Aprincipios de año más o menos un domingo por la mañana me fui yo solo con mi cámara a conocer el parque de El Capricho. Era pleno invierno, hacía frío, estaba todo un poco seco y, la verdad, no lo supe apreciar bien. Pero cómo cambian las cosas de verlas solo o acompañado y por supuesto en primavera cuando todo está despertando. Pues allí que me fui con mi gran amiga Coriandro ( ya os he hablado de ella alguna vez en el blog) a darle una segunda oportunidad a este parque. Y vaya cómo cambia la perspectiva. De repente lo ví todo claro. Me di cuenta porqué era "el capricho" de los Condes de Osuna, ví toques románticos por todos lados, sentí el amor por lo bello de sus antiguos propietarios. El parque es majestuoso sin llegar a ser ostentoso; es, en definitiva, un rincón de Madrid que debéis conocer.
Earlier this year on Sunday morning I went with my camera just to know El Capricho Park. It was winter, it was cold , it was all a bit dry and, frankly , I couldn't take the best of it . But how things can change when you go to any place by yourself or accompanied by a friend and of course in the spring when everything is waking up. Well, I went there with my great friend Coriander ( I already have talked about her to you guys in my blog) to give a second chance to this park. And guys, how things can change . Suddenly I saw everything clearly. I realized why it was " the whim " of the Counts of Osuna , I saw romantic touches everywhere , I felt the love for the beauty of its former owners. It is majestic without being ostentatious, it is , ultimately, a corner of Madrid that you should know .
El Capricho es uno de los espacios verdes que conforman el patrimonio artístico-natural de Madrid. Situado en Alameda de Osuna, es uno de los parques más bellos y, paradójicamente, de los más desconocidos. Creado en 1784 por los Duques de Osuna y especialmente por la duquesa, doña María Josefa de la Soledad Alonso Pimentel.
Protectora de artistas, toreros e intelectuales, la duquesa creó un auténtico paraíso natural que frecuentaron las personalidades más ilustres de la época y en el que trabajaron los artistas, jardineros y escenográfos con más prestigio.
Después de la muerte de la duquesa comenzó su declive, que fue imparable hasta que en 1974 el Ayuntamiento de Madrid compró el parque y comenzó su recuperación, que finalizó en 1999. El parque alberga una importante riqueza botánica, escultórica y artística. Contiene templetes, ermitas, fuentes, plazoletas y el palacio de los duques.
The "Parque El Capricho" or Caprice Park (literally, a whim) is still quite unknown even to Madrid's inhabitants. Maybe because it is not in the center of the city and it only opens on weekends. It is located at the Alameda de Osuna.
The 14-hectare garden, located in the area of Barajas district, dates back to 1784 when the Duke of Osuna, from one of the most illustrious and powerful of the city's families, acquired the land for the specific purpose of giving expression to the family's visionary and artistic values as well as to give the family a place to escape city life. During the Civil War a change came about, since what was once considered a place for leisure and strolling, became the Staff Headquarters of the Central Army. To this day, the garden shows the structural accommodations for a line of defence bunkers. At the end of the war, the property passed through a number of different hands, until it was bought by the Town Hall in 1974, followed by renovation works carried out several years later. After several periods of inactivity, this work as finally taken up again in 1999, and went on to win a Europa Nostra award in 2001.
El jardín ofrece tres estilos diferentes: el parterre o jardín francés, el paisaje inglés y el giardino italiano. Delante de la fachada oeste del palacio se extiende el parterre, con sus setos recortados como si de un bordado sobre la tierra se tratase.
En la parte baja se sitúa el italiano, el espacio más antiguo de la finca, que mezcla los setos con árboles en los que tomar el sol en invierno o resguardarse a la sombra del sol veraniego. Cerca de éste, el laberinto, concebido para el juego amoroso y los escondites, está hecho con laurel y respeta los planos del que se plantó en vida de la duquesa. Por último, el resto del parque está concebido como un típico jardín paisajista inglés, evocando la naturaleza en su estado puro, que invita al paseo y a detenerse en los rincones más escondidos.
