Que un artista te abra las puertas de su estudio es cómo indagar en lo más profundo de su ser. Por eso le doy las gracias a Charles Villeneuve al dejarme entrar en su taller lleno de pinceles, cuadros, colores, bocetos, ideas y luz, mucha luz.
Y es que estamos ante uno de los artistas que ha dado a la pintura en acuarela otra dimensión; sus obras son realistas, casi perfectas, con un punto misterioso que te atrapa y no te suelta con facilidad. Se nota sus años en el mundo de la arquitectura en esa “precisión milimétrica” con la que refleja cada detalle de los edificios, los puentes, las calles, algo tan real que a veces cuesta distinguirlo del original.
Le pillé en su estudio, con un pie en Madrid y otro en Paris donde va a exponer en unos días en la galería Ariel-Jakob una amplia retrospectiva de trabajo.
If an artist opens you the doors of his workshop you´ll be getting into the deepest part of his being. That's why I thank Charles Villeneuve for letting me see into his studio full of brushes, paintings, colors, sketches, ideas and light, lots of light.
I really believe I an in front of one of the artists who has given watercolor painting another dimension; his works are realistic, almost perfect, with a mysterious point that catches you and does not let you go easily. His architecture background can be seen in his painting on that "millimeter precision" which he reflects every detail of the buildings, the bridges, the streets, something so real that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish it from the original.
I caught him in his studio, with one foot in Madrid and the other one in Paris where he is going to exhibit in a few days at Ariel-Jakob gallery a wide retrospective of his work.
La temática de las acuarelas de Charles Villeneuve es amplia y variada. Hay paisajes, retratos, moda...pero lo que más llama la atención es su particular vision de las ciudades. Son urbes silenciosas, intrigantes, pero al mismo tiempo rebosantes de energía y de vida. Todas ellas están bañadas por una luz especial que tiende a grisácea y que dan como resultado unas acuarelas ensoñadoras, poéticas, casi mágicas.
Viajero y muy curioso, siempre lleva consigo sus cuadernos y sus lápices para tomar apuntes de las ciudades que visita, no quiere que se le escape nada. Luego, a partir de esos apuntes, sus acuarelas van tomando forma para mostrar al público no solo los monumentos, los rincones o las situaciones que han atraído su mirada, sino también la emoción que le embargó al sentirse atrapado por esos lugares.
The theme of Charles Villeneuve's watercolors is wide and varied. There are landscapes, portraits, fashion ... but what is most striking is his particular vision of cities. They are silent, intriguing cities, but at the same time brimming with energy and life. All of them are bathed in a special light that tends to grayish that are proven to be dreamy, poetic, almost magical watercolors.
Traveler and very curious, he always takes his notebooks and pencils with him to take notes of the cities he visits, he does not want to miss anything. Then, from those notes, his watercolors are taking shape to show the public not only the monuments, corners or situations that have attracted his eyes, but also the emotion that he felt when he felt trapped by those places.
Villeneuve decidió en 2009 dejar su profesión de arquitecto y dedicarse a tiempo completo a la acuarela, su gran pasión. Y a pesar de que no siempre las cosas le han ido como él quería nunca ha tirado la toalla y ahora, por fin, vive de su profesión.
Se confiesa muy exigente y perfeccionista consigo mismo. No le importa tirar a la basura bocetos y repetirlos cientos de veces hasta que la obra final quede como él quiere.
Gran parte de su obra ha viajado estos días a Paris para la exposición pero se puede apreciar en su estudio que lo que le inspira realmente es lo cotidiano, lo anodino, la arquitectura, las ciudades, su época, la gente; en definitiva cualquier cosa que sea capaz de atraerle.
Villeneuve decided in 2009 to quit his job as a arquitec and dedicated full time to his passion, the watercolor. And even though thing didn’t work out as expected he never quit his dreams and now, finally, he is making a living of his work
He defines himself very demanding about his job and that he throws away a lot of what he does for not reaching that high level that he demands of himself.
Although much of his work has traveled to Paris for the exhibition I can see in his study that what really inspires him is the everyday life, the anodyne, the architectures, the cities, his period, the people. In short, anything that is capable of attracting him.
Hablar con Charles Villeneuve es descubrir que el artista, además de nacer con ese “algo" especial, se tiene que ir puliendo poco a poco para tener personalidad y sello propio. Él dice que siempre le preguntan cuánto tarda en pintar sus acuarelas y siempre responde lo mismo, “30 años y dos semanas”; es decir prácticamente toda su vida.
Por eso reivindica con fuerza el “saber hacer” e insiste una y mil veces que la vida es como un maratón que hay que correrlo poco a poco, no un sprint en el que te cansas en un momento.
Le pregunto por su secreto para tener sello propio y, con rotundidad, me responde que estar en paz con uno mismo, tener valores, ser feliz con lo que haces y trabajo, mucho trabajo.

Talking to Charles Villeneuve I reach the conclusion that an artist, apart from being born with that special "thing", has to be polished gently in order to have his own personality and stamp. He says that he is always asked for how long it takes to paint his watercolors and he always said the same thing, "30 years and two weeks", that is, practically all of his life.
Thats why he claims for the "know-how" and insists a thousand times that life is like a marathon that has to be run slowly, not like a sprint when you get tired in a moment.
I ask him for his secret to have his own stamp and, with absoluteness, he responds that being at peace with oneself, having values, being happy with what you do and work, a lot of work.
