Ahora que estamos en plena Semana Santa os confesaré que aunque no me considere una persona especialmente religiosa ( más bien todo lo contrario) siempre me ha gustado entrar un ratito en los templos sea de la confesión que sea y observar a la gente, sus ritos, como rezan, como se relacionan y, por supuesto, todo el arte que hay dentro.
Y os cuento todo esto porque un amigo se puso hacer running y corriendo y corriendo me dijo que se topó por casualidad con esta imponente Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa en el barrio de Hortaleza aquí en Madrid. Yo tampoco tenía ni idea de su existencia así que me fui a conocerla y por un momento dudé si estaba viendo visiones o si alguna máquina “teletransportadora” me había llevado a Moscú en un pis-pas. Allí estaba la iglesia de Santa María Magdalena, con sus 5 cúpulas de pan de oro para deslumbrar a todo el que se acerque.
Now that we are in the middle of Easter vacation, I will confess that although I do not consider myself a particularly religious person (rather the opposite) I have always liked to enter in the temples a bit of whatever confession and observe the people, their rites, how they pray, how they relate and, of course, all the art there is inside.
I am telling you all of this because a friend went out to do running and after a lot of running and he bumped with this imposing Russian Orthodox Church in the neighborhood of Hortaleza here in Madrid. I also had no idea of its existence so I went see it and for a moment I doubted if I was seeing visions or if some "teleporter" machine had taken me to Moscow in a bit. There it was the church of Santa Maria Magdalena, with its 5 cupolas of gold leaf to dazzle anyone who comes.
Nunca antes había entrado en una iglesia ortodoxa rusa y, la verdad, es diferente a las católicas pero tampoco tanto. Al principio notareis que siemprehuele muchísimo a incienso, no hay capillas ni imágenes, la misa dura 2 horas ( sí, sí, lo habéis leído bien 2 horitas) y no hay bancos para sentarse. El sacerdote mira siempre al Altar y da la espalda a los asistentes a la misa y , ya está, por lo demás todo igual.
Para que veáis que al final la diferencia entre religiones es mínima; sólo los ritos y poca cosa más. Sin duda es muchísimo más lo que les une que lo que les separa.
Never before I had entered a Russian Orthodox church and it is not very different from the Catholic ones, well just a bit. At first you will notice that there is always an abundance of incense, there are no chapels or images, the mass lasts 2 hours (yes, yes, you have read 2 hours) and there are no benches to sit. The priest always looks at the Altar and turns his back on those attending Mass, and it is otherwise the same.
So as you can see in the end the difference between religions is minimal just the rites and little more. No doubt it is much more what unites them than what separates them
En el mismo entorno de la iglesia se encuentra la Casa Rusia. El sitio es un maravilloso lugar para informarse un poco sobre su presencia en España; quiénes fueron los primeros en venir, a qué se dedican en la actualidad, su cultura, etc. Rusos, ucranianos, georgianos, moldavos, pero también españoles componen la comunidad ortodoxa rusa de Madrid, el Ayuntamiento cedió gratuitamente y por 75 años en julio de 2010 el solar en el que se levanta la basílica.
Yo no hice el tour pero todos los sábados a las 5 el párroco hace un recorrido y explica a los turistas todas las curiosidades en torno a la construcción de la iglesia y, por supuesto, a la simbología religiosa. Creo que la visita merece la pena.

In the same place where the church located is the Russian House. The site is a wonderful place to learn a little about their presence in Spain; who were the first to come, what are they engaged in today, their culture, etc. Russians, Ukrainians, Georgians, Moldovans, but also Spaniards compose the Russian Orthodox community of Madrid, the City Council ceded for free and for 75 years in July 2010 the site in which the basilica stands.
I did not do the tour but every Saturday at 5 PM the parish priest makes a tour and explains to tourists all the curiosities about the construction of the church and, of course, the religious symbolism.
