Si tienes 30 años verás este post como algo “viejuno”, si tienes 40 seguro que te acuerdas mucho de tu hermano mayor y si estás en tus 50 la nostalgia se va a apoderar de ti cuando veas los Madelman de tu infancia convertidos ahora en pieza de museo.
Y es que aquel hombrecillo articulado, diminuto pero bien pertrechado con todo tipo de indumentarias, armas, vehículos increíbles y accesorios ha cumplido 50 años y, para conmemorar su medio siglo, el Museo Nacional de Antropología alberga hasta octubre una exposición sobre este muñeco que ofrece una mirada retrospectiva y muy nostálgica de la
España de la época.
Su lema era “Lo pueden todo”, así que allá vamos.
If you are 30 years old you will see this post as something "oldie", if you're 40 you'll sure remember your older brother and if you're in your 50's nostalgia will take over when you see the Madelman of your childhood now turned into pieces of museum.
So that little articulated man , tiny but well equipped with all kinds of clothing, weapons, incredible vehicles and accessories has turned 50 and, to commemorate its half century, the National Museum of Anthropology of Spain will host until October an exhibition on this doll that offers a very nostalgic look of the Spain of that time.
Their motto was "They can do it all", so here we go.
Para los que no tengan ni idea de quienes fueron los Madelman, decirles que eran unos muñecos articulados que con distintos trajes y complementos podían convertirse en cualquier tipo de personaje de acción (de guerreros históricos a piratas, ‘cowboys’ o indios, de exploradores árticos a montañeros, intrépidos aviadores o astronautas).
Desde 1968 a 1983, periodo en que se fabricaron, fueron el sueño de todos los niños españoles y, como decía la publicidad de la época muchos lo consideraban “mas que un amigo, un compañero.".
For those who have no idea who Madelman were, I´ll tell them that they were articulated dolls with different costumes and accessories that could become any type of action character (from historical warriors to pirates, 'cowboys' or Indians, arctic explorers mountaineers, intrepid aviators or astronauts).
From 1968 to 1983, the period in which they were made, they became the dream of all Spanish children and, as the publicity of the time said, they considered it “more than a friend, a companion".
El Madelman tenía 17 centímetros de alto, con ojos de aspecto cristalino, de raza blanca o negra, y la opción de pata de palo. La estatura fue decidida en función a la maquinaria disponible para confeccionarle la ropa. Formado por 23 piezas, todas estaban encajadas a un cuerpo. Al principio el muñeco se parecía mucho a una persona vestida con camiseta y calzoncillos y sólo se cerraba con un tornillo en la espalda. Carecía de pies y las botas se encajaban.
Los veteranos recordarán al marinero, al explorador del Ártico, al cazador africano y su ayudante negro tocado con un fez, el espeleólogo, el hombre rana, el astronauta de la película '2001', el soldado de camuflaje o el mecánico de carreras. Entre 1968 y 1983 el Madelman evolucionó. Tuvo pies, los ojos ya no eran tan sugerentes como los originales y tuvo una compañera, la Madelwoman. Míticos fueron los modelos del pirata 'Jim Black', un guerrero y una princesa india. Algunas figuras lucieron barba.
Madelman was 17 centimeters tall, with crystalline-looking eyes, white or black, and the option of a wooden leg. His height was decided on the machinery available to make the clothes. The toy was formed by 23 pieces, all were fitted to a body. At first it was similar to a person dressed in a shirt and underpants and was only closed with a screw in the back. He lacked feet and the boots fit.
Veterans will remember the sailor, the Arctic explorer, the African hunter and his black assistant with a fez, the speleologist, the frogman, the astronaut from the movie '2001', the camouflage soldier or the racing mechanic. Between 1968 and 1983 the Madelman evolved. He had feet, his eyes were not as suggestive as the originals and he had a partner, the Madelwoman. Mythical were the models of the pirate 'Jim Black', a warrior and an Indian princess. Some figures wore beards.
Tras su desaparición en 1983, los Madelman renacieron en 2002 por un breve periodo, pero ya no eran los mismos hombrecillos de los años 60 y no cosecharon el mismo éxito. Medio siglo después, los primeros Madelman son objetos de deseo. En internet se ofrecen lotes de Madelman por casi 4.000 euros, ejemplares sueltos a 1.000 si conservan su caja original o una diminuta pistola por solo dos euros.
Una tentación para nostálgicos del aquel héroe de plástico que acaban de cumplirse los 50 años de su creación y que podeis ver hasta octubre en el Museo de Antropología. No os la perdáis.
In 1983 Madelman stop manufacturing and they were reborn in 2002 for a brief period of time, but they were not the same men of the 60s and did not reap the same success. Half a century later, the first Madelman are objects of desire. On internet Madelman packages are offered for almost 4,000 euros, loose copies for 1,000 if they keep their original box, or a tiny gun for only two euros.
A temptation for nostalgic of that plastic hero who just turned 50 years old of its creation and that you can see until October at the Museum of Anthropology. Do not miss it.
