Es la Isla de Pascua; un remoto lugar de difícil acceso, en mitad del Océano Pacifico y a más de 5000 kilómetros de distancia de cualquier otro lugar del planeta. Ha sido, sin duda, mi gran regalo de Reyes, la guinda del pastel de mi viaje a Chile y uno de los sitios más mágicos que he visitado en mi vida.
Nada más pisar la diminuta isla sientes que estás en un sitio diferente, donde el tiempo parece tener otra dimensión y todo tiene otro sentido. Creo que es la sensación de lejanía y de distancia la que te hace pensar así y por supuesto, los Moais, las enigmáticas estatuas dispersadas por toda la isla que parecen esconder un mensaje que, hasta la fecha, nadie ha logrado descifrar.
La isla permanece ahí; quieta, silenciosa, inalterable. No hay grandes cadenas hoteleras, ni MacDonald’s, ni Starbucks, ni turismo masivo, sólo pequeños establecimientos locales y un solo avión diario la conecta con Santiago.. Así es la Isla de Pascua...donde acaba el mundo ( o empieza, según se mire).
It is Easter Island; a remote place of difficult access in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and more than 5000 kilometres from any other place on the planet. My great Christmas gift was, without a doubt, the icing on the cake of my trip to Chile and one of the most magical places I've ever been in my life.
Just stepping on the tiny island you feel like you are in a different site, where time seems to have another dimension and everything has another meaning. I think that it is the feeling of remoteness and distance that makes you think as well of course, the MOAI, the enigmatic statues scattered throughout the island which seem to hide a message that, to date, no one has managed to decipher.
The island remains there; still, silent, immutable. There are no big hotel chains, MacDonald's or Starbucks, or mass tourism, only small local establishments and a single daily plane connects it with Santiago... So it is Easter Island... where the world ends (or begins, depending how you look).
No sé porqué en ninguna guía que leí antes de ir a la isla decía algo evidente que se nota nada más pisarla: estás en la Polinesia; es decir clima tropical, frutas y flores exóticas, humedad altísima y costumbres más propias de Tahití que del continente americano (de hecho ellos, los RapaNui, son originarios de Asia no de América).
Una vez os hayais acostumbrado al clima os aconsejo alquilar un coche para recorrer la isla por vosotros mismos y ver todo lo que os ofrece. Los Moias son su mayor atracción, pero aparecerán sorpresas como cráteres de volcanes que parecen lagunas, playas paradisiacas de arena finísima o paisajes verdes que pareciera estar en Irlanda.
I don't know why in any guide I read before going to the island say something obvious that it feels stepping on: It's a Polynesian island; i.e. tropical climate, exotic fruits and flowers, high humidity and customs more own of Tahiti that the continent American (indeed they, the RapaNui, are originating from Asia not America).
Once you've accustomed to the climate I advise you to rent a car to explore the island by yourself and see what it offers you. The MOAI are its main attraction, but there will appear surprises such as craters of volcanoes that seem lagoons, beaches of fine sand or green landscapes that seems to be in Ireland.
Como veis Isla de Pascua tiene muchímos atractivos y podréis hacer muchas cosas como bucear, surfear, comer excelente pescado e incluso ir de marcha (aunque no hay mucha oferta de locales) ...pero ya que estáis en un sitio tan mágico y tan aislado del resto del mundo yo os recomendaría hacer lo que hacen los locales: tomarse toda con mucha calma, sentarse a mirar el Pacífico, escuchar tu interior y pensar, o mejor dicho, no pensar. Es entonces cuando, de repente, sentirás que todo encaja, tiene sentido y entenderás el porqué las estatuas han permanecido ahí durante tantos siglos quietas e inalterables: han dominado al tiempo.
As you can see Easter Island has many attractive things and you can do many activities as scuba diving, surfing, eating excellent fish and even going out (although there are not many bars around) but since you are in a place so magical and so isolated from the rest of the world I would recommend you to do what the locals do: take it all very calmly and watch the Pacific Ocean, listening to your interior and think, or rather, not to think. Is then when, suddenly, you will feel that everything fits, makes sense and you will understand why the statues have remained there for so many centuries quiescent and unchangeable: they have conquered the time.
