Amberes es uno de los templos de la moda y el diseño que tienes que conocer y una de mis favoritas. Esta ciudad se ha convertido en los últimos años en un auténtico laboratorio de tendencias capaz de hacerle sombra a pasarelas tan importantes como Londres, París o Milano. Que la moda es importante en esta ciudad te darás cuenta nada más pisarla; en unas pocas calles están todas ( literalmente todas) las casas de diseño internacionales con sus últimas colecciones completas. A eso le unes una Escuela de Diseño en la que se ha formado la nueva generación de diseñadores como Veronique Branquinho, Raf Simons, Kris Van Assche y Bruno Pieters y tenemos el coctel perfecto. ¿ Su secreto? No considerar la moda como un arte, sino como una profesión que se tiene que practicar de forma artística.
Rubens, Diamonds, Fashion! Antwerp, that little city in the North of Belgium, has a lot going for it. Today, we leave the paintings and the fancy rocks to the side, and focus on the third standout quality its known for: The art of fashion!
A lot of Antwerp’s reputation as a fashion mega city hails from the famous Antwerp Six, a group of six designers that all met during their studies at the famous Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Among them are some famous names. Dries van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck and Marina Yee turned the fashion world around with their avant-garde approach to making clothes, and their influence is still seen everywhere in the city. Include another maverick with the name of Martin Margiela into the mix, and you understand why fashion fans from all over the world come here not only for the sample sales.
A muchos le parece la moda flamenca demasiado técnica y seria. Y eso es, al menos para mí, una visión demasiado superficial de esta industria. Los diseñadores flamencos son pioneros en trabajar con nuevos materiales más fáciles a la hora de llevarlos día a día sin renunciar a un producto final perfecto, liso, bien cosido y , sobre todo, funcional. Todo es tan bonito que vuestra tarjeta de crédito puede echar humo en un par de horas.
La revolución de la moda de Amberes tuvo lugar a finales de los 80 y desde entonces los nombres de Dries van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk van Saene, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter van Beirendonck y Marina Yee forman parte del exclusivo club de la vanguardia del diseño. Su éxito fue inmediato y de repente este rincón de Flandes se convirtió en un destino preferente de peregrinaje y observación para los especialistas y compradores de moda empeñados en conseguir las creaciones más transgresoras de Europa.
It’s easy to get around in Antwerp, the city is small enough to be explored by foot. If that’s not your cup of tea, rent yourself a bike at one of the many bike stations that are scattered around town. You just sign up on Velo Antwerpen and buy yourself a daily (if you’re staying longer: weekly) pass, and off you go.
No matter if you’re on foot or two wheels, I am heading to the shopping paradise around Schuttershofstraat next, so that’s where you’re going, too. Antwerp is a shopping Mecca. Even though the city is fairly small, you will find a selection of fashion and design brands here that rivals major European cities. Blame it on the vivid fashion scene, but your credit card can easily go into overdrive within just a short hours. But even if you’re low on cash, a little window shopping never hurts. And you might as well get some inspiration now, maybe it helps you on your hunt for a coveted vintage item later in the day.
Si algo tiene la creatividad es que es contagiosa, por lo que en Amberes verás lo último en decoración, arquitectura, joyas, restauración, maestros reposteros...un crisol de tendencias y movimientos culturales. Todo lo que hay que ver y disfrutar concentrado en una ciudad que sigue siendo pequeña, manejable, cosmopolita pero sin el ruido que se percibe en otras mecas de la moda como Londres, París o Nueva York. Amberes tiene las ventajas de una gran ciudad pero el espíritu de una pequeña, “un pueblo” que ha sabido reinventarse sin perder su esencia, según la definen cariñosamente los locales. Inquieta y siempre inspiradora.
ANTWERP is small and fairly easy to navigate, so directions to newcomers are given in relation to the city’s center — an intimate mix of well-maintained medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Its two mainstays are the Grote Markt, an expansive historic town square lined with elaborate, perfectly maintained 16th- and 17th-century guild houses, and the Groenplaats, a tree- and cafe-lined square right off the Gothic Antwerp Cathedral.Beginning in the late ’80s cars were banned on many of the streets in the historic center, so it is a marvelous place to spend an afternoon and be reminded of why the 16th-century Italian merchant and historian Florentijn Lodovico Guicciardini described Antwerp as “the loveliest city in the world.”
A diferencia de otras ciudades de moda, la gente no se "arregla" para salir. Los amberinos presumen de un sobrio e impecable estilo, que refleja más seguridad que excentricidad. Al menos eso es lo que me dicen en las tiendas ,que no tiene sentido tratar de destacar sino, más bien, encajar entre la multitud. “Estar en Amberes es como estar en casa de un miembro muy querido de la familia, donde sólo se puede ser uno mismo”, me dice un estilista. “No hay presión para ser alguien”. No sé..¿será verdad eso?
A mi me parece que la gente de Amberes es modesta por naturaleza. Esta no es una ciudad de rascacielos que está siempre en movimiento. Este es un lugar tranquilo. Aquí hay espacio para crecer y desarrollarse, dos cosas muy necesarias para fomentar la creatividad.
Many stylist I spoke with said that Antwerp’s attitude to fashion is serious without being uptight. The people here just really love fashion and experience it as an extension of their personality. They are often told that they are all cocky – and it’s true: they are extremely proud of our fashion scene and they are not afraid to flaunt their sense of style.
Some of the outfits you see in Antwerp may look thrown together, but chances are there are some serious style sums behind them. They explains that “Antwerp is blessed with a wonderful Fashion Academy, which is the place where many famous designers developed their skills, going from Martin Margiela to Haider Ackermann.
The impact of the Antwerp Six on both the city and the wider world of fashion has certainly been immense.
En fin, no tenéis más excusas para no venir a Amberes. En un mundo globalizado y estandarizado da gusto encontrar ciudades donde ir de compras se convierte en una experiencia única e irrepetible. Aquí Mario Testino se pone las botas usando sus calles como estudio y su escuela de diseño es la mayor cantera de talentos del mundo. Y todo sin artificios, sin neones resplandecientes ni rebajas chillonas. Solo con escaparates que, precios al margen, son puro arte. Como Amberes no hay dos.
Antwerp is quite simply one of the world’s great cities. You have no more excuses to delete your visit. It has terrific inspiring architecture, it’s the diamond retail capital of the world and it has a fascinating port area with a lively nightlife and music scene. Some of the best bars and restaurants I have ever been to are in Antwerp, including one that sells 300 different bottled beers, all Belgian (see point 2). The dramatic cathedral even has a bar attached to the outside wall – an excellent idea. There are not two like Antwerp.
