Escocia es famosa por muchas cosas: whisky, gaitas, "faldas escocesas", la serie de TV Outlander y, por supuesto, ¡el monstruo del lago Ness! Un viaje a Escocia no estaría completo sin experimentar estas cosas, así que hasta allí me fui para intentar entender una de las leyendas más misteriosas y populares de todos los tiempos.
Las aguas del lago son frías, oscuras, muy quietas y algo tenebrosas. El paisaje que lo rodea es montañoso y de difícil acceso y, contra todo pronóstico, toda la zona esta mucho más deshabitada de lo que yo me pensaba. Supongo que todo eso hace del lago Ness un sitio propenso a mitos y leyendas que perduran en el tiempo y que, verdaderas o no, nos gusta alimentarlas.
Hay pocos misterios tan perdurables en la historia como el del monstruo del lago Ness, un misterio que se remonta al siglo VI llegandose a publicar incluso fotografías donde, supuestamente, podía apreciarse a esta bestia mitológica.
Y aunque son numerosos los científicos y aficionados que han tratado de ver a Nessie a lo largo de varias décadas, a día de hoy no existen pruebas fehacientes de su existencia. Son muchos quienes afirman haberlo visto, pero la explicación más lógica es que se tratase de alguno de los seres vivos que habitan el lago o de una simple ilusión óptica.
Todo esto no quita que el lugar sean tan precioso como mágico, tan cautivador como nostálgico...en definitiva un rincón único en la tierra.
Scotland is famous for many things: whisky, bagpipes, kilts, haggis and, of course, the Loch Ness Monster! A trip to Scotland would not be complete without experiencing these things, so off I went to try to understand one of the most mysterious and popular legends of all time.
The waters of the loch are cold, dark, very still and somewhat murky. The surrounding landscape is mountainous and difficult to access and, against all odds, the whole area is much more uninhabited than I thought. I guess all that makes Loch Ness a place prone to myths and legends that endure over time and that, true or not, we like to feed them.
There are few mysteries as enduring in history as that of the Loch Ness Monster, a mystery that dates back to the 6th century and even photographs were published where, supposedly, this mythological beast could be seen.
And although many scientists and amateurs have tried to see Nessie over several decades, to date there is no reliable evidence of its existence. There are many who claim to have seen him, but the most logical explanation is that it was one of the living beings that inhabit the lake or a simple optical illusion.
All this does not detract from the fact that the place is as beautiful as it is magical, as captivating as it is nostalgic...in short, a unique corner of the earth.
El lago Ness es una masa de agua extraordinaria. Es la mayor masa de agua por volumen de las Islas Británicas y, sin duda, su tamaño y profundidad pueden esconder muchos misterios. El lago ha sido objeto de expediciones y estudios en casi todas las décadas desde los años 30, y muchos científicos han llegado a la conclusión de que el monstruo del lago Ness no es más que un mito. Muchos avistamientos han sido desenmascarados como engaños y trucos publicitarios. Sin embargo, muchos cazadores de monstruos y teóricos siguen creyendo que hay algo oculto en las profundidades y no pararán hasta encontrarlo.
En cualquier caso, tanto si crees en el monstruo del lago Ness como si sólo quieres disfrutar de la belleza natural, el entorno ofrece mucho a sus visitantes. Puedes dar un paseo por el agua o visitar el castillo de Urquhart, uno de los 10 mejores castillos de Escocia. También hay pequeños pueblos encantadores con vistas al agua y la zona es un paraíso para los amantes de la naturaleza, con multitud de paseos para disfrutar y animales salvajes que avistar.
Loch Ness is an extraordinary body of water. It is the largest body of water by volume in the British Isles, and its size and depth can undoubtedly hide many a mystery! The loch has been host to expeditions and studies throughout almost every decade since the 1930s and many scientists have concluded that the Loch Ness Monster is nothing but a myth. Many sightings have been unmasked as hoaxes and publicity stunts. However, many monster hunters and theorists still believe there is something hidden in the depths and they will not stop until they find it. So, is there a monster in Loch Ness? The only way to know for certain is to visit the loch yourself!
Whether you believe in the Loch Ness Monster or you just want to enjoy some natural beauty, Loch Ness offers plenty for visitors. You can take a trip out on the water itself or you can visit Urquhart Castle – one of my choices for the 10 best castles in Scotland! There are many charming villages overlooking the water and the area is a haven for nature lovers with plenty of walks to enjoy and wildlife to spot.
El lago Ness es un lugar maravilloso para visitar, tanto si quieres cazar monstruos, te detienes a ver si atisbas a Nessie o, simplemente, quieres disfrutar de la naturaleza.
Si la suerte no te acompaña y el monstruo del lago no aparece (algo que, con toda probabilidad, será así), no te preocupes. La simple contemplación del entorno y del romántico castillo que ha sido testigo de tantas guerras y calamidades compensa con creces. Sobre todo si hay niebla y llueve y si lo que alcanza la vista parece desolador, salvaje… así es el lago Ness: un gran estanque oscuro y turbio, pero evocador, como la propia Escocia.
Loch Ness is a wonderful place to visit, whether you want to hunt monsters or just stop to see if you can glimpse Nessie or just want to enjoy nature.
If you're unlucky and the loch monster doesn't show up (which, in all likelihood, it will), don't worry. The simple contemplation of the surroundings and the romantic castle that has witnessed so many wars and calamities more than compensates. Especially if it is foggy and rainy and if what meets the eye seems desolate, wild ... so is Loch Ness: a large dark and murky pond, but evocative, like Scotland itself.
