblance.
From the close, with his own means, and with no budget, this project is created using techniques such as collage and cuttings of images with poor quality reminiscent of the early years of the artist. The photographs turn out to be photocopies with texture, with noise, or broken, combined with others with good resolution, all with a kitsch aftertaste, which determine a work whose background is self-discovery, identity and the recognition of what we really are.
¿Y qué opina de todo esto la modelo? Pues parece encantada. Así se lo hizo llegar al artista a través de su representante y en persona, a través de las redes sociales. Previamente, Santiago envió el proyecto al entorno de Schiffer, que es coleccionista de arte contemporáneo, cuando considero que estaba suficientemente maduro y trabajado. Admite que le hace ilusión que la modelo se haya convertido en seguidora suya, pero puntualiza: "No necesito su aprobación. Soy fan suyo como pieza de arte, pero no tengo el lado friki de que mi vida dependa de su actitud".
No os perdais la exposición. Es sencillamente delirante y maravillosa, al mismo tiempo. Estará hasta finales de julio en la Casa de Vacas del Parque del Retiro de Madrid.
So what does the model think about all this? Well, she seems delighted. She told the artist so through her representative and in person, through social networks. Previously, Santiago sent the project to Schiffer's entourage, who is a collector of contemporary art, when he considered that it was sufficiently mature and worked on. He admits that he is thrilled that the model has become his follower, but points out: "I don't need her approval. I'm a fan of hers as a piece of art, but I don't have the geeky side that my life depends on her attitude".
