La temática la protagoniza los Himba, la última tribu nómada de Namibia, para quienes la belleza es una tradición. Echeverría lleva años retratando a este pequeño colectivo de mujeres y hombres bendecidos por una espectacular genética y que han sido masacrados durante generaciones por tribus ribales.
En la actualidad sólo quedan unos 10.000 y afortunadamente viven en paz, con el resto de las tribus y con ellos mismos. Han hecho del desierto su hogar, un santuario donde cultivar las severas normas que heredaron de sus antepasados, con los que mantienen una comunicación constante por medio de un conjunto de rituales. La herencia establece, entre otras cosas, el respeto a la jerarquía encabezada por el jefe y el derecho y deber a cultivar la belleza corporal.
A través de las 15 imágenes en blanco y negro y de medio formato que se exhiben en esta muestra, Echeverría recoge la vertiente más entrañable y delicada de los Himba. Fotos hechas con respeto y cariño y con ese toque melancólico de aquel que se despide del pasado, de la tradición y de un modo de vida.

It’s about the Himbas, the last nomadic tribe of Namibia, for whom beauty is a tradition. Echeverría has been portraying for years this small collective of women and men blessed by a spectacular genetics and who have been slaughtered for generations by ribal tribes.
Today there are only about 10,000 left and fortunately they live in peace, with the rest of the tribes and with themselves. They have made the desert a home, a sanctuary where they cultivate the strict rules they inherited from their ancestors, with whom they maintain constant communication through a set of rituals. Inheritance establishes, among other things, respect for the hierarchy headed by the chief and the right and duty to cultivate bodily beauty.
Through this 15 black-and-white and half-format images show at this exhibition, Echeverría captures the most endearing and delicate side of the Himba. Photos taken with respect and affection and with that melancholic touch of one who bids farewell to the past, tradition and a way of life.
A lo largo de sus casi 40 años de profesión, Juan Echeverría ha viajado por los cinco continentes y ha recorrido más de 80 países. Sus fotografías muestran su pasión viajera, su respeto por la naturaleza y su amor por África.
La exposición fotográfica Himba se puede visitar hasta el 8 de junio. La entrada es gratuita.
Throughout his almost 40 years of profession, Juan Echeverría has travelled to the five continents and has travelled to more than 80 countries. His photographs show his passion for travelling, his respect for nature and his love of Africa.