On the way to the estate, one passes a circular plaza which used to be the site of a bull-fighting ring and which later became the Paseo de los Duelistas, with two sculptures representing the distance separating two people about to engage in a duel unto death. A little further is the Plaza de los Emperadores, showing the busts of two Roman emperors along with the Exedra, which is a semi circular building in the classical style, and from which one then proceeds into the Palace's front gardens. There is a labyrinth which is expressly designed for playful hiding or amorous frolicking, is a laurel grove set as per the original wishes of the Duchess herself. The rest of the park gardens is a typical English landscaped garden, echoing the natural forms of nature, most inviting for a stroll and finding a quiet corner. There are many love trees, elms, almond trees, Holm oaks and lilac bushes, which contribute their colours in springtime.
El agua es un elemento presente a lo largo de todo el paseo. El parque posee una ría navegable con un pequeño embarcadero, denominado Casa de Cañas. Decorado con espejos y un gran fresco en su interior.Durante la invasión francesa, el recinto es ocupado por el general francés Agustín Belliard, que utilizó las instalaciones para sus tropas. Tras la retirada del ejército francés, el lugar regresó a manos de la Duquesa, quien llevó a cabo una reforma del mismo.En 1882 fue subastada y adquirida por la familia Bauer. Durante la República fue declarado Jardín Histórico, aunque sin muchas consecuencias y durante la guerra civil el palacio estuvo ocupado por el general Miaja como Cuartel General del Ejército republicano al lado del palacio se encuentra la denominada Posición Jaca, aparte de un búnker y los restos de varios nidos de ametralladoras junto al castillo.
As for the Palace itself, only the walls are left from the original building, rising three floors and finished off at each corner with towers. The inside has been remodelled, and houses the offices for the park services. There is a grand ballroom, dining salons, a 6,000 volume library, as well as the alcoves and chambers of the family members. Not far from the palace is the Temple of Bacchus, which is a classical style garden structure with an oval floor base, surrounded by twelve Ionic columns and set on a rise, making it a romantic view from other parts of the garden. Water is present throughout the walk. A sinuous stream goes makes its way across the property, deep enough for row boats and in fact, uniting the games area and the lake with the Dance Casino, which can be reached by a small wharf called the Casa de Cañas.
Como ya os habréis dado cuenta no estamos ante el típico parque urbano, es más bien un jardín privado abierto al público. Está prohibido hacer picnic, no hay bares ni restaurantes ni tampoco puedes entrar con comida, alcohol o refrescos. La entrada está restringida a 1000 visitantes y sólo abren los fines de semana. Con todo merece la pena ir a visitarlo. La experiencia es maravillosa.
El Capricho recuerda a los jardines ingleses o franceses de época con bellos edificios que hacen que viajemos en el tiempo. Creo que me gusta porque es completamente diferente de otros parques en Madrid. Es difícil verlo lleno y siempre está impoluto. Os lo recomiendo en primavera cuando parece que la naturaleza empieza de cero.
This is not your typical urban park, it’s best to think of it as a private garden. You cannot have a picnic at Capricho park and there are no restaurants or cafeterias inside to sit properly and have a snack. Food, drinks, pets and even bikes or balls are not allowed, there are no playgrounds of any kind and visiting hours are limited to weekends and holidays.But trust me when I say that a visit is totally worth your time.
Capricho is the typical european romantic park, with beautiful buildings that will make you feel like you are traveling back in time.
The thing I like the most about it is that it is totally different from every park in Madrid, because the bucolic feeling to it is very unique and special. I have never seen it crowded, and it is always perfectly clean and neat, you can tell lots of gardeners take good care of it. Do not miss the love trees and the lilacs in full bloom, during springtime, are my absolute favorites.
